so.. is $2299 the new price for a 17"?

I have a feeling that they are dropping the 13" mbp..
and going back to the days of the ibook/powerbook where they had 12,14" ibooks and 15,17" powerbooks.
except now it's just 13" macbook or 15, 17" macbook pro... with the macbook air in between

The MC207LL/A has been at $799 at MicroCenter for almost 4 months now.....where have you been?

I don't know of these sites. I'm just posting the full image that was on the front page. Other blogs said it was dropping to $799.

Anyways, point still stands if it's $799.

I find it slightly funny to be reading so many posts stating "if this, then I won't be buying..."

Apple will not suffer because of your lack of business. They seem have a pretty good idea on how to sell their merchandise!

Sidenote...this is really exciting that it seems to really be coming SOON. I'll have my cash in hand on Tuesday, but will gladly wait another two weeks if needed!vv;)

it uses H.264 super compression

Blu-ray utilizes VC-1, not H.264

a DVD player usually has a 1080p upscaler anyway!

Pixels cannot be created nor destroyed. Upscaling DVD players only apply special filters to make the image look better. Also, the quality between an upscaled DVD vs a Blu-ray disc is like night and day. 7 Gb of artificially upscaled ancient MPEG-2 vs 50 Gb of native high-efficiency VC-1 makes quite the difference on-screen.

The 13" had better have an i5 and 330m, or there'll be no purchase.

But if such a config exists, yet costs $500 more than competitors out there (such models are currently selling for $1000 or less), then it's still PC for me. Windows 7 is "good enough" when you're talking about $500.

At least $400-$500 is the "apple tax" that we're used to seeing. With the current state of things, the artificial price inflation on the high end is well over $1000. I don't care how good the quality is, when I can buy 2 comparable or better computers for the price of a single mac, I know there's something wrong.

People realiZe that the 13 inch MacBook pro is their bestselling laptop right? They're not going to discontinue a good thing. The only logical gap I can imagine is of they replace 13 inch MBP with a redesigned lower prices MacBook air and a MacBook pro air can stand at the current 1799 price point but that's farfetchd.

Anyway I know this is a mac site but who are we kidding here? Windows 7 is a great OS. All you be trolling

Nice, they're lowering the price on the high-end 15" by $100 and the 17" by $200. The low-end 15" is going up $100 but I'm thinking that they might add a dedicated GPU to that one as well and having that be the extra $100.

I really hope that list is incomplete because Microcenter sells Mac Pros. But I suspect new Mac Pros will unfortunately wait until May or June :(

Yeah, I believe it when I actually see it!

Also, why are these prices so high? The new Mac Pros (IF there are any that is) should be around $5,300 according to your pricing of the laptops here.

That's just too high for this economy.

We don't even know what these prices signify. Relax.

Exactly. The bump might be to cover the cost of B..b.b.b.b BLURAY? Or Ss.ss.s.s.s SSD standard (in a small partition size for OS X and apps)?

Seriously, a price bump is a really good thing in my estimation. It is rare that Apple bumps the prices as it's always hard to go up in pricing. I have to believe they mean Apple has added some value to the equation.

Just go ahead and get a PC now, no one is holding their breath for your decision.

And so does my wife. She uses it often.

But - going to a 15" - him - might be a bit too big. I have an SSD - and won't have another MBP without one. The 17" is way to big - it would totally freak my wife out.

15" thoughts?

Tommy

JMO, but I think 15" is the PERFECT laptop size. My wife uses two 13" macs and still prefer the 15" 90+% of the time. While the 15" is just slightly bigger feeling than the 13", it but packs a much bigger display.

Unless you are hurting for $'s I'd say just go with the 15".

Again, JMO.

I agree with the point you're trying to make, but in all honesty, a price increase is never a good thing. In this case, it's obviously something extra that was required as standard, likely a GPU as others have been saying. The problem here is that Apple is still making a killing on these machines, and instead of eating the slight cost increase, they decided to pass it onto us. The most likely reasoning is that they have very little competition (none if you NEED or want OSX) and they don't have any problem charging a bit more. They could theoretically keep raising prices until they find a sweet spot.

I know this may seem cynical but it's a harsh reality when they have such a dedicated customer base who are willing to pay whatever they ask.

Actually Blu-ray supports multiple encodings: "MPEG-2, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, and VC-1" via wikipedia

Right on!
