That's interesting. Australia has always been one of Apple's early adopters, other than the US, the largest amount of Mac users probably reside in Australia (as a percentage of our population). Being a keen photographer (shameless plug - my website - www.macro-images.com), I go through the same thing whenever Canon is overdue to release a new 1 series body. You watch the signs - leaked documents from retailers, etc, timelines, previous release habits, stock levels, etc. What I'm seeing now, at least in Australia and from what other Australian customers are saying, is that Apple has almost no stock of MBPs in Australia. That's a very odd thing for a major manufacturer, especially with a very popular line that sells very well and earns big profits. They wouldn't do this unless said product range is no longer being manufactured on the manufacturing lines and they are getting rid of existing stock levels. If Apple announces new MBPs next week, you can guarantee that they've been actually manufacturing the new range for the past several months, to build up stock levels for the new release. There's nothing worse than releasing a product to an avid group of waiting fans and then having to tell them that we don't have stock, you'll have to wait. A point of example is Canon with the Mark IV, which was announced in September but no stock was made available until very late in December 2009. If you hang out on photography forums, you'll run into a fair bit of criticism on Canon about this.

Anyways, fingers crossed! I hope I'm right, not because I want to be a bigwig or showoff, but simply because it means I'll get a new MBP with new features *grins*!

Ah Dave this is sounding like good news to me!! :) I went to jb hifi several weeks ago who said there was only 1 15" MBP in the east coast..... I might check in with them again this weekend and see what they say!
I do hope your onto it and will be holding my breath until then!! Thanks again for the heads up!!

It's bollocks. We've got reasonable stock and machines are still shipping to us.

No idea when they're gonna update these things, I'm thinking more and more it'll be after the iPad, maybe sometime in April but Apple doesn't tell us anything either.

when are these goddamn mbp's coming out! waiting desperately... and don't wanna buy the current model. Any idea if there will be a major price hike? I can't remember very well, but do apple normally put the prices up on new releases of hardware?

i know for the last MBP release the aussie dollar was pretty poor and the result was an inflated price of hw in australia compared to the US. Dollar is pretty strong now so i wonder if prices will remain the same or be slightly lower...? wishful thinking i rekon, but fingers crossed it won't be too high.

pumped that apple .... may be bringing out a revision soon.... pissed i don't know when soon is.

is get the feeling this is the general consensus :)

Okey, so I just spilled hot tea over my MacBook some days ago, and got some $ from insurance today, but I really need a MacBook soon. So speed it up!:D

Hi from Spain guys!
i was just thinking that is funny how everyday news and hope comes from a different part of the world..today is Australia hehe

Yes, it might be bollocks what this guy from JB hi fi has said to me, but tell me this - why are they telling me that they can't get any stock? Why are they not providing me with a MBP unit that I've *already* paid for in advance? Taking a customer's money and then not giving them the product doesn't bode well for customer relations. The only reason why I could see them trying this stunt is to try a swifty and say they've already given me my unit, and pocketing the money without really giving me a unit. And God help them if they try that stunt with me.

I've given it some thought tonight and I've decided that I'm going in tomorrow and asking for a refund on my monies. I'll hold onto my money until Apple announces it officially and stock becomes available. The sales guy did tell me that his boss wouldn't like giving a refund, but hey, tough luck, by law, if they can't provide the item, they MUST give a refund. They can take it up with the QLD department of fair trading and/or my lawyer if they want to try funny things.

YWhy are they not providing me with a MBP unit that I've *already* paid for in advance?
Because they just gambled, and stopped ordering new stock in anticipation of new models, based on the known refresh frequency of the MBP's?

I see what you're saying, but I really doubt it. Most customers wouldn't put a full deposit on a unit for starters. Most customers would try elsewhere if they were told there was no stock etc. JB Hi fi, like most other retailers, hate to see a customer go elsewhere. I really doubt it - what you're saying doesn't make one iota of a sense.

Hopefully Apple is taking this time to incorporate new Hardware:?
Like:
1. HDMI
2. USB 3.0
3. Blu Ray

4. 1G Vid Card (including intigrated Discrete switching)
5. Larger Hard Drives
6. Heat Transfer/management
7. Battery Replacement capability
:D

Yeah right!

Those banner ads are OLD banners ads before the last round of price cuts down under.

See these Press Releases:

MacBook Pro:

(starting from $1899)

Mac Pro:

(starting from $4499)

Likewise with the NZ prices, the Mac Pros were originally the prices shown in those pictures over there:

($5599 and $7299)

So there's no new products leaking here, they've just accidentally reverted to some old ads.

Nice find, well done. If they are reverting to old ads (by mistake), still something conspicuous..

Confused

I'm about 3 weeks to buy my first MBP, I'm looking to the 15"
Specs:
15-inch: 2.8GHz
Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB Memory
320GB hard drive1
SD card slot
Built-in 7-hour battery2
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M + 9600M GT with 256MB
Ships: Within 24hrs
Free Shipping
$1,999.00
In fact, at macmall I can find the same specs to US$1790 or so..

But some guy told me about the HP Envy US$1,699

• Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-720QM Quad Core processor (1.6GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.8 GHz
• 4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
• 320GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
• 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5830 Graphics - For i7 Processors
• 15.6" diagonal High Definition LED HP Brightview Widescreen Display (1366x768)
• Webcam Only
• Intel Wireless-N Card with Bluetooth
• HP Color Matching Keyboard
• 6 Cell Lithium Ion Polymer Battery

I will choose Mac of course because of I want a MAC, but, what about specs? how far is my MBP in terms of performance? considering the envy settings

That is going to depend entirely on what you use it for. The specs on the HP would likely give you a bump in rendering/photo/video editing areas, but you probably wouldn't see any difference in casual uses such as web surfing, document creation, and e-mail (the three things most people use their computers for it seems, other than farmville which I still can't comprehend).

Even if a new MBP comes out it might not be the best computer for you unless you need the added bump in graphics ability (Dedicated on the fly switching is a nice feature already present in a number of PC notebooks) but if you don't need it, no real reason to buy it. The C2D can handle some rendering, it can do as much A/V editing as most people are likely to do (which is maybe once or twice a year) and won't have any trouble with simple photo editing. It might take slightly longer to apply a filter as compared to the i7, but keep in mind people have been using this generation for those very tasks for nearly a year. You're not going to get Mac Pro performance out of an MBP regardless of it being c2D or i3,5, or 7.

Try and figure out what you use your computer for most, what you imagine you're likely needs are, and don't get sold on tech you don't need. That said, even if you don't need the new tech it might be worth waiting out its release for a price drop in the current generation to clear out stock. You don't need to pay for tech you don't need, but you also shouldn't have to pay substantially more than the tech you are buying is worth.
