My first post, but I've been a lurker for awhile.

It's time for a new laptop and I REALLY want to buy a Mac, because frankly I need a break from windows. And yea I think they're pretty! :D But at the same time I'm looking at these DELLS and other laptops that already have the i7 chips in them. Of course if I'm going to get a new laptop I want the latest and greatest. I've heard good things about windows 7, but I've always wanted a Mac and now that I have the opportunity to get one they are making it hard for me to decide by taking forever to update. Don't know how much longer I can hold out...

What would you guys do in my spot?

if you can afford to wait, then do so.

So...

So...you want ur first laptop, i7 chip and the latest an greatest!
Why the i7? U probably don't know why. This is the problem! Everyone wAnts the latest and greatest with no functional need. Get the
mcb pro now and u won't be sorry. New ones will not be out till may/June.

Well at the moment that is my intention! I'm glad I decided to do research and not just go out and buy one. I would have been bummed to buy it then they come out with the new ones a few months later.

Thanks!

Actually no...not my first laptop or computer for that matter..but thanks for the advice. :)

I agree with gothamm. I think the prudent thing to do is wait if you can. Nobody knows for sure when Apple will release the new MBP's. Although a May/June release is possible I personally find it highly unlikely. I'm guessing like everyone else but I'm thinking we'll see the new machines in a week or two. Good luck!

??? Maybe only 3-4weeks away....

I have been hanging out for a 15" MBP since Sept 2009.

Today, I cracked and thought "stuff it, I am buying a CD2 as it will serve my needs and i'm sick of waiting for every Tuesdays non release!"

I went to an Apple reseller - who had none in stock and said his prediction was 3 weeks until the release, no evidence just his thought (and that they had none in stock but could get one if I really wanted it)

then I went to JBHi Fi - an apple reseller also - they also had none in stock and said they could order one in if I really wanted it, but that their new stock order sheet thing said (and I saw it with my own eyes!) arrival mid April - it didn't say new Mbps but the guy seemed to think they wouldn't be the current model.

Read into that what you will....

I think I am going to wait (I don't really have a choice though as none are in stock!) until mid April if by Anzac day long weekend (25th April) there is nothing.... I may resort to using my iPhone for the rest of my life!!!

Susan,

What will you use the MBP for? If it's just normal stuff like email/surfing/general usage, you won't notice much of an improvement with the new models. They'll benefit heavy imaging (photoshop, large files and layers etc), rendering (maya, etc) or video processing. Even the current MBP will handle most of this without too much issue, unless you're real *hardcore*. I gave it a thought last night and said stuff it and grabbed the current 13" that jb hi fi had for me (I probably could have said no, I want a refund and waited if I'd really wanted to). I don't regret getting the current MBP and I'm a power user - many of my images are 50mb 16 bit tiff files after conversion from RAW cr2 format, add layers etc and they can grow very large - my largest file was around 3gb in size (panorama). The current MBP would probably struggle with that, but it'd handle it, but just be slower than my "monster" PC setup.

Hey, guys. I ordered my Macbook Pro a few days ago, it should be coming monday or tuesday. However, I just found out that there is supposed to be an upgrade coming soon. Do you think I should return it?

Im going to college this year(September) and will be majoring in Software Engineering and Business. Do you think the core 2 duo will last me for 5 or 6 years if i major in Programming. I ordered the 3.06 ghz core 2 duo processor with 4 gigs of ram, 15".

Basically my main question is, would the iX processor be that much faster/better for a developer/programmer. As I mentioned I will be majoring in Programming starting this year.

Also, is there a possibility that there will be an hdmi output in the upgraded mbps?

Thanks in advance.

So I held out for a whole 2 months because of this dam website, and yesterday I finally gave in and purchased the higher end 1499 core 2 MBP. One thing that finally had me was the my local Apple store (Valley Fair Mall here in San Jose, CA) told me that I actually had a whole 30 days to return or exchange if Apple ever finally did decide to refresh these MBP's. Given that, I finally purchased my MBP and absolutely love it, and I love the security of a whole month being able to exchange. If you're on the fence about it (like I was for the longest time), buy one now and TRUST ME, you won't regret it.

The local mac reseller here in Belgium, MacLine, has a action running where you get discount (ranging from30 to 100€) if you return a old computer to buy a new mac.
It ends 15 april, so maybe we may see new macbooks and pro's by half of april.

hi Dave,

I really am going to use it for photo editing raw images, web surfing, emailing - maybe video editing in the future - so really I think just basic stuff.... And iagree, probably the cd2 would be fine for me needs and I had convienced myself of this!! Which is why I went to buy one today - however, both resellers were not enthusiastic to order me one - suggesting I wait!
Back to the old waiting game!!!
If there were plenty in stock - I think I would take your advice and purchaise - but it appears they are hard to fine :(

Apple can't beat this with their price. I picked this up for my dad last week for $1099 as he is a PC user. It is impressive laptop with amazing specs. Apples laptops are old now.

C'mon Apple what are you waiting for as I need to upgrade from my Powerbook G4, I love my 24" iMac but I need a new macBook Pro, hope you lower prices too as the competition did, SONY VAIO is not crap, Powerbooks were designed by SONY guys originally.

Apple don't even try to compete on price for laptop and desktop computers. If you want a Mac, then you pay the asking price for it or you don't get one.

I too want to update my aging powerbook G4, but I'm not going to jump ship and return to the horrible PC experience. My Mac Pro is my main computer until the new MBPs are released (whenever that may be).

(1) CD2 is a waste of your money for the prices Apple is charging. This technology is 3-4 years old.

(2) MacBook Pros are not hard to find by any stretch of the mind. Maybe in Aussie? But then you could still order from the Aussie Apple store?

(3) To recap (1), don't waste your money on CD2 especially if you are doing photo and video editing.

As i've said before, i ordered a MBP 15' on the 10 March.
It still has not been assigned to a carrier nor a tracking number.

The only information i have is ' In transit to final destination - carrier details to be updated shortly.' and 'Estimated Delivery Date (Subject to change) 26*Mar*2010 (Subject to change) *
Current Delivery Status In Transit to Customer - Shipment on Schedule 19*Mar 2010

However, these dates keep changing all the time; yesterday the wstimate delivery time was 24th March and the current delivery status was 18th of March.

They really must be out of stock here in Europe.
I usually receive itens from the Apple online store 3 days aftr placing my order.
And now, for some speculation, To receive it on the 26th it means it would be shipping on the 23ed, a tuesday...

I'm sorry for trying to get you to be specific. However, an answer "anything CPU intensive" is kind of like "well duh!". My point in asking was what types of activities are SO CPU intensive that having an iX chip would be that much better. Getting hostile only makes people not want to ask questions to begin with. Sorry for the bother to your day.

LOL!! magicman, he is not being mean in any way..he provided you with several reasons why new MBP's would be worth the wait; however, you do sound as if you would like to be persuaded to purchase the current MBPs. He also provided you with the most common sense response, you are paying the same price for last years technology which is not very smart. This forum is open to all questions; however, from what you wrote I believe you got the answer you did not want to hear. I say take his advice, go and purchase the current MBP because it is still a great machine and sounds like it will fit your needs perfectly. In addition, it seems like you don't have any concern for the price. I say join us in the horrific wait that is playing with our every emotion if you truly are interested in the new MBP or, if not, just purchase the current MBP which will please you much more! INSTANT GRATIFICATION IS ALWAYS GOOD!! :) Well, in whatever decision you decide, enjoy your MBP!!

Are there others with the same delivery-'problem'?
If yes, i think it is a good sign...
If not and you're the only one, it could be bad luck in your case (and I would be sorry for you!) (and for us ;))

i ordered my 15" MBP 3.06 4GB on March 16 at 2:00 pm eastern time US. It has already left shanghai

Picked up SHANGHAI CN Package received after FedEx cutoff

Good grief people, get a grip. The difference between Core iX and Core2Duo is not that large. We're talking a low double-digit percentage here at best. Even for people who constantly work with CPU-bound applications, that's not going to make or break anything. It's fine to want the latest (and I do too), but let's not pretend it makes that much of a difference. If your time REALLY is so precious and valuable, you already have a quad core desktop to do your serious crunching.

Price drop on refurbed Mac Pro in UK

There's a big 8-core machine in the refurb section of the UK apple store. It's been there for a couple of weeks, all selling at £3199 or something.

Today I looked and it's dropped £1000 off it's price, now sitting at £2,139.01

Pretty good buy I imagine... but I'm keen on the 12-core machine - the new xeons are supposed to be crazy fast.

Refurbished Mac Pro 8-Core 3.2GHz Intel Xeon

Two 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors
2GB (2x 1GB) of 800MHz DDR2 ECC fully buffered DIMM
500GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s 7200-rpm hard drive
Two 16x SuperDrives (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB (two dual-link DVI ports)

Sounds great, but this thread is about Mac Book Pro, not Mac Pro :p

Sure sure... I guess I've just been caught up in thinking that both lines will be updated at the same time, so I thought I'd chuck this price reduction in as some sort of evidence that they are pricing to clear old stock?

The MBP you have now is more than suitable for programming. I've programmed on a dell inspiron 1520 with 1.5 ghz Core 2 Duo, 1gb RAM, Vista with no problems(back when I first began programming)!

Well, I've been waiting for an update of the line to the new i7s but I fear I can wait no longer. My solution is clear. Drop a grand in parts and build my own computer and try to get OSX on it. Yes, my solution is a hackintosh.

I was ready to throw 3k down on a MacPro but these delays in the i7s are just unbarable and I refuse to pay premium price on outdated hardware.

The good news tho, is that if I do do this, it will get me through until the summer and then I can drop the rest of the money I was going to drop on the MacPro on a new MBP. Hopefully they'll have the updated hardware by then.

I just cant take my dell and old G4 Macbook any longer. It's time for an upgrades and I feel confident I can build my own computer.

.... but it'll probably just wind up being a headache in the end.
