At least $400-$500 is the "apple tax" that we're used to seeing. With the current state of things, the artificial price inflation on the high end is well over $1000. I don't care how good the quality is, when I can buy 2 comparable or better computers for the price of a single mac, I know there's something wrong.

Apple's High-end anything always has the worst artificial inflation. It's just wrong.

$100 price increase for built in 3G from AT&T

All wireless laptops from Apple will now include access to AT&T 3G data plan.
Built in hardware except for plastic base model. Shipping same day as 3G iPAD will have to activate 3G service through iTunes but is unlocked and uses soft sim technology with virtual PUK code.

You will be able to download virtual sim through itunes and is carrier keyed.

I agree with the point you're trying to make, but in all honesty, a price increase is never a good thing. In this case, it's obviously something extra that was required as standard, likely a GPU as others have been saying. The problem here is that Apple is still making a killing on these machines, and instead of eating the slight cost increase, they decided to pass it onto us. The most likely reasoning is that they have very little competition (none if you NEED or want OSX) and they don't have any problem charging a bit more. They could theoretically keep raising prices until they find a sweet spot.

I know this may seem cynical but it's a harsh reality when they have such a dedicated customer base who are willing to pay whatever they ask.

I certainly agree...while the price increase is likely a good sign in the sense that it means something good is coming, it doesn't help them retain some customers that may be swayed by price. I personally was set on the 15" MB471LL/A, 2.53GHz and will be getting the comparable MBP that comes regardless. I'm excited!

Where did you find (create?) this gem?

Oh, and just because they're announced (hypothetically) this week, that doesn't mean "we'll be enjoying them soon." Apple has, in the past, announced something and then followed with, "...and we'll be taking orders in a month."

So everyone just keep breathing. :)

At least at that point you know exactly what's coming.

Fact, guess? Seem pretty confident?

I know that the people on here say that apple doesn't care about one person's opinion (the people who say a price increase is a deal-breaker), but that one person probably represents the thoughts of 2-5 people who don't actually post. Just saying, Apple needs to be careful. Prices might not be too high yet, but if the trend continues Apple will lose its college/high school student market. We're about to owe thousands of dollars to a university, we can't afford price gouging from Apple too.

$1799 for a laptop. they better put in some nice features and options.

too rich for me. at these prices i might as well buy a Mini and 2 iPads

I guess that explains why the 8 core Mac Pro is so much more expensive than an 8 core Xeon system from other vendors.

Or why the iPad is so much more expensive than other slate/tablet products like the HP slate.

Oh, wait........

if this is true and they are announced on tuesday when would they start shipping? im in new zealand and cant wait to get my hands on one.:D

The long delays are almost always when Apple introduces something entirely new (iPad, iPhone, etc). Most commonly for simple CPU upgrades, there is a relatively short delay (sometimes 'shipping today') between announcements and shipping.

I find it slightly funny to be reading so many posts stating "if this, then I won't be buying..."

Usually, these comments come from people who would never buy a Mac, anyway - as in "if it doesn't come with a fusion power plant and fit into my pocket while offering a 24" screen, I won't buy it".

JMO, but I think 15" is the PERFECT laptop size. My wife uses two 13" macs and still prefer the 15" 90+% of the time. While the 15" is just slightly bigger feeling than the 13", it but packs a much bigger display.

Well, I would say the 'perfect' size depends a great deal on the person. I happen to like my 17" MBP. I considered going down to a 15" but decided the savings weren't worth it FOR ME. I know others who are quite happy with 13" screens.

Do we think that apple will include usb3 ports on these things?

Not likely - since Intel chip sets don't support it yet.

Hmm... If the 17" gets a quad-core and an AMD 5xxx series GPU, I might be tempted to get one. Been dying for a higher resolution display for my laptop. BUT, I wonder if I can still edit pictures in the car with its bigger size :D.

Honestly for me, if there isn't a quad in the 17", I won't see the reason to spend the green.

It's unlikely to be a quad core - rather it's almost certain to be an i7 which (in the mobile format) offers 2 cores plus hyperthreading resulting in 4 virtual cores. I would have liked to have a true quad core MacBook Pro, but it's not likely to happen until Intel offers a mobile quad core chip.

Sounds almost believable

I was thinking the same thing. Apples stuck with C2D/9400, i just cant see them going i3/GMA
nVidia took its lumps with the G84/86 notebook GPU fiasco. The MCP79A was a great product for its time and manages to hold its own. The problem is that Apple gets backed into the same corner that nVidia is in since nVidia can't make chipsets beyond the front side bus.

ATI is giving them a beating across desktop and mobile lines for discrete solutions as well. Anyone that depends on ION bet on the wrong horse.

Only if Apple has stockpiled the C2D CPUs.... Intel shuts old techology lines down after the new lines are ramped up.

C2D isn't even listed on the Intel processors web page anymore (http://www.intel.com/products/processor/index.htm). There's a link near the bottom for View previous-generation laptop products.
Apple does seem to ride down Intel's EOL dates to the wire.

Dear Apple,

Premium computers at premium prices are fine with me, but please make your MBP HD capacities equivalent to your non-premium competitors.

Thank you.
The drive sizes have been depressing over the years. (Remember the iBook? *shudders*) I guess they pick up the last bulk batch of the lowest capacity drives and sell them out. I've had 320 GB since 2007. The Macbook stands out against the base 13" MacBook Pro in hard drive capacity still.

Does anyone else get an unsettling feeling from the new unibody aluminium notebooks? Maybe it's the drive vibrations that I encounter every demo model I stumble upon. Maybe it's something with the metal itself but it feels like touching a chalk board. I get goosebumps thinking about it. The plastic MacBook is a joy to touch though. I like the rubberized base as well.

Typically, Apple ships when it announces new product.

There are rare exceptions like the iPhone and iPad that ship a bit later, but that generally isn't the case with their computers. Infrequently, one model (usually the top-of-the-line one) will have a delayed ship date by a few days or a couple of weeks.

Unsurprisingly, as delayed shipping of the new product would only cause the current product line sales to stagnate. Apple has very little interest in announcing new product without being able to ship it. They cannibalize their own sales by announcing product that they can't ship in quantity.

They want you to buy stuff that's on the store shelves *NOW*.

So do I. I am AAPL shareholder, I want you to buy whatever Apple's selling NOW, not what they might be selling next week/month/quarter/year.

i was thinking about buying the 13" wen the new line up comes in this year but i don't remember if mac updates processors a second time in the same year  because i buy my mac and last a long time with that sucker so my theory is, buy the best one and beat the hell out of it.

I thought the Macbook Pro was always considered the high end laptops targeting professionals.... The Macbooks are always there for the students.

I don't know many real "professionals" who need professional-grade computers who would use the MacBook Pro. Especially in certain varieties like a 13"/15" without dedicated GPU, a Pro without even an ExpressCard slot, and a display without a great high resolution option... there are more reasons, but there's a good start.
