Everyone who is mentioning the i5/i7 cpu issue with the GPU should realize there is a deeper architectural issue to overcome with this mbp upgrade and will therefore require a longer time line for delivery. This is not the typical adding diskspace, backlit keyboard, faster CPU etc. This sounds like a major overhaul of the insides. I'm guessing May or June at best if this is all true. PC no longer competes with Macs. You either want one or the other because of the OS. No one who knows anything is buying a computer based on CPU speed so Apple is not worried about an HP product. Apple OS rules. Long time windows user and DO NOT want to go back. Who cares about the CPU. I use the OS.
Apple will never let anyone know about product upgrades in advance because people will stop buying! If they said it will be out in April all sales up until then would freeze. Like I said in an earlier post, Apple plays us all like a concert pianist. Get use to it.

i wont argue with u that apple Os may rule because i am lookign to buy my first mbp but i do disagree in that the only thing that matters is the OS and no the spec or the cpu becuase i do care how fast my computer works, how hot it gets, how much will the battery last... but yeah they do play us which is not a great strategy to attract new costumers..

Hey everyone um did you notice that in the US apple store they took that Piece Of Donkey Diarrhea called the iPad off the front page. Thank God at least now we know that apple is willing to take off the god damn iPad off the front page. All it took was the death of Jerome B. York. Now there is hope that apple may put a new home page saying the NEW MACBOOK PRO With CORE i7 Processors.:D

Quite possibly another stoopid question

This may sound a bit stupid on my part, and forgive me if it does. But I have not kept up with chipsets/specs/all the bells and whistles stuff on the inside of computers for a while now. I used to, but it got to be too "all consuming". that said, here's my question. What exactly is the point of getting an i3/i5/i7 based computer? I mean for what types of work (other than video editing) will it truly be better than the C2D?
I'm looking for honest answers here guys. I really would like to know why I should hold out based on *use* as opposed to *price/value*.

what if they want to hold of on the MBP till after the release of the ipad 3g :(since that is also when the ipad goes world wide :(

btw i was thinking of getting the 2.8ghz 15in dual core, is the refresh worth the wait since the new ones might be 2.6ghz??

Any and all CPU intensive applications.

At the risk of sounding dense, like what? I mean specifically, what applications other than video editing and gaming? If I'm not going to crunch numbers on a *HUGE* spreadsheet, or compile a program on my laptop, what else would I *really* need the latest and greatest processors for?

The main reason is getting your money's worth.

Apple has this bad habit of never lowering prices on existing models. This means that towards the end of a model's run, it still costs just as much as when it came out, even though the value of the hardware has gone down, sometimes significantly.

When it's been this long since the last refresh, it's worth waiting a little longer to buy so that you get your money's worth. They may bump the baseline memory quantity as well.

Biggest example of this was the Time Capsule; they were still selling the 1TB model at $499 even though 1TB hard drives had dropped in price by 50% since the TC came out! This wasn't fixed until the 2TB model came out, and now it's starting to seem expensive as well.

Apple what are you waiting for???

Apple can't beat this with their price. I picked this up for my dad last week for $1099 as he is a PC user. It is impressive laptop with amazing specs. Apples laptops are old now.

C'mon Apple what are you waiting for as I need to upgrade from my Powerbook G4, I love my 24" iMac but I need a new macBook Pro, hope you lower prices too as the competition did, SONY VAIO is not crap, Powerbooks were designed by SONY guys originally.

So other than *getting your money's worth*, is there a real reason to have the latest and greatest machine on the planet? I understand future proofing purchases and price v. value v. what the competition has (don't get me started on WinDOS.....I left that pitiful OS in the dust a year ago and won't look back), but what *applications* would I *need* the core iX processors for? I'm trying to figure out why I would really need to purchase *that processor family* from a standpoint of use.

If Apple wants to increase their Computer Market Share they should be competitive with the rest of brand name laptops out there as the Gen X and Baby Boomers will go for quality and price now that we have gone through recession. You gotta admit Apple is pricing the market to high now and they don't need to cater specific loyal mac clientele which is less than 10% of market. Apple makes majority of money on iPods/iPhones/iTunes not on computers, iPod saved Apple from further bankruptcy in the past.

You keep doing this - it's like the 'What have the Romans ever done for us' Monty Python sketch.

Other than video editing, gaming, huge number crunching spreadsheets, compiling programs, the aqueduct and sanitation..

You don't NEED a Core iX for anything. But it will make just about everything faster.

It seems like you want us to convince you of something you don't want to be convinced of. Go and buy an MBP right now, I'm sure you'll love it.

Also consider the possibility of some changes in the MBP shell. IE: USB 3.0 (doubt it), Blue Ray (doubt it), HDMI (possibly) who knows what Apple really has up their sleves but if I'm waiting this long (since dec) it better be worth it lol

I'm sorry for trying to get you to be specific. However, an answer "anything CPU intensive" is kind of like "well duh!". My point in asking was what types of activities are SO CPU intensive that having an iX chip would be that much better. Getting hostile only makes people not want to ask questions to begin with. Sorry for the bother to your day.

Thanks. That's the kind of answers I was hoping to elicit. I appreciate it.

I wondered (and maybe it's been mentioned elsewhere) if perhaps they would release the iPad 3g AND new MBPs all on the same day. My thought is that perhaps they put a 3g modem in the MBP's and have a big 3g release. 3g modems seem to be becoming more common and clearly they already have a subscription model worked out with AT&T for the iPad, so it wouldn't be a stretch to develop one for MBP's too. The iPad 3g still just has a nebulous "late April" release date. They could pretty easily wait for the non-3g news to die down a bit (a couple weeks?) and then release the 3g and MBP which would cause a much bigger splash than just "oh yeah, the 3g is out now too". This would also give the MBP something not yet offered standard on other laptops.

(NOTE: I have no inside knowledge and am 100% speculating on a possible release approach.)

Love Macs Hate Waiting

I totally get the frustration of waiting for the new MBPs to come out.
I didn't realize people waited like this until I started Googling around
to see if there was info on it...
so, if it makes anyone feel better — you're not alone in
watching the calendar to get their new Mac.

I do have a question though, I've never had a laptop, and I'm debating
whether to get a huge screened Mac or the handy, portable Macbook Pro.
Leaning toward MBP, but wondering how well higher end video editing programs works on the smaller
screen vs. the huge desktops???
Do any MBP users wish they had a desktop instead?
Thanks!

i think many people will perfer to buy the mbp for portability then hook their mbp to a larger screen to use at home. so essentially, you'll compromise between the two :]

I'm in the exact same boat. I've been reading this thread every day lately hoping for good news as I need a new computer badly. I've always wanted a Mac, but I'm not going to blow all my money when I can get a lot more in a PC. I'm leaning towards a 27 inch iMac with the i7 but if I decide to go portable (which was always my intention) and Apple don't get their act together, I'm getting a Envy or Vaio.

Here's to hoping for good news soon..

Thanks for responding -
Are batteries a pain with a MBP? How long do they last?
Do people get a spare when they buy an MBP?
And, are there "extras" that people usually buy when they
get a MBP? (ie, external hard drive).
Just want to make sure I budget accordingly.
Thanks

Logic Studio. And on a laptop, particularly Mainstage.

--- I hope you can hold out! Mac's system is soooooo much
easier than PCs!

We will have the mbp's update at wwdc, like the mac pro and display cinema.

We have wait 102~106 days. :(:(:(

1st Timer

The new MBP will be my first Mac computer. I already purchased the 1TB time capsule. Is there any other hardware/software purchases you guys would consider a "must have?"

Holding out...

My first post, but I've been a lurker for awhile.

It's time for a new laptop and I REALLY want to buy a Mac, because frankly I need a break from windows. And yea I think they're pretty! :D But at the same time I'm looking at these DELLS and other laptops that already have the i7 chips in them. Of course if I'm going to get a new laptop I want the latest and greatest. I've heard good things about windows 7, but I've always wanted a Mac and now that I have the opportunity to get one they are making it hard for me to decide by taking forever to update. Don't know how much longer I can hold out...

What would you guys do in my spot?
