so please... someone provide a functioning definition for "soon"

Welcome.

You should know that this is just a sport for MacRumors forum posters. There is no one who has any information or idea when a product will be released. It is all wild speculation.

People go round and round, saying the same things over and over again. Every Tuesday morning there will be a wave of anticipation followed by furious anger and disappointment. You will see dozens of people claiming they are going to switch to Windows. None of these people actually do.

So, to answer your question, it could be today, tomorrow, or June.

havn't read the whole thread but it seems to me like a filter system.

Steve's original message was probably

"Not to worry the update is happening on the XX-XX-XXXX"

But his Non-Disclousure email filter knocked off everything that was releasing confidential apple information.

SO its clear we will see the update next time my calender displays all X's

:D

October 10, 2010? If we use roman numerals, that'd be all Xs.

It's simple, Mac OSX is great, but Windows 7 is not that bad when tweaked, and I'm not talking about Ubuntu or Chrome OS.
So really switching "out" may be the danger for Apple if intelligent and trendsetting consumer realise that the pace of Apple innovation and release is getting slower and slower compared to the rest of the market...

Many Mac users have large software investments and aren't going anywhere.

Best summary of all of the various Arrandale threads I've seen, well done. I can barely visit these forums anymore with all of the vitriol.

He was expressing an opinion about the Apple fan base.

No he wasn't. With the moderators tolerance, once again he was making ad hominems to apple users-fans calling them cultists and zombies and trolling the forums. As an apple user I take offence, and I won' have no petty person under the anononimity and cover that the web affords come here and call me a zombie, because he happens to disagree with my buying decisions.

Like I said, this parody in the moderating here has to stop at some point.

As for the rest of the points I have mostly replied. It's not a silly argument about how many models there are because the original point was that apple doesn't have enough options, and they have ample.

Technology is reaching it's limits, you can't have "jet setting innovation" very often, that said, multi touch glass trackpads and a cutting edge construction plus industry leading battery life (which I forgot in my original post) are pretty advanced, the fact that some may have caught on in a few features (but no one in everything) doesn't say much. And of course they are not merely cosmetic.

You might find the 15" resolution paltry, but there are a lot of users such as myself who find it more than adequate, and would actually not want more ppi. It's a matter of opinion. Apple can't offer all the options. I don't see why when apple offer the highest res, much higher than hd, 27" imac, a best in class and cheapest in class machine, you must complain about the res. of 15" notebook, if you are doing work that requires such high res get the imac, or get the 17" which has very high res. Apple can't be everything to everyone.

Of couse they were playing hardball with the igpu, it's a move by intel that has the anti competitiveness authorities on the back, it's pimping a crappy gfx on systems that are 3 year old and have better igfx at the moment. Apple didn't spend all that time developing open gl to have graphics that don't support it because intel have figured out a nice sly way to sell graphics that no one would otherwise. So apple should have gone with the intel igfx and taken their machines 3 years back....

The frenzy over this 3 word cryptic email is insane. It shows how off the rocker people have become.

Imagine sending that email to any other CEO and getting that trite response. Would you be satisfied - NO. You would be ticked off.

But people on this forum are treating those 3 words like mana from heaven.

Please.

SJ didn't have the courtesy to answer the emailer's questions. He didn't take the time to say "thanks for your loyalty, thanks for being a customer, or thanks for your patience". He didn't even say "Soon" which would have given a little more insight - then "Not to worry".

The simple fact is that email provided us no more information then we had a week ago. Period.

I do a lot of video editing - primarily on a desktop. There is great software on a PC and a Mac that will do what I need to do. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

But come May 20th, I am going to be traveling all summer and will need a high end laptop. A few weeks from now, I am going to be taking a very unbiased look at what is the best machine for my trip.

I can tell you it won't be an overpriced, outdated MBP. But that is OK Steve - "Not to worry."

Right, right. Let me know when you get a personal email response from Michael Dell or Steve Ballmer about a product update. I'd like to see how that goes.

Web and video? Get an iPad!

They might want to access all the hundreds of flash websites though!

I'm happy to wait til may as I won't have the money til then. Hopefully by then they won't all have yellow screens, use 80% of the CPU to play a song in iTunes or have non clicking trackpads too! ;)

Like I said again it's not your fault, it's the moderators' faults for allowing you to come here and throw these garbage, calling the majority of the apple users here cultists and zombies.

And of course after the ad hominems you are full of arguments:
fewer models: five separate macbook models (not counting the different cpu, gpu options), next time blame porche for not flooding the market like kia.
fewer features: multi touch, unibody, led screens, glass trackpads, (all of which were first in class), a plethora of current ports, ssds across the board, and that's not counting any of the OS features which are best in class.
low rez screens: ha, sure... find a higher rez screen than the imac 27" all in one and then we can talk.
prehistoric updates: i.e. waiting for a couple of months max (and that only for this line up, because for the c2ds they were as fast or faster than competitors) for each incremental 15% added power/value intel update, so they can offer some of the best chip sets and gpu integration

You are a sad bitter little man.

I actually agree with him, he does have a point...it's unbelievable how many people in this thread are taking SJ's THREE WORD email as a positive sign...

I don't criticize Apple for it's current lineup or pricing, there's no need for me to do that. If for whatever reason their products don't fit my needs i simply don't buy them.

The line that Core iX isn't important. The existing CPUs are as fast. When Apple used the Core iX in the iMacs that whole thought process went away (for the iMac). I understand that Apple basically screwed themselves be relying on nVidia for a chipset (when pretty much everyone who followed Core iX knew that nVidia didn't have a license to make chipsets for Nehalem). It would seem like Apple would have a long enough period of time to come to grips with the performance difference in the IGP's and still be able to trumpet the advantage of the discrete part (assuming they would use ATI). When going from the iBooks to the Macbooks they didn't really dwell much on the GPU performance (from what I could remember). They could just do the same this time.

Times have changed we are heading to an integrated gpu/cpu hybrid, the gpu with such technologies as open cl plays an integral part in a portable computer. It's not their fault for sticking with nvidia, because ati doesn't have chipsets either, and intel has got the anti competitiveness authorities on their back now, that says a lot about what options they left for their partners and who is the culprit here.

Unfortunately that is correct with their business plan, which is working. They long ago gave up the fight for marketshare which would require adjusting prices and a shorter interval between releases to be more competitive.

Simply put they found it better/easier to sell 10 machines at 35% margin (or higher as line ages) then 30 machines at 15% margin (or less as some others do).

Personally I would like to see a slight adjustment and pass on price decreases as the component prices decrease or more minor updates over a lines lifespan, but again that isn't their model.

You're right, although I think there is a limit to how far you can push this strategy. People are willing to pay a premium for Apple computers, but there is a limit on how much. With the next release taking as long as it has and Apple's unwillingness to make any pricing changes, that premium has gotten pretty large. I am sure it has cost them some sales. Probably not enough to make that big of a difference to their bottom line, but if this trend continues, who knows what will happen.

Right, right. Let me know when you get a personal email response from Michael Dell or Steve Ballmer about a product update. I'd like to see how that goes.

so this is more about Steve replying to an email than it is about the contents of the said email.

now that he finally got a reply from SJ he should build a church around the machine he read it on. jeez

Everything that has been going on financially for Apple the past few quarters just shows that what most of the whiners are saying here has no basis in reality.

Apple is having record sales. Like it or not, people are buying their "outdated" products in droves. The few disgruntled children on this forum, ready to up and jump ship to Windows 7 over a slow product refresh mean nothing, in the big picture.

I got my Macbook Pro last Christmas, I know, it was somehow a Gamble to wait or not to wait for a refresh, which back then was rumored for early 2010. Look what we've got now, still no refresh, but the C2D MBP hasn't let me down for work. If I would've waited, I would still be on my (now dead) Dual Core 1.8 Windows Laptop.

I don't really see why Apple should rush with the updates, it's not like they are losing market share or customers when MAC sales are increasing and increasing. People will buy if they need them, not because they just want to. And if they need them, they won't really have a look at at the specs for as long as it works for whatever they need them.

The, say 20% bump in speed is really great, for some. But for 3 months and counting for it to come out? Nah, no thanks, I think I made the right choice.

Thanks for that registering to apple forums to post this hilarious comment. Wow you said apple is a cult? No, that's something that I 've not heard before, how original.

The funny bit is that Balmer has no windows phone and no windows tablet/reader to speak of, as well as failing miserably to sell any zunes, and neither has Michael Dell, nor are they showing record breaking sales like apple.

Apple though has both the products and the sales to show. :p

The point is, someone pulls this crap with anyone else at the level of SJ, and they'd get a canned email, if any response at all. People want to read into a 3-word response and get their Huggies in a bunch, because he didn't put more effort into a personal response about a future product refresh, which is already a hundred times more of a response they'd have gotten from any other CEO.

This is childish ********.

Many Mac users have large software investments and aren't going anywhere.

Very true. I have music software worth about a grand. To be fair though as a registered user I can just download the pc version for most of it as i'm entitled to either.

My main gripe is it'd be a PITA to switch. Done it once so I could do it again though. Easier this time having already gone the other way.

For all I know they'll ditch FireWire and I'll be screwed using it with all my audio hardware!

Don't get the "you don't want/need blueray" talk. I personally would rather more hdd space and will take my optical drive out and fit a second hdd, using an external CDROM when required, but it's each to his own and the option would be nice, especially for film lovers and video editors!

The premium only exists for those holding out for an imagined release, every day letting what's available drop in speculative value and footing the opportunity costs of not owning a Macbook Pro as desired (hence the misdirected resentment). The AFAWK speed bump of an Arrandale upgrade is virtually meaningless to those who don't "know" to wait for them.

Web and video? Get an iPad!

i thought about it. But i'd like a webcam and the ability to do whatever I want on it. I like watching Hulu and ESPN 360 and maybe doing very light photo editing. I'm not too keen on the whole iPad craze.

Eh, well it appears that there won't be any resolution until sometime in September (at least from the FTC). Personally I think Apple should just use discrete chips (preferably from ATI) and just be done with it.

You are right ATI doesn't have a chipset for Intel. They haven't since AMD brought them. It used to be that nVidia didn't have a chipset for Intel either.

Calling Apple fans cultists is a characterization, not an insult. And really, it's not for you to insist what the mods should or shouldn't do. They'll make their own decisions accordingly. If you were here years ago, you'd know what real flaming an ad homs look like.

Tell me how on earth a glass trackpad matters.

As for the resolution: lots of laptop makers have 15" screens with high resolutions. It's a well-recognized fact that the 17" isn't terribly portable, especially for those of us who fly a lot. What does the 27" iMac have to do with discussion of a laptop? Nothing. It's a non-sequitur.

Apparently you haven't looked at the benchmarks of the new integrated graphics compared to what was previously available on northbridge. I'd suggest you do. Hint: about 2x.

Calling Apple fans cultists is a characterization, not an insult.
Hint: about 2x.

Oh it's characterisation, how droll. So is "zombies" not an insult either that you are conveniently omitting? I 'd like someone to come up to you and call you a zombie... that would be very polite.

2x the integrated graphics from intel to the 3 year old nvidia igfx? That has got to be the most misinformed comment I 've read here in a long time, forgetting the fact that intel igfx is not open cl enabled which is partly the whole point of snow leopard, they are worse than even the 3 year old nvidia gfx, with some dubious marketing studies trying to make them look at least even in some respects. But 2X, that hilarious...

This makes no sense. If i go ahead and buy myself any MS product why should i care about how many Zunes has MS sold?
