This is from the UK site.

Wow! So even the 13" is running out?

It seems weird to me that all the models would get a refresh without an event. :/ We'll see if we hear anything on Monday, and by Tuesday, we'll finally know if something is up.

It all depends upon whether you can wait for another month to find out. The mobile, dual-core versions of the Sandy Bridge CPU aren't expected to ship until Feb. 20, 2011 (according to Intel).

I can wait another month if we are talking about a redesign and the upgrades...

One poster had a good point about the current mbp's have all the kinks worked out, so why risk it with a new line that is unfamiliar. This made me stop and think, and prompted me to post.

I am a lurker but I really value the intelligence and general kindness of the posters so I wanted your opinions! :)

My 2008 15" MBP was stolen out of my car just before new years :(

To replace it I was considering moving to an iMac and iPad combo, because the currently available MBP line is so lackluster. But now, with the news of this refresh, I'm excited about a 15" MBP again!

I'd be happy with Sandy Bridge and a GPU update, but I like some of the other ideas that are being thrown around. The flash/HD combo seems like a nice possibility.

As far as the optical drive debate goes- I think it's a matter of deciding what defines the "pro" line. Are they faster, more powerful machines? If that's the intent, then it would make sense for all three sizes to have the more powerful CPU options as well as a powerful GPU. While I don't wanna limit what the fine engineers at Apple are able to do, it does seem that it would be easier to put a powerful CPU and GPU in the 13" (and cool them) if the optical drive wasn't there. However, it seems unlikely that the drive would be removed from the 15" and 17" models. I have to admit, I'm biased. I know my wife only wants a 13", and she'd love to be able to game on it... So I'll put in my vote for the 13" MBP to have a nice CPU and GPU- and if they have to lose the optical drive to make that happen? So be it.

Yes, the mobile versions of the Arrandale and Sandy Bridge do uses slightly different sockets, since the Sandy Bridge package is notable smaller. However, if that's a real obstacle for Apple or anyone else then I guess the next revisions of the 15" and 17" MacBook Pros won't switch to use Sandy Bridge. Besides that I said "a near "drop in"" which isn't the same as saying an exact or direct drop in.

It'd be a slight redesign of the board, but otherwise, you're right; it's not like they'd need to redesign the case for it.

Well now I am in a huge quandry! I have been reading this thread for the past hour and not sure what to do! Need some pro advice from you guys.

I was hours away from pulling the trigger on a MBP 15" when I saw the rumors board last night.

Not in a true "hurry" so to speak but have a new photography class starting this week and wanted a new computer to correspond.

I want the dirty truth: should I wait?

Yes. Use the school computers and some form of portable storage device until they come out, and then buy one as soon as they do with your student discount.

Man, that really blows. For what it's worth, I'm sorry to hear it. :(

The good news is that I got a Time Capsule for Christmas :) All my data is secure!

I never leave my MBP in the car, I paid far too much for it.
I guess you won't be leaving yours again right? ;)

Is the Time Capsule safe to buy now? I read about that problem that most of the Time Capsule's would die a few months later. There was even a site about that RIP TC or something.

BTW I've been considering buying an airport express but I'm not sure if it fits what I need. It can connect to my Modem/Router and create/manage a wireless network for me right?
I supose so according to this: http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/features/sharing.html although it is limitted to 10 users, how good is it range wise?
Is it really worth it? Because for what it cost i can buy an excellent router.

Thanks for the help :)

The time capsules are now fixed. There was an earlier issue with the power supply, but it's fine now.

As far as the range and such: it works great for me. However, I haven't compared it with other wireless N routers.

Posting from the iPhone hey? :)
Thanks for the info on the TC!

Anybody got some tips for me regarding the airport express?

thanks

I'm considering switching to a MBP from an aging Windows based desktop I built several years ago. At the time I installed the best sound and graphic cards available as I work with music and video programs requiring plenty of processor power. Since I would likely purchase a 17" i7 MBP, the processor and graphics capability aren't a concern. What I'm not certain of is the quality of sound the Mac can produce given that I would generally listen to the audio with high-end headphones.

Is it February or April? Replacing a stolen MBP

Longtime lurker, first time poster.

My house was broken into a few days ago and the burglars took my 2010 15" MBP (purchased last August). This truly, truly sucks. But I have all my data (via Time Machine & Dropbox -- you all know about Time Machine; I can't recommend Dropbox highly enough!)

So, now the question is: replace or wait? I'm borrowing a computer from my work that works okay as a temporary solution, and they're willing to let me borrow it for a few weeks. I'm willing to wait until late February to pull the trigger on a replacement if that means the new line is out; that would be fantastic. (To tell the truth, I was not in love w/the 2010 MBP anyway -- and my particular unit seemed prone to kernel panics.) But I'm probably not able to wait until late April; if it's going to take that long, I might as well just buy one now.

Some people on this thread have suggested that we'll know more in a few days. Why is that / what are we waiting to hear or find out?

I used to leave my former Early 2006 MacBook in the car, but I kept it very well hidden; you'd have to want to break into my car for completely unrelated reasons to want to steal it. It was never stolen; instead I got Apple to lemon it for something unrelated, hence why it is my "former" MacBook. Yay for free new MacBook that I'm going to sell so I can buy the next 15" MBP. :)

I bought a used 500GB model for my sister and told my best friend's mother to buy one for her laptop. So far, both are still working and backing up their respective Macs just fine, while servin' up the internets.

You can either hook it up wiredly to an existing router to add wireless where there might not have been one, or you can use it to extend pre-existing WiFi capabilities. Or you can just use it to provide an AirTunes/AirPlay outlet on your WiFi network without extending your existing WiFi network at all. I'd say that unless you wanted to use AirTunes/AirPlay and/or share your printer, you're better off buying a Netgear or a DLink router as they work just as well and cost a third of the price of the Apple router.

I'm guessing that as far as sound cards go, the 17" MacBook Pro probably just uses whatever the latest mobile chip is from either Sigmatel or Realtek. Either way, it's pretty standard fare for a laptop, let alone an on-board sound card. As for the speakers, they're kind of weaksauce as far as laptop speakers go. But you'd want to plug in external speakers regardless.

DSGi Update

13" MB = 200+ in warehouse.

13" MBP = 700+ Now available in central warehouse. (New delivery from apple must have come in over weekend)

15" MBP= Both models out of stock, available in selected stores only.

17" MBP= Not even listed on website any more.

Still may mean nothing guys, we sell 13" mbps at a rate of 100s per week, but it is interesting to see we removed the 17" from the site.

How many 17" MacBook Pros do you sell per week? If it's low, it just might not be worth putting on your site...?

not relevant. 99% of all products we sell are on the website, regardless of how many we sell. It was on the site last week but listed as currently unavailable, removal of it completely is an interesting move. I'm not at head office so I don't often look into these things or know what it means, but removal of it completely is probably only done if they have no sign of getting new models in any time soon.

I really don't know what I am going to do if what some of you guys are saying is true. I was really hoping for a i3 or whatever 13" macbook pro, to differentiate it from the 13 inch white macbook.
If they keep the C2D and don't improve anything at all, it would really be annoying to fork over $1100 on a machine with a processor thats like 3? years old, considering that the the plasticy macbook has the same processor (i am attracted to aluminium though).
I'll be damned if they didn't upgrade this year's 13 inch macbook pro, and they used Ivy Bridge next year, as the performance would be considerably better compared to the 2011 (allegedly the same as 2010) and 2010 13" MBP.
I am willing to pay 1300ish, so what would you guys do if the above is true, and the 13incher pro is discontinued or not even upgraded? Would a 13 inch MBA be as powerful, more or less, as the possibly discontinued or not upgraded 13" MBP?

I'd look elsewhere if a computer I wanted to buy did not include what I wanted/needed/required.

Well, thank you, but this is Mac Rumors forum, guess what kind of computer I want? I've had enough windows laptops.
You have a 13" MBA, so you could have given some advise, performance-wise, rather than just tell me that.

To be honest mate, I'd wait until we know what the refreshed machines are like before any serious advice can be listened too.

I'm hoping the refreshed 13" MBP will be a redesign and have the option of WWAN as that would make me consider selling my MBA.

Haha suckers XD so far i'm guessing this is 21 pages of angry ppl who just bought a laptop about to go out of date. It really is quite amusing. For apple, i live by the macrumors buyer's guide because it's the only reliable source i can find. and those who don't and go out and buy a brand new 'outdated' laptop are angry for it.

But tbh it's too early to judge what the new ones will be like. If they're too Air-like then i wouldn't get one anyway, but then the previous generation will be cheaper and i'll buy an older one from bestbuy or something and upgrade it to some serious specs for the same price as buying the new one.

who knows when they will come now, possibly still on track for a rather imminent refresh. .... or even longer now due to intels screw up on chipset

MacBook Pro 13''

Will the macbook pro 13'' suffer any significant update in April?
Should I buy it now or wait until April?
Thanks

Oh my God!! MBPs and iMacs delayed?!

Intel just announced Sandy Bridge chipset design flaw and shipments stopped!!
(something to do with the SATA controller)...

Poor Intel.. the company is advising a $300 million hit to revenue.
