this implementation would simply SUCK!

It would mean that Apple won't use the standard Light/Copper-Peak Port which was supposed to be physically compatible with a USB Port! It would further mean, that other LightPeak Ports (on PCs and devices) would be different from the one on the Mac. Now why would Apple do that? It would suck for the customer!

They have these things called "adapters." Light Peak doesn't have a standard port yet, and mini-displayport is a standard port for displays. I'm guessing that there will be Light Peak ports that look like USB, and those that look like mini-displayport. Each will be compatible with all Light Peak devices.

I suspect it's Photoshopped. Why use a lightning bolt symbol? The assumption on seeing a port with this symbol would be that it's for a power connector.

Whatever the trade name for Light Peak is, I would hope that Apple uses the regular trademarked name and not make one of their own.

I would hope so. I'm guessing, Intel may not own the trademark to LightPeak in Germany. Apple proabably didn't want to get into any legal mess, so it used ThunderBolt. Dunno.

HTC seem to own the ThunderBolt trademark.

I have to admit Thunderbolt is pretty lame.

Some heads are going to roll when Steve goes back to work.

I can't wait for Steve to just retire.

Wow this SUCKS. These specs are akin to an early 2008, middle of the line laptop for every other manufacturer (with the exception of Thunderbolt). Should be priced no higher than $499 (though I think it's safe to assume it will slide into the $999 slot).

Why does Apple hate their customers?

True, but you're late to the party.

Lightpeak sounds much more appealing than "Thunderbolt".

It does, but it's almost like Sony's IEEE 1394 or iLink instead of Firewire 400.

I think it's safe to say the next iPad will have Thunderbolt. Apple might even be able to increase their Macbook pro sales riding on the sucess of the iPad.

That would make sense if that phantom port on the ipad 2 cases was similar in size to mini display port... it would suggest that iPad 2 indeed has this "Thunderbolt" *cringes* connection too

Source?

In 3Dmark06 its faster :D

Its in the same link you posted.

go to game benchmark, and press the compare button. Stop posting false information, just makes you look stupid.

And while your at it, why dont post 3d mark settings for 1956 edition. Stupid.

Since when does 3d mark represent real peformance.

I wouldn't get too fussy about the light peak port yet... that photo in the first thread is clearly photoshopped - you can see a line cutting down slightly diagonally through the left USB port from a quick and shoddy photoshop.

I'm not saying it will or won't be like that... I just think that photo is incredibly dubious and doesn't prove anything.

Okay, this is obviously true. And do you know why it's real, because it's realistic? Don't you guys ever get bored of whipping yourselves up into a frenzy of expectation (Liquid Metal! Macbook Pros that fly!) and then being disappointed?

Apple sell a lot (an awful lot) of 13" Pros with the current specs. They don't need to make a new Pro that will blow more than the bloody doors off. This is more softly, softly. There are some good things here. People have been clamouring for new processors and Light Peak forever. Celebrate, they're here!

Plus, there are going to be better models. If you want better specs, you'll be able to pay for them.

Finally, I don't think this extinguishes the possibility of a small SSD card for storage of the system files, would this show up on the specs?

Finally finally, a thunderbolt is a lightning bolt, therefore constructed of light (not sound), therefore made of the fastest stuff in existence.

if they discontinue the mac book than the "pro" label makes no sense anymore. what is it supposed to be a "pro" of otherwise ;)

The only thing that makes the laptop line pro is the price. Although that is being a little unfair as now with thunderbolt the MBP might actually have a feature for the pro market.

Also, assuming the rumors are true and they are replacing the white macbook with this metal one - wth are they thinking? Haven't they been down this road once before and realized that was a dumb move? Then they had to go and bring the white one back.

Come on Apple, not everyone wants a Macbook Pro ... or even a Macbook in a Macbook Pro body.

Not sure about our American friends here :)

But coming from the UK. Thunderbolt does sound a very tacky and cheap sounding name. The type of thing a low end cheap maker would put on something to make it sound flashy. Like flames painted down the side of a crappy car.

It's not a elegant, sophisticated name in the normal Apple clean style.

It more the like the names graphics cards are given for the young techies.

The Ultra Turbo Mega Thunderbolt 3 card

I think I had only the Awesomatrix Thunderbolt 2D. :p

It´s faster in 3dMark06. It´s all i saying. :)

5053 for intel 3000 and 4706 for nvidia 320m. I know it´s not represent real performance!

maybe im just reachinggggg..

(Thunder-)Bolt?

This seems to be confirmed, but i´m still confused about the powerbolt icon... for a display/data port nearby the power connector this is just to much "power"-related to me and maybe confusing some users in my opinion. but i may be wrong on this... anyway, the hole thunderbolt thing just reminded me on something:

(oh wait, thats NO pixar movie... strange.)

I actually don't think so given that no power adaptor made for a Mac laptop would ever fit.

True but why even use something that could be confused? Especially when Apple's business model seems to be increasingly targeting less tech-savvy users. I've seen people plug USB sticks into the ethernet port before.
