Monday Morning April 24, 2006 when the NAB Expo opened and they introduced the current 17" CD MacBook Pro.

That was a Monday then. Cool. But what I'm getting at is that it isn't the "normal" method of operation.

Thanks for the info though. ;)

I don't care about black, but a magnetic latch would be ideal (and I happen to love the Macbook keyboard).

I agree, nearly bought a MB for that very reason. The MBP keyboard almost looks cheap by comparison (imo).

Well, I think that would be the most disappointing thing of all then. To wait this long for a Merom update without a case redesign would be kind of a waste. I guess if the internals are different, it'd be okay, but the current design is 3 years old.

Oh, absolutely. I'm dissapointed that Apple is this far behind with shipping or even simply announcing C2D Macbook Pros. A ton of us are in this waiting game simply because if new processors are coming out for rival manufactors, then Apple should be releasing them soon. No one wants to buy a computer to have it replaced the next week (or the next...or the next...or during this upcoming event...or maybe next week). It's just a shame that the process is taking so long. If I knew for sure that they wouldn't be out until November, I would just buy a Yonah MBP. That's just how Apple is. We'll never know for sure until the minute the Apple page has it in a little box on the front page.

Let the rioting begin :)

No Merom MBP at Photokinkia, shall we wait until Tuesday before the mass rioting/mob hysteria commences? Mass suicides to follow the Tues next week if there are no Merom MBP's announced:D

Ok you guys. Some info from the inside. Those who are waiting for an upgrade. It was not today,it will not be tomorrow,it will not be october.
It will be november. The termal issues where one of the reasons to do a major rework on the design. So if you want a c2d now.Get another brand.

I don't buy it. Not for that particular reason. They've been able to drop chips in their next release since they got the test lot Intel handed out in June. Now 3, coming close to 4 months later, you want to tell me that their engineers haven't figured out the problem and how to fix it? If it were another manufacturer, it would hold more weight, but Apple is known for hiring the best there is to do the job right. That's part of the price tag in an Apple purchase. It's worth the extra money for the improved quality.

If there's someone who needs it now, there isn't a thing wrong with the current MBP. It's a great machine, and one that someone shouldn't feel any problem with owning. I wouldn't if I bought one today. It's not like were talking that the current MBP is a PII and the update when it happens would be a 3GHz Xeon. It won't be THAT drastic of a difference. If someone is set that they have to have (or need) a C2D, then they will have to resolve within themselves that it might be a day, or it might be 30 days. If they really want it, they'll wait. If not, they'll be happy with the current one.

O'Grady impression:

Wait, I feel it... Apple will release a new completely fiber optic machine between now and 2015.

Well, they have been working on that ultraslim 12" for quite some time now. Thermal problems delaying the release for a few months doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility.

From the inside of what, your imagination? I hate when people claim to be insiders and quote stuff like this. YOU KNOW NOTHING.

Sure, I'll go rioting! I have a few spare bricks I found on the side of the road... one of which happens to be that hideously old case MBP case! :D

Eh, the redesign to solve the thermal issue might be a delay causation, and if so, the wait will be worth it, I suppose.

yeah I can agree with that :D but it does seem long if you need one for school ;)

I actually need several for this traveling "circus" I'm putting together for next year. Ok, not literally a circus, but in all seriousness a traveling deal that will kick off shortly after the first of the year. That being said, hopefully the delivery time won't be too stout when they finally do come through. If it comes down to it, so be it. There wouldn't be any problem with the current version. At least everything else can be snatched up before then to occupy my time. :D

And yes, it always seems like a long time when you're anxious for a new "toy". Just remember those that held the wait for a PB update that never showed. However, the issues that couldn't be overcome in time for those is far from the issues of going from a CD to a C2D. If it takes much longer, it's not an engineering problem. It's either a supply & demand issue, or a marketing ploy.

Hey slow down there buddy. Photokina hasn't even started yet. It's doesn't start until tomorrow Tuesday. So hold the phone and stop jumping to conclusions. This waiting game is not over until tomorrow.

1. Today is Aperture 1.5 day.
2. Tomorrow is MacBook Pro C2D day.

Where's the fire? :)

Well, the good news is (for those who care about such things), you'll probably be able to purchase a MBP long before a Playstation 3.

I'm disappointed like the rest of you...

The merom MBP will either be very soon (tomorrow?) or not until November.

My logic is that, in principle this is a drop-in replacement part that will improve the competitiveness of Apple's flagship laptop, so if it can be done quickly it will be. If Apple had announced the new C2D MBP today, or if they release it in the next few days (e.g. at the intel thing), that will position the MBP right along with current C2D machines from other OEMs, some of which haven't yet released C2D machines yet either (Lenovo). This scenario would be a simple chip replacement in the current MBP, and I'd buy one without hesitation.

However, as we're all well aware, if they don't update the MBP to merom very soon, it'll be anticlimactic to do as a simple chip upgrade. So if we don't see the C2D MBP within a week, I don't think we'll see it in the current design at all.

This would lead to my second scenario, which is a completely redesigned MBP with whatever the top of the line C2D CPUs are, to be released in time for the holiday season, sometime early in November.

I'm lucky that I can live with my current 1.67 GHz G4 Albook until then if I have to, so the second scenario isn't unbearable to me. That being said, I've had the cash in hand to buy a new laptop since July, and I've been waiting for a C2D-based machine since then, so this is getting tedious.

Cheers

I sincerely doubt we will see a C2D MBP tomorrow. There's always a possibility but I don't see it happening.

Although, the Webcast from the last event is overdue to be taken off. Here's hoping to that box being replaced with a Merom update.

That's ludicrous. Why would you hold a media event and then release an unannounced product the next day? There is no precedent for this. Logically that just makes no sense, as it would be easy to make a quick two second mention of the update in the Aperature event...

They did it with the current CD MBP, they did it with the current mini and they did it with the current C2D iMac. Isn't that enough precedents for you? Or is your memory completely wasted?

Well that was not friendly.I am using a false name(of course) and all I am telling you is the truth. If you can't take it,sorry for that, but of course go ahead buy a c2d chip get your tools and create your own merom macbook. So you can tell everyone you have one.

So, what's the next possible / probable for an update?

Yes, when is the next likely time for these to be updated? Silent update in 1-3 weeks (makes me sick thinking about waiting more...) or an upcoming event?

That's a 12" though, or even a 13". Nobody knows for certain yet. Still goes without saying though that they didn't have C2D chips in hand to pop into their prototype's until June. I don't recall it being a consideration for them to drop a CD into that small of a Pro. But, I suppose they could have used one for initial testing. However, it would be logical to assume their focus would be on getting what they have updated and then adding to it.

Something like the iMac up to a 24" is different for example, as there was more room to work with than the other models, so they had a good bet it would fly.

Wasn't the iMac and mini before the Showtime event? It makes more sense that way. Having the event and releasing the day after doesn't make any sense to me.

scenemist

whats the time frame for the next CPU that is coming out? March? If Apple waits long enough it'll be a few months before the next chip is out. maybe C2D macbook pro's will become the new G5 PBs
