There was nothing wrong with this design per sé. The butterfly keyboard & Touch Bar soured many people to it though. If Apple renovated this design by replacing the Touch Bar with regular function keys, upgraded the webcam to 1080p, and added MagSafe that would be a solid start.

OMG so brilliant! And they could make it even smaller and thinner, and call it... wait for it... a "Macbook Air"!

You're a genius!

🎯 💯

Make a thicker version of the MacBook Air to accommodate a fan & HDMI & SD card reader. That would be such an improvement.

Yes! They could call that one the MacBook Pro! You're really on a roll today!

Clever post but you missed the point of the 13" MacBook Pro still existing... at least why Apple claims it's still in the line-up... Active cooling. That seems to be the differentiator between consumers & pros in Apple's world 🤔

Only reason to get a 13" Pro is that it is the cheapest Apple laptop capable of drive multiple external screens, since Apple has dumbed down the Air, so it cannot. Multiple external monitor support is the only reason I am looking into getting a Pro, since my Air has all I need...... Apart from multiple monitor support.

I think before ditching the Touch Bar. Apple needs to consider ditching the notch on MacBooks. It honestly serves no purpose. Not even Face ID. At least, Touch Bar is semi-functional.

In addition, we are also getting 13" iPad Pro models next year tho.

There is no way I am ever buying any screen with a notch. Ever. Period. Don’t have one, won’t have one. I said it then, I say it now. It is the stupidest kludge, for the most non existent problem, ever. Ever.

I guess I wouldn't say the problem is non-existent.

I think Apple was trying to solve the problem of having FaceID but without making the thickness of the top lid any thicker. I believe there were articles describing how if the lid were thicker, it could accommodate the necessary hardware features needed for FaceID without the notch.

The notch is one solution to not having a thicker lid while also enabling FaceID. I think for now, it's a solution that works. I imagine that as technology and components advance, maybe a thicker lid isn't necessary and the FaceID camera can be accommodates in just a thin bezel (thin both in width and depth).

Wrong, the 13" MBP can only drive one external monitor.

Base M1 and M2 chips can drive two displays. In the mini, that's two externals. In the laptops, that's one external plus one built-in.

Of course, you can use DisplayLink, but that'll work with the Air as well.

You are deeply confused.

There is no FaceID in any MacBook. The notch doesn't help because the basic issue is that the lid is too thin for FaceID tech, at least so far. It's for accommodating a regular camera.

The notch allows you to push the screen edges very close to the edge of the lid, except in the camera area, eliminating a dead zone at the top of the display. It's a good solution.

Ah, if it's not FaceID then I think it was something about a higher resolution camera or some such? I can't remember. Or perhaps it was for thinner bezels.

Edit: anyhow, this made me do a little digging because I recall various stories about the notch. Here is one explanation from Apple Explained.

Anyhow, I can't say the notch has bothered me. I don't own a Mac with a notch, but I have been to an Apple Store over the past three years and have played around with notched Macs. Doesn't bother me one bit.

Wouldn't suprise me, given that Amazon were offering the latest MBP at upto 20% discount in the UK a few weeks ago. Usually Apple products in the UK barely get a discount even when several years old, so such massive offers on a product less than 6 months old is unheard of.

Strongly disagree, they should not consider ditching it. They added a strip of display that is just large enough for the menu bar. It can now be always visible without taking up any screen real estate. And if you switch it to always black then the notch effectively disappears.

[x] You have not understood "my logic."

I was arguing against "next generation" being reduced to only design.
You missed my post that said there was nothing wrong with the design per sé. It needs some updates (MagSafe, 1080 FaceTime cam, and replace the TouchBar with function keys). Apple still has this product in the line-up to fill an important niche.

If m3 max destroys M1 Max and at a reasonable price, I shall upgrade. Otherwise I’m riding out the M1 Max.

Apple silicon is excellent. In my opinion, the chips are now so performant and efficient for the masses that they are in diminishing returns for the level of investment necessary to achieve the requisite performance needed by the average user.

M1 / Pro / Max are more than enough for the vast majority of users who aren’t doing super intensive GPU or CPU tasks. Apple’s biggest competition is now it’s predecessor chips. Why pay the apple tax ( $$$ ) on m2 max or m3 max when M1 Max is more than enough ?
Cough cough how expensive is a m1 max device ?

Agreed.

I have a 13" M1 Pro NotchMacBook Pro (for my work) and privately I use a 15" 2019 Intel MacBook Pro (yes.. Touch Bar..) for my "portable Mac needs"...

Of course we all love the speed, no noise, cool temp and long battery life of the M-series MacBooks, but... it soooo does look a 10 year older design than the o-so sleek 15" Intel based MBP.
And that notch.... I am almost ashamed of it. I cannot get used to it. I'm sorry.

I also have iPhone 14 Pro.. with the "Dynamic Island", which is Apple's way of admitting they also hate the notch but tried to find a cute solution to it needing that space.... Which it is not.
I love my iPhone, for sure. And got used to it (as I use no other Phone), but OMG am I waiting for a notch-less / island-free design.
