I don't get it. Why do people back up on DVDs? It's slower, not a reliable. Why not just use a external HDD and backup with time machine? Doesn't everybody do that? Hearing people talking about backing up with discs sounds sooo 2002.

I've had many hard drives fail. I've never had an optical disc fail. I make archival backups to 25 gb Blu-ray discs. I have a Time Machine volume for my hourly backups and I do a once a month backup with a hard drive I keep at separate buildings than where my Macs are. So, I have 3 copies of everything on hard drives and one copy on optical media.

409 is real fine!

Ok, I will ask, what is a turbo boost?

I went and bought myself a brand new airmobile
it was custom made...quite a steal

With its high-blown motor.. and its hide away wings
you can push on the button and hear her sing.....

It allows the Core i5/i7 processors to run at higher clock rates as long as they are within their thermal envelope.

Someone claimed that MacCPUID actually showed it working, but I have never been able to replicate those results (and it appears that neither has anyone else). It would be real easy to tell if we had a program like CPU-Z...

O M G!

Is this update worth waiting another few months for? I was just about to order a MacBook Pro 15inch online this week and now I seen this article..

Should I just wait another few months?

Also will there be a longer lasting battery in the new macbook pros or will it still be 8-9 hours?

You may want to check out the problems with the new MBPs freezing. Personally, I would give Apple some time to work out their graphic switching function, though there is software that lets you decide whether to use the integrated or discrete graphics only.

What problem? I've got a new MBP 17" i7 and it has never frozen once.

A newly leaked Intel processor roadmap reveals that the company will be releasing a speed-bumped Core i7 processor this fall. The upcoming Core i7-640M will run at a base frequency of 2.8GHz with "turbo boost" speeds up to 3.46GHz. This new processor draws the same power as the current MacBook Pro processors so should be a natural upgrade for Apple.
Just remember the difference between a leak and an announcement. See, there was this lawsuit against IBM back in the day (of room-filling mainframes...) The point is, if Intel is not announcing it formally, they probably don't have everything worked out yet. Even after the formal announcement, there could still be major unforeseen delays. So, if you delay a needed purchase now, waiting for these processors, then you will be on macrumors 10 times a day asking "Where is it?" ;)

In any case, what the world needs now, besides a good 10 cent cigar, is an affordable, fast, high capacity, robust SSD that keeps its performance level for 3+ years of heavy use. Faster CPUs are always nice, but, I've seen the power of the SSD, and, overall, it makes much more difference than CPU speed for day-to-day activities. Unfortunately, I can't afford one myself right now.

please no update anytime soon! i just purchased my long awaited macbook pro 17" with the i7

Not a big deal anyway; the 140MHz increase over the current 2.66 will be by all intensive purposes unnoticeable. Though graphics may be a different story.

Apple notebook sales outstripped desktop sales years ago.

A useless statistic, since Apple stopped making affordable mid-range desktop systems years ago.

Apple's entry desktop+monitor is $1500 (mini+24"), for a closed system with 2 GiB and a 160 GB disk. ($1800 with 4 GiB and 500 GB)

The next model up is $3400 for desktop+monitor (3 GiB with 640 GB drive).

Does anyone wonder why laptop sales at Apple beat desktop sales?

1) To have multiple copies of your backups. Ever had your backup disk drive fail? (Yes, I have).

2) To have multiple backups in different locations. If you have a fire, both your original and backup might burnup.

I think apple has reached their limit with the thinness of the MBP. It get hot enough as is. The MBP out now is thinner than any other performance notebook. In the next case redesign it would be cool to have some kind of LED display on the trackpad or hey... how about an LED screen

You do realize that the current models already have "LED" screens. This is just the marketing term LCD manufacturers like to use to make LED-backlit LCD screens sound more different from CCFL-backlit LCD screens. In reality, the only king of true LED screen your going to find is large outdoor displays. Unless you're talking about OLED…

What are you blathering about? The iMac is a desktop system. It starts at $1,199.

Plus, Mac notebooks outsold desktops when there were still bargain eMacs (the CRT-based systems) around.

Seriously that's irrelevant? I said it was only a matter of time before optical media is dead. I never said getting rid of physical media would be a good idea. Get your facts straight before you respond. BluRay is going to be useless in good time anyway, if Apple doesn't plan on incorporating it then they should drop the optical drive. Even if they did have BluRay drives, once again it would only be a matter of time before that's dead..

You know what, LCD displays are going to be useless in good time anyway, we'll have some retinal chip or something. And USB 5 is just around the corner, so USB 3 is going to be useless in good time anyway. They should drop both.

Right now, today, THE format for movies is Blu Ray.

That it is missing from the entire Apple line up is a catastrophic misjudgement on behalf of Jobs.

Jobs has stated before he has no intention of getting bluray on the Mac. He's even called it dirt.

Yeah, I know it's stating the bleedin' obvious but I'd say that's gonna be a major update (with hopefully a long-needed opticaldrivectomy)

If they do remove the hard disk I hope they either use the extra space for a bigger battery or something useful; no, I don't want it thiner because I don't care about thinness.

What the heck are you going on about? if you want a desktop machine then just buy an iMac and be done with it. I swear some people have a 'a real computer is made up of many boxes' fetish and if it is an all in one it isn't a 'real computer'.

Jobs has stated before he has no intention of getting bluray on the Mac. He's even called it dirt.

No - he's called it ' a world of hurt '. A pathetic cop-out response given that the 'world of hurt' is one happily navigated by Sony, HP, Toshiba, Acer, Dell, Lenovo, etc etc etc. What the hell are they doing on the board of BR.

My bad - since like many people I'd never consider an all-in-one, I should have added "expandable" to "desktop system" in my post.

Would you still recommend buying the small 13'' MacBook Pro with 2,4 GHz Core2Duo? Or shall I wait for a new modell?

Isn't the Core2Duo already pretty aged?

The same reason Jobs doesn't want Flash on the iPad or iPhone - the iTunes store. Why buy a HD movie from iTunes when you can get it probably cheaper or rip it from a Blu-Ray? Why buy apps from the App store when you can use a Flash portal to access the same content for free?
Apple wants to control the market to make capital. It sucks but people don't seem to complain.

On the subject of DVDs - I think the market is shifting away from optical media. Most if not all software is available as a download, movies and music are available online, and if you are going to use optical media for these things I don't think many people will use them on the fly. Most people stick a CD in to rip music for 3 minutes. You can rip a DVD in under 10. And most people will watch movies on their TV or stream it from a HDD across a media centre. The fact is that optical media is dying - and good - it's fragile, it's big and compared to flash-based solutions it doesn't offer a decent amount of space. For backups why not use an external HDD? Or in the rare cases where you need a disk drive just grab an external USB disk drive. My two cents.

If there was a choice between having newer, faster, more advanced technology or keeping a single media that is way out of date then I would personally opt for the first option.

if they can put the same awesome cpu in macbook 13 inch
i will buy it

15 inch is very heavy for me to bring together with my company notebook when i travel, i must take my company notebook for admin, so i can only take a small and light notebook with me.

13 inch is just right, 15 is too big.

USB thumbdrives will be a perfect replacement for optical media. Again, we are not saying physical media is on its way out. We are saying optical media is on its way out.

Personally, I think that physical media is dead. People who still advocate it are grasping onto an obsolete technology, and will certainly be proven wrong over time as it continues to move further into niche products.

You obviously think that Jobs Flash "thoughts" was a rationalization-- but, the problem is, that it is all true, rationalization or not. Adobe should be working night and day to face up to its issues.
