So it is definitely worth waiting for a c2d-based machine if you can.

Nah, they update minor store products all the time without bringing the store down. They only seem to have to take the store down if they are changing the laptops or desktops. I've never seen the store down for JUST a software update.

FWIW, none of the changes associated with this event have gone up on Apple's stores (i.e. Aperture is still listed at v1.1), so there's still time to update the whole thing with laptops. Apologies for the frazzled logic, but it made me a little more optimistic again!
