I supposed there is a chance Thunderbolt could be built into both the displayport and the USB ports. It would be in the displayport to provide it to a future Cinema display, and USB for everything else. They would probably still label the USB ports with USB to not confuse people, who will still be using those ports for some time to come.

Or... the whole thing is just fake. Or a mix of real and fake info. I do like the HD-Facetime. Maybe the iPad 2 will also have this?

I think we're forgetting about all the customization you will be able to do. The stock models usually have the lowest memory, hard drive and processor speeds.

We're also only looking at a 13 inch. The 15 inch models could be absolutely amazing.

GOod point, with the i5 already being in the lowest possible mbp, i got high hopes for decent upgrades.

I just hope the 15" comes with a good gpu

I translated from German to English the text on the label regarding "Thunderbolt" and here's the result in English "Thunderbolt port supports high-speed I / O and Mini DisplayPort devices" which means its a two in one port, hence why it looks like a DisplayPort port.

OMG it's a big day today.. starting from iPad 2 event on March 2, OS X Lion, and now this.... this Thunderbolt thing!

My take is that I won't believe it until I see it. But can someone explain this:

How did they do that?
MacRumors got their own sources within/around Apple. They've probably asked around and managed to confirm them. Nothing spectacular.

The 15 inch is the model I'm interested in. Regardless of the stock model, I need a dedicated graphics card and 8 GB of memory for work projects.

Steve Jobs: "Introducing, The iPad duo, with our newest innovation, thunder bolt"

Croud: "PEW PEW PEW.."

I have to admit Thunderbolt is pretty lame.

Some heads are going to roll when Steve goes back to work.

You could have just read the English version. :D

This is the new MBP entry level model - has to be. Compare the specs with the current entry level model - it's slightly better. I reckon the higher spec models will have an SSD option and possibly a bump in display res. They have to have if the current MacBook Airs have them... we will know later today if more images leak...

no liquid metal it seems. Still the precision aluminium unibody

I still can't believe that some users haven't caught on to the trend. Apple won't for from one particular model/design to changing every single aspect of the machine in one update.

There's no way Apple would put R&D money into going from the current model to a liquid metal, polycarbonite, Light Peak, quad core i7, hi res standard, SSD standard, thin as the macbook air, dual FW800, blu-ray toting, 3G enabled, etc. etc. Macbook Pro.

In all seriousness, you can put your money on a speed and GPU bump, and possibly ONE other minor enhancement.

Getting TB/LP and the processor upgrade is actually a big deal.

Wow this SUCKS. These specs are akin to an early 2008, middle of the line laptop for every other manufacturer (with the exception of Thunderbolt). Should be priced no higher than $499 (though I think it's safe to assume it will slide into the $999 slot).

Why does Apple hate their customers?

Whatever the trade name for Light Peak is, I would hope that Apple uses the regular trademarked name and not make one of their own.

I would hope so. I'm guessing, Intel may not own the trademark to LightPeak in Germany. Apple proabably didn't want to get into any legal mess, so it used ThunderBolt. Dunno.

if they discontinue the mac book than the "pro" label makes no sense anymore. what is it supposed to be a "pro" of otherwise ;)

Idk...I'm convinced this is either the most basic model of macbook pro you can possibly get, or it is not a MBP at all, but a normal macbook.

I'm guessing the MacBook goes away entirely. The MacBook Air is the "next generation of MacBooks," remember.

I don't understand that nobody is surprised, that if this the low end model, how is it possible that the CPU is an i5?? What does that mean for the other 13 inch MPB model? And what does this mean to the 15 and 17 inch?
And why only such a big improvement to the CPU, compared to the last revision, while the other specifications are not so fascinating?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandy_Bridge

MBP 15 and 17 will get high-end Core i5 and i7s. And by the way these are second gen Core i series.

I think it's safe to say the next iPad will have Thunderbolt. Apple might even be able to increase their Macbook pro sales riding on the sucess of the iPad.

I expected the 13" to have to deal with a 1st generation i3, so the fact that it's using Sandy Bridge is pretty nice.

What a lame name... LightPeak was much cooler. They need to get some new marketing people in there to think of these names. Like someone else brought up Mission Control and Launch Pad and now Thunderbolt? What does thunderbolt even mean?

Perhaps even more important, using a picture of a lightning bolt with an arrow on the end of it??? That symbol is almost universally recognized as "ELECTRICITY" - not an I/O port. Just take a look here: Google Images: Electricity Symbol

I know Apple has a different marking for where the magsafe connector is, but let's try to respect some universally acknowledged symbols. Apple is known for their design but that surely is a design mistake.

I can't wait to use it, but a better name and a better icon would have really helped when trying to get people to understand it.
