If you want something without an optical drive just go with the Air.
Same tired argument. Unlike the MacBook Air, a MacBook Pro without the optical drive would be more powerful than a MacBook Pro with the optical drive (either that or it's a bigger battery).

You guys keep making the same tired arguments about why the MBP would be better without the optical drive, and yet Apple still doesn't see it that way. And as always Steve Jobs is the one who tells us all what we need.

I really like the idea of not having an optical drive.

I use two computers for design about 3/4's of each day and I can count the number of times I've needed to use a CD/DVD drive on one hand.

Otherwise, there are so many more convenient alternatives that don't require me having to swap Bluray disks for backups or carry discs in shelves.

Backup: Networked drives/external HDDs/online storage

Transferring files: USB Keys/online/external HDDs

Music: Download from Amazon/iTunes

Movies: Use my PS3/Stream from online

I would be more than happy to use the space for some of the suggestions in here and have an external optical drive for rare times I've needed it. This is especially true if they used the space for an additional or larger battery, more memory card slots, bigger motherboard... That would accommodate the 99.9% of the time I'm on my laptop, versus the 0.1% of the time I've ever used the optical drive.

And yet… that is not necessarily the best way.

And yes, we are making the "same tired arguments" because you make the same tired arguments as to why the internal optical drive has to remain.

That makes you an MBA customer:)

The next "Book Pro" and MBA wave IMO is going to be all ipad based.
Larger screens more storage, get rid of keyboard (or use blue tooth etc.)

So, the fall 2,011 line up:

Ipad Pro 13 inch, 15 inch and 17 inch

with lots of connection options for external stuff.

MBA replaced by any of these and for a little while, so nobody cries they'll leave the current MBP 17 inch around until the sales numbers drop.

Maybe the one on Monday? when Steve goes:

Just one more thing :)
Bigger battery AND bigger motherboard? Sure…

Did I make that argument? I have said in the past that an option would be good, but that would violate the Steve Jobs Doctrine.
Ah, you mean the same doctrine that allows for multiple resolution options on MacBook Pros, multiple CPU/RAM/HDD configurations, and the Mac mini Server?

Yes, but it is in one convenient package. I often carry just my 13" MB in a Radtech sleeve. Needing to carry an ODD as well would be cumbersome.

True, but it works both ways; from my point of view carrying external HDDs is a PITA. Therefore the option of getting a standard macbook pro with a couple of extra ports HDMI? anothe couple of USB, and not having to buy an optibay would be better. Therefore I'd like the option, like the mac mini, to get an optical-less MBP that the MBA USB optical drive works with. AFAIK that MBA external optical drive draws more power than a standard USB drive, so the MBA (and also new mini) have higher power USB ports. If they did an optical-less MBP, which supported that drive I'm in!

I use my optical drive, not very often, but it's necessary, and I'd like to be able to plug one in. But I want to replace my desktop with a portable machine. Therefore it could do with a 1.5TB drive and needs as much processing power as possible! That's not a macbook air; that's a MBP with more space in the case!

I'm a little twisted...Should I wait for the updated 2.8 MBP or just buy the 2.66 that they have for sale right now? I need it for my web design job also for a little gaming...

Same boat

Im in the exact same position as you, I Want a high end pro to replace my current desktop gaming rig but now I've seen this rumour about an update i'm not sure what to do. The little extra CPU power will help but it won't be that noticable, BUT if there are any other new options added to the pro then I'll feel like an idiot for not waiting and wasting money if the price dropsfor what I just paid for .....

What to do ?!?!?!

Great computer, but there will be an update announced with a month or so. I'm waiting.:)

But will the update be worth the wait .. ? I hate apple for this update malarkey, I want to buy one but I know I should wait but I just want to buy one now! lol

The update WILL be worth the wait. The early 2009 Mac Pro is old technology.
I've waited since the phony March update rumor.

Is there anything that can show us what might be included in the update except the CPU speed bump? Like maybe additional outputs, or standard RAM bump?

Is there any sort of date?

If I knew that, I'd know when it coming. There is all sorts of speculation, but only Apple knows and they never reveal anything.
You can bet it will be more than just a processor upgrade. Hopefully, graphics performance options will be drastically improved.
Unless you absolutely need a new computer now, I'd wait. I am.

hmm, true, well, I will see how long I can wait it out, I'm going to try and wait till the beginning of Sept when I come back from holiday .. that should be long enough!

I pulled the trigger and just bought it...I'm not patient enough to wait haha

When you get it, can you tell me what's it like to do you web design on please and what programs your using, im assuming you'll be using photoshop, dreamweaver, illustrator etc etc .. thanks :D hope your happy with the purchase

Quad Processors on Laptops in general??

Shows how behind I am on the laptop processors front. I thought anything above Duo was gunna burn holes in the housing. I knew it was only time before this was sorted. Glad it is! shall keep my eye out for them and sit and prey i win the lottery during Uni :p
