I just got my first ever mac today! The standard macbook late 2009 unibody. And Im Loving it!

Once u go mac, u never go back. Damn! Its so nice.

With that out of the way, do you think i made a dumb choice getting the macbook now, when its updates coming?

Also is it just the macbook pro or the macbook also that gets updated? And finally (sorry for all the questions) What kind of update do you think is coming the macbook pro? i5 and a better gpu?

Anyways im loving my mac :D

Eh i would have waited but it depends on your situation. By no means did you buy a piece of crap laptop, but if you could have waited then you probably made a bad choice considering the chance it could happen any day now.

henrikrox,

Congrats on the laptop. As long as you're happy with it that's all that really matters. The Macs really do provide a great experience. That said, I don't know if I, personally, would have bought one of the current models at the current price. I'm not sure I agree with plaxico either (they could have been coming out any day now for MONTHS). However, if one is only concerned with the quality and speed of the laptop, there are better values out there. I italicized better, because it really depends on what exactly you're looking for. Like I said in the beginning; if you're happy with the laptop you got for the price you paid, then it's a worthwhile deal.

Hi there, firstly welcome to the good side! Hope your enjoying your new mac, these forums are very useful for getting the most out of it. Secondly, I think your fine, I'm taking it that its the white macbook you have? If it is good choice, spiffing laptop even at entry level. The macbook pro models are up for a revamp, I am personally waiting for the new MBP.

Hope your enjoying the forums!

I've been reading this and the bestbuy SKU thread since mid-January, biding my time until the refresh. However, last night the decision was made for me: a clumsy but well-intentioned cat caused a small avalanche, resulting in a rather large volume of liquid being dumped onto/into my macbook (RIP). Earlier today, I ordered my replacement mbp.

So much for waiting! Thought you guys might find that amusing

I`ve been hearing stuff about the student discount Apple gives going away at some point in the year. Is this true or can you get the student discount any time

I wanted a Core iX MBP so much and had been waiting for the MBP update since the very first rumor of the year 2010 about the January iPad event. Then February came, rumors appeared and fact disproved it. Then we are in March now and once again we haven't seen anything positive.

I have bought a Fujitsu laptop last week with Core i3 330M, 4GB of RAM, 500GB hdd, HDMI output, fingerprint sensor, express card slot, sd card reader, spill resistant keyboard, usb charging (when power off), a weight of only 1.6kg.....and of course the great build quality and durability of the Fujitsu brand, for $1,638. Windows 7 works well.

availability

hey guys,

do you know how long it takes from the launch of a new mbp untill it is really available in the shop. i'm in sydney right now and it would kill me if it is released an i have to wait 4 weeks to get it. like the ipad was released over a month ago and it's still not available here.

thanks and greetz from australia

MacBook Pro 13" @ $999.00

I have a 2005 PowerMac G5 PPC 1.8 3gigs and I'm in desperate need of an upgrade!! The $999.00 MBP 13" offer ends March 31st and I'm hoping that there is a new Macbook Pro out before then. I bought the G5 33 days before apple announced the intel processors and felt completely duped. Now the G5 will barely process an hour of video in 5-6 hours and can't play 720p video wihout dropping half the frames and skipping. Honestly, I'm sure the 13 mbp will be an incredible upgrade from what I have but all those feelings of missing out are creeping back.

Should I wait? Time is money but I'm getting by.

Hi,

I got my first Mac in September of 2004. An iBook that I had to pay $100 extra for the wireless card. The day the credit card statement arrived Apple released a faster iBook that included the wireless card AND was $100 cheaper. My brother in law bought that one.

At the end of the day it doesn't make a difference. The computer still runs this very moment and it got my wife through university. Meanwhile the brother in law's iBook died last summer and he still has a year to go for school.

I think it all comes out in the wash. As long as you recognize that your computer is a tool and not a social statement you'll be fine.

I've been hearing this since September 2009 ...

MacBook Pro clones?

I agree with everyone here that MacBook Pro is no longer a good value and that the update is too far away in the future to wait.

My question is, what is a good MacBook Pro substitute? Windows 7 is fine, it doesn't need to be Mac OS X but the hardware should be the same or better.

This should be Intel Core 2010 processor, awesome body, light and very long battery life. Also screen resolution should be at least 1440x900.

My understanding is some of these may fit the bill:

- Sony Vaio Z series
- Thinkpad Edge 13, 14, 15
- Dell Studio XPS 16
- HP Envy

Any others or better options?

Chat w/ Apple Store Rep an hour ago

So, about an hour ago – in my attempt to try to get anything out of that damn (but admittedly still adored) company named after the fruit that Eve suckered Adam with – I went, as usual – like a cat going back to his dry, empty food bowl night after night thinking that MAYBE some SPECTACULAR surprise might be there (e.g., an Arrandale i7 MBP).

After my pitiful, desultory, almost nightly ritual of going through the whole Apple Store customization process and making myself a really expensive, amazingly powerful MacBook Pro, then EVEN putting it IN MY SHOPPING CART (I mean, how frigging daring & exciting is that?!) like I'm really going to buy it, I decided to initiate a chat with an Apple Store rep on the basis of "wondering about shipping dates"
(cause, I'd heard some people were getting wacky shipping dates very recently... like 12 days, and I was hoping it was a sign that the arrival of the Chosen One was near. I also had a hallucination that I might squeeze some tiny grain of info out of the darn rep... even if he/she didn't know what extended shipping dates might mean.) I was desperate, I tell you. DESPERATE. What could I do but something stupid and irrelevant and worthless? I had no choice.

So I clicked the cheerful little "Need to chat with an Apple Store blah blah blah? Click here."

The following chat ensued:

ME: I heard from a friend that the "ships in 24 hours" statement might not quite be true, and that some people are getting estimates that are very different, but only AFTER they click "Buy". I've heard in the range of 12 days in some circumstances. If I order tonight (wink, wink) will I get it in the next couple of days. Cause I really, really need it.
APPLE CHAT REP: Go through the process and tell me what it says at the bottom below the picture of the laptop you ordered. Put it your shopping cart and look for the estimate. I will standby for you :)
ME: (After going through process) It says 2-3 days. :(
APPLE CHAT REP: Great! Does that meet your needs?
ME: Um... (grumble, grumble) yeah... I guess so.
APPLE CHAT REP: Is there anything else I might help you with today?
ME: Well, uh, um, yeah... uh... I was just wondering if there's any sign that the new MacBook Pros are coming out in the next few weeks or so... but I'm thinking there's no way you'd know that. Right?
APPLE CHAT REP: We find out literally the moment you do, sir. We have no inside knowledge about release dates of any new products.
ME: Yeah, I figured. :(:(
APPLE CHAT REP: But it is unlikely. The MacBook Pros that are available now have only been out for a few months. So I think it's quite unlikely.
>>> ME: (thinks:) ?????!!!?? wtf. A COUPLE MONTHS? (to him:) Okay, thanks.

I mean, seriously. Have they no shame?

I dont think this arrandale MBP is coming. Ive not stopped hearing it for the past 6 months...

Morgan

come on, people keep saying how long they have been waiting. in reality the update was only supposed to be last month so they are only a month over due according to their history of updating the mbps. i however have been waiting 12 weeks today as thats when i decided i wanted a mbp, 12 weeks later and now i can afford it but have to bloody wait so i do see how you are annoyed but they are only a month behind so i hope they will come out soon.

Apple people won't tell you anything. Apple is renowned for being the most tight lipped (and other body parts tight too) company in existence. Anyone other than high end managers and maybe r&d won't know jack. Seriously. When I worked @ Apple Australia, we DID find out about updates the same time as everyone else, including consumers. Seriously. Think big mushrooms (kept quiet and fed lots of BS).

"Everyone here"?

Why are you asking for advice on which garbage PC you should buy on an Apple-centric site? Just get whichever one has the most-off coupon and enjoy what you get while it lasts.

Thanks Azazel. I have read on this forum that Windows 7 is quite good now and not garbage PC. I admit I could not read all the messages. I also read "waiting for Arrandale" thread and it is not coming to Mac. Apple also confirmed according to forum that refresh is not likely coming soon. I don't know what to say otherwise! :(

I have read other people are getting different brands because of the Apple store problem, I was simply interested in knowing more about the brands and suitable recommendations from like-minded people.

I may get the iPad but I still need a laptop, preferably a good MacBook pro clone! :D

Hi there, as a recently former apple employee I can sympathize with this guy, no one in apple will know who can say anything. Anyone in apple has to sign a non disclosure agreement, this will only be engineers, marketing, back of house in stores and even the top cats.

The MacBook pros could be sitting in an apple store right now for release very shortly however anyone who knows anything can't say a peep. We used to go into work and find out that day a new product was launching and got a run down on it there and then. Good try though!

Azazel seems a little high strung. I got tired of waiting (been waiting since december) and bought a HP Envy yesterday. It's a very nice computer and I don't regret my decision. The build quality is much better than my old SR MBP -07 and even if the new MBP arrives next tuesday I wont beat myself up for it.

The Envy fitted me because i don't travel much and wanted a desktop replacement. It's almost silly how much horsepower HP has packed into that small package.

Thanks mate!

Yes its white mac, and allthough it is the entry model, its more then fine for my needs, basic surfing, a bit of iphoto and some pages work.

I could have waited, but i just sold my windows pc based desktop for 1500 dollars, and im going to spend that on a imac when the next revision is out. But in the meantime im going the macbook:D

I think they honestly have no idea. Most Apple phone support employees are not the usual people on forums like this. And of course, as has been mentioned, either they have not been told anything and if they were, or found out, they are bound to silence. Or get fired.

Well...went in tonight to pick the MBP or talk to the guys. I was told that they had my unit out the back put away for me but had no 15" at all. I gave it a thought and said stuff it, stuff the new MBPs, I can't really say no to them since I agreed to buy it, etc. So, I'm now the proud new owner of a 13" MBP :)

Setup was a doddle and my parents were absolutely impressed with the keyboard and back lighting, as well as the isight cam too. Not to mention that it picked up my wireless modem straight away and I was surfing the net after the 3 minute setup wizard. Both were really impressed by the finish and build quality too, and dad loves the magnified dock effect ;-) Neither have seen a Mac before tonight. Oh, and my dad was absolutely blown away by the magnetic power connector. Before I know it, my dad will probably have gotten one lol!

Happy MBP'ing guys.
