If you want an introduction to development, start playing with XCode, then decide later if you can benefit from ADC. Access the store through here, clicking on United States, or whatever, then on "Hardware Purchase Program Store" under "Ordering Information."

http://developer.apple.com/membership/hardware.html

@DavidCar: Thanks for the info. The issue is, however, that my main reason for purchasing an ADC membership would be for the hardware discount. I see the other components (i.e., development tools) of ADC as a secondary benefit. So, I would like to know before paying for ADC whether or not it is worth it from a discount standpoint. The link you posted seems to want me to log in with an ADC account before viewing hardware prices, which puts me in a bit of a catch-22 (don't want to buy ADC unless it provides worthwhile discounts, but can't see the discounts w/out ADC). Though if it's true that you receive new versions of OS X as part of it, that makes it worth the price! (Although, I assume when you renew yearly, if you are no longer a student you no longer get the $99 price.)

Other users have mentioned ~$500 discount on MBPs. However, this could change once the new MBP is released. So, I could just wait until they are released and ask somebody with an ADC account what the prices are. But I'm from Missouri (the Show-Me State), which means that I like to see things for myself...

I guess this is a bit off-topic, but it is (for me, personally) directly related to the purchase of a new MBP, which I will do as soon as the new ones are released...

Edit: I'm an idiot. You can see the Developer's store without logging in. Sorry! DavidCar: Thanks again for the link! That's great!

No the student membership is $99 and you do get the $500 off the macbook pro.
and i have no idea about free os releases can someone confirm this on the student membership for me?

From Apple's Student Dev Page:
"The ADC Student Membership does NOT include code-level technical support, access to pre-release software, or use of the ADC Compatibility Labs and students may not be transferred these benefits by others. If your development requires such benefits, then the ADC Select Membership may better suit your needs."
I'm guessing that's a no on free OS releases but I could find no verification of this one way or the other, so, literally, I am guessing here! Select and Premier members do get the latest version of OS X shipped on release.

that is an awesome bag. that is what i'm going to carry my new merom macbook pro in.

I have the ORIGINAL Brenthaven 17" powerbook bag (the one custom fit for the 1GHZ 17" G4 Powerbook) and I still use it now 4 years later! Hasn't broken down, still in excellent condition, and holds EVERYTHING I need and keeps it protected! If/when I get a new macbook pro, I'm thinking of upgrading my bag as well...I like the extra "protection" features, even though the bag I have right now is AWESOME! Brenthaven makes great bags!

God! Get it! The X1600 is not underclocked dammit!:p

They run at same speed as any other X1600 in PCs.

The MBP X1600 is underclocked by a considerable amount.

I don't believe in nVidia cards for portables. Yes, the 12" PB has GeForce Go5200, but still, the MBP has to reamin 1" thin.;)

The Go 7900 has a TDP just over 10% higher than the X1600. The 7700 is on a samller process than the 7900, has lower clocks and fewer pipes. I deduce it's likely that the 7700 has a lower TDP than the X1600 -- yet the 7700 is considerably faster. What's not to like?

It's probably all moot anyway, since I suspect this refresh may well be just a CPU swap... I hope it isn't, but I suspect that's all it'll be.

I think a redesign is more likely for Santa Rosa...

I just hope that they will come out with one that is compatible with at least
4gb of ram

If the rumors about it being just a CPU swap, then your hopes will be dashed, I'm afraid...

How will it be able to support > 4GB of ram? It is still a 32 bit chipset, just like in the iMacs :(

argh... the suspense is killing me...
doubt i will be able to get any work done tomorrow, probably going to spend the entire day refreshing the apple.com website...

has anyone thought that the true video ipod could also be the photographers sidekick? it could be an apaturepod and download move and photos. allowing for fast mobil transfer, or as the interface for external storage. or yeah it could play from the drive that would be cool.

hahah

i was thinking the same thing. i have a class tomorrow first thing in the morning and i am making sure i don't take my old (and in desperate need of being replaced) iBook G4 with me so i'm not doing that in class. but i'll prolly rush back after to check...i'm just hoping for something pleasant once i hit that refresh button.

I didn't say it would -- I said his hopes would be dashed, ie that he wouldn't get what he wanted.

The 2GB limit of the MBP and 3GB limit of the new iMacs are entirely down to Apple's design, they could support 4GB.

Said systems can still run in Long (64bit) mode tho' -- it's fully functional.

1.) What does everyone mean when they say buy via a campus network? Is this different from going to the Apple Store for Education and selecting your university from the list?

I believe they mean buying directly from the campus Apple store/reps. At least for my campus, we have an online webstore that sells Apple hardware & software at Education (or below) rates.

Aka, your school may have some pre-configured Apple machines that they sell for a lower price than the online Edu store.

Also be aware that it could take a few days, even a week or so to be approved for Student ADC status. You need to fax them your (unofficial) transcript, or something that shows you're taking development-related courses. (Aka prove you're going to actually use the machine to do development on)

Eh that is not true, you don't need to be doing development at all, just need to be a full time student.

In the UK at least, there are two links/portals for online education purchases http://store.apple.com/Catalog/uk/Images/routingpage.html (or see attached screenshot) one of which states "You can only access the above link from your Institution's network"

According to aly & Slakerr the Institution network route gets you an additional discount + free applecare (& also aly sez you get "free pickup for £54" but I don't understand what that means  )

My one concern (other than everything else I should be working on instead of doing this ;-) is that I already bought an entry level Macbook for my mother in law using the individual link, and I have a horrible feeling that I read somewhere on this site that you get one discount a year... if this means that I have lost my chance to get double dicount and free applecare on a 17" MBP for the sake of a measly £50 in my wife's mother's pocket I will be

Is it just for me that Order Status doesn't work. I'm in Sweden. Hope that it means something :)

//adamsen87

Edit: Seems to be working again

Well...
Track order seems to be working again................................

Anyone with estimate ship for 20 Sept get shipping notifications? They are known to ship 1 day in advance of that some of the time.

I'm thinking that AppleInsider is playing it safe by not predicting when these MacBook & MacBook Pros will ship. I still think tomorrow is likely if not next Monday at that press event. Remember how Apple used the opening expo day at NAB to launch the 17" CD MPB in April? Could be the same deal next week in Germany if it isn't tomorrow.

Now holding out for Photokina. I was predicting today, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

To just add further to perhaps this futile (but fun) exercise:

I feel if there are updates scheduled - they may be before photokina. Perhaps Tuesday or Wednesday of this week? As photokina isn't an Apple event, it does seem somewhat ... unkind (probably not the right word there) but ... it doesn't seem right to overshadow or hijack the event by stealing the limelight with hardware upgrades.

Would be nice to get a revB of something which would signal more maturity and stability in the portable range.

I just don't know how long to wait. I'm purchasing a 17' MBP, and don't want to have a newer revision come out the next day.

IMO, just get what you need/want when you need/want it. If you can wait, then do and see what happens. I would at least wait until Photokina next week.

tis tues and... (the order was placed Sat. 16th, first was to ship on the 19th. shipped a day early) how are some being pushed far back and mine ship's? edu discount?

Bummer • Photokina Event In San Francisco Must Be The Moment

Oh well... We tried. ;) Photokina Press Event must be the day. Still haven't nailed down the exact hour when it happens in San Francisco.

I guess they are still cranking up production so more will be for sale when Marketing pulls the trigger.
