It's a Tuesday and a week before the Educause In Dallas

Apple usually likes to have their new stuff out in time for these higher education conventions.Which Apple is attending with a 40'X30' booth.Next to a storage room by the elevator as usual..hehe.

That and a wild guess/gut instinct :D

Its amazing the amount of grasping for straws everyone does here :O

What's so great about the current crop of Macs? That's fanboist thinking!

Let's start with the MBP.

1) ancient 3 year old design

Yes it is an old design, however Apple has said it themselves that the transition to intel is to be as seemless as possible. One reason for keeping the same design, was to keep the image that just because the insides are changing, dosen't mean that Apple has to change it's industrial design.

On a seperate note, the IBM hadn't really changed the industrial design of it's Thinkpad (a laptop you so highly praise, and not just in this thread) since the before Pentium II era.

again a pentium II Thinkpad

lenovo-t60.jpg

CURRENT T60 LENOVO

lenovo-ibm-thinkpad-t60.jpg

Again current Lenovo T60

With the exception of the intipoint mouse as opposed to a trackpad, and some minor bezel changes, the industrial design looks about the same as the most recent IBM Thinkpad or almost any current Lenovo product.

2) Functionality over form... NOT.
-overheating.. why? Cos Ives didn't want to mar the clean look with a vent!
-ever thought of doing your own HD upgrade? Woah
-ding and scratch magnet
-see point above, hope you don't fly lest the TSA officers touch it
-probably nice in John Lennon's "white room", but 100% purely impractical in the real world.

Didn't you just get done complimenting the MBP on how well the keyboard felt, and how much you liked it (again referencing the Thinkpad)? Having a good and easy to use keyboard must not be a part of functionality then!

Great point on the heat issue! However it is not unique to Apple, they just got more press regarding it.

Dings and scratches? Welcome to owning a portable electronic device. My HP and IBM laptop have about as much damage as my current iBook.

3) For a bit over half the price, what can you get with PC laptops? C2D, discrete graphics (ok not great, but the MBP's is not GREAT either!), bigger hard drive, better case! What are you getting from a MBP that makes it stand out from the crowd? As in "stand out 100% price premium" from the crowd? Apart from the white Apple logo at the back of it, nothing.

Fair enough, and valid point!

Please go buy a PC based laptop, and tell us how it is.

Funny how Apple is so innovative yet they can't churn out problem-free hardware. This is not software we talking, it is hardware. Perhaps they are so innovative that even their hardware designs are... bugged? Oh hang on, that doesn't make sense, it is more like someone on their design teams fails math and can't even do simple calculations to ensure components get to disscipate heat properly.

Please show us a company that "churns out™" problem free hardware. Don't be suprised however if someone on here points out a laundry list of problems with that hardware, just like you have for the MBP.

No laptop, computer, or piece of technology is perfect. All of it has been designed, built, and shipped by humans. Humans make mistakes!

Patience Is A Virtue • No Need For Panic In Any Event • Apple Is Doing Their Best

You have always been the voice of reason and intelligence here. thank you for that. I choose to believe you about tomorrow morning. It's more fun being an optimist anyway. I'm buying a MBP for my daughter tomorrow morning.
Thank you for those kind words. But I'm not predicting it will be tomorrow. I'm simply saying there is no reason for panic before the Photokina show even opens. If it doesn't happen tomorrow, there is also no reason to panic. I am sure Apple has good reasons for any further delay. Good things come to those who wait.

I would not buy a MBP for my daughter tomorrow if it isn't C2D. I would give her a card pledging to give her the C2D MBP ASAP. She may temporarily express disappointment and even perhaps anger toward you, although I would caution her those are not mentally healthy emotions to practice, but she will thank you more in the long run.

It would be wonderful if all the Apple bashers left the room please. Or at least keep it to yourselves. That kind of negative karma is not necessary nor wanted here. :) Apple is a good company with many good people helping other good people have a good time. There is no one at Apple who doesn't know what they are doing. They are all infallable human beings just like all of us.

Can anyone explain why they are still building core duo macbook pros

could they build core duos right along side core 2 duos?

not likely is it?

For that information, we will have to wait for and read the book or the magazine article.

My 17" MBP Arrived Today!

My MBP arrived today. I ordered it on Sep 8th and it was supposed to ship on the 15th. Then on the 16th I got a notice saying it was delayed until October 6th. But then it shipped on the 20th and I got it today.

I was waiting for the Core 2 Duo so I can do some 64-bit development but I couldn't wait anymore. I've only had it for a few hours and it's my first Mac ever but I love it.

And for all you still waiting for the C2D, I looked up the serial number and here is my manufacturing info.

Name: MacBook Pro (17 inch)
Model: Mxxxx MacBook Pro 2.16GHz
Bus speed: 667MHz
Screen size: 17 inch
Factory: W8 (Shanghai China)

Model introduced: 2006
Production year: 2006
Production week: 38 (September)
Production number: 562 (within this week)

Hope all you people waiting get what you want soon. As for me, I finally have an awesome laptop.

BTW, after just a few hours, Mac OS X is teh bomb! I've used DOS, Windows since version 3 (even NT 3.51), and various flavors of Linux (Redhat, Mandrake, Slackware, Ubuntu). Mac OS X so far is the easiest to use.

I have been speculating on getting a Macbook Pro for about 3 months now .... but I am seeing that Apple is not keyed to keeping up with the updated Intel chips. Every PC manufacturer seems to be outdistancing Apple on technological updates and that is really a sad thing, seeing as how OSX is such a dynamite OS. Too bad it wont run on a PC thereby making it possible to have a great OS on a platform that can keep up with the tech updates.

Congrats and Welcome To The Macintosh Family Of Enlightenment and Reason

Congratulations and welcome! You are so right. Nothing comes close to the ease of use in OS X.

All Mac Pros & iMacs Are C2D State-Of-The-Art Computers

So you didn't notice C2D Dual Woodcrest Mac Pros and Merom iMacs?

Stuff it

I decided today I would buy the MacBook Pro regardless of the upgrade, I need one for uni, so I went for the 15.4" 2Ghz MBP with 1 Gb RAM.

Shame it will take till 5th October to be Shipped, but does the shipping date state the longest anticipated time, or is it acurate?

Woodcrest Xeons Are Core 2 Server Processors - Same Family As Core 2 Duos

I understand where you're going with this, but MacPros are Xeons, not C2D.
The Woodcrest Xeons in Mac Pros are Core Microarchitecture Server Processors. Same family as Merom and Conroe. Know your Intel Core Microarchitecture Roadmap.

Laptops
Merom, first Intel eighth-generation notebook chip, 65 nm, dual-core, 2–4 MiB L2 cache (Released on July 27, 2006, shipping now)

Desktops
Conroe, first Intel eighth-generation desktop chip, 65 nm, dual-core, 4 MiB L2 cache (Released on July 27, 2006, shipping now)
Allendale, 65 nm, dual-core, cut-down Conroe with 2 MiB L2 (Released on July 27, 2006, shipping now)

Servers and workstations
Woodcrest, first Intel eighth-generation server and workstation chip, 65 nm, dual-core, 4 MiB L2 cache (Released on June 26, 2006)

In my post I was agreeing with you...insofar as you were correcting the person you quoted for saying that Apple was behind the times in getting out C2D-equipped machines. That's where I was insinuating you were going. If I somehow offended you with this, sorry.

mbp c2d comes 14 days after the ipod deal ended??

personal thoughts.. i think mbp c2d will be updated at least 14 days after the ipod deal ended.. last month apple sold a lot of notebooks in the US, coz lots of people want to take adavantage of the deal... but remember the 14 days return policy? if apple updates mbp with c2d this week, there is gonna be heaps of bastard returning their old mbp, without needing to return the ipod that they got from the deal... so, i guess it's gonna be someday next week, not this week... but anywayzzz, personal thoughts...

as much as i would love to see the c2dmbp announced soon, with mbps with c2d still being built as of a week or two ago, i dont see it happening anytime soon

My bad. Please forgive me. Corrected my post.

That makes a lot of sense.

So, would someone just remind me one more time? If I go ahead and buy the MBP before the upgrade to C2D, what will I regret in the future? How long will it be before 64-bit is the ONLY option? Will it be months? Or years? How long will the current MBP be sufficient? And what about the Leopard OS? Will it only work on 64-bit? I need to make a decision asap, but this message board really has me worried.

the full transition to 64-bit applications won't be for a few years.. and yes, Leopard will work on 32-bit machines

Puzzled by the madness

Those who are in this forum are here because we are interested in Apple and its offerings and particulary this thread for the upcoming MB updates. For those who want to play 'Apple bashing', you should really find somewhere else to release your Windows blue screen driven frustration.

The only thing that is important here is that we are anticipating an upgrade and are interested in all things pertaining to its release.

As for me, I have cash in hand and ready to buy the top end MBP so come on Apple Marketing Team...pull the trigger...C2D....its Launch time...

Actually the 3 processors (Merom, Conroe, and Woodcrest) are built upon the Intel Core Microarchitecture. However, the Woodcrest product forms the Xeon 5100 series (as referred to the links above) and is not a Core 2. The Merom and Conroe based processors are labeled as Core 2. Therefore I don't know how you got the name C2D MacPros cuz only Conroe/Meroms are.
