I’m suspecting Apple is still somehow recouping the cost of 2016 design and will likely keep manufacturing it with revs of the M series until cost of the 14 inch comes down to make that an entry level successor. Either that or they just had a pile of that 13 inch chassis in inventory and are trying to deplete it. I don’t buy the argument anymore it’s for businesses that need the thermal features. We have 13 inch MBPs in the office and we hardly push them and most who I see with them are using web apps.
Some people like the touch bar and I am one of them.

The 13" MBP is stupid and I hate it and I don't understand why it exists and I want it to die.

There, I said it. Now I feel better.

I kinda feel that way too. 😅 I think it's partially OCD on my part, as I wish the Mac lineup were cleaner, and this is such an underwhelming device to introduce what is supposed to be the greatest leap in Apple Silicon yet. Though I guess there's a sense of "get the boring stuff out of the way first", which is effectively what they did with M1.

Dynamic Island on the macbook pro is so lame, I don't need tiny apps on the top center of my screen, until they can't remove the notch completely I prefer the notch over dynamic island on a macbook pro, on the iphone is another story.

Also I don't want a piece of screen between around the island, I prefer the notch comes from the top to bottom, no screen space.

Apple sells a shedload of them to corporate/enterprise customers. So even if most consumers pass it by in favor of the less expensive MacBook Air, IT departments buy enough to keep Apple updating it every SoC generation.
But I have a feeling it is a chicken / egg scenario here, I got Apple Business account as well and according to my rep, this 13" is the only model that they have been offering any meaningful bulk discount for the last 2 years. The M2 13" Air in particular got a price increase over the M1 when new, then also got no corporate discounts at all, really swayed the decisions I believe. In other words I don't see IT departments particularly want to stick with the touchbar 13" for any technical reason other than price. It is not like the Pencil situation with iPads.

Wow! I can't believe Macbook 13" is a seven-year-old body design. Having a Touch Bar is so nostalgic! sometimes I do find myself missing it.
Ditto! I loved the TouchBar and miss the dynamic function keys and context-aware settings every day. I think its removal is a rare sign of cowardice by Apple. I think they were simply worn-down by the unrelenting negativity from trolls and non-users.

I know it improved somewhat with the 2023 models, but M1 Max in a 14-inch seems like too much sacrifice in battery life and thermals to be at all sensible. Plus the coolers they had kind of sucked. Similarly, even with improved coolers, the Max chips were clearly more intended for the Mac Studio and 16-inch MacBook Pro first and foremost, with the 14-inch being an afterthought. Had Apple designed for the 14-inch form factor first and foremost (with the added thermal headroom of the Studio and 16-inch being gravy on top), I'd completely agree with you. But the chips being what they are, and I think Max on a 14-inch kind of silly. Plus, we're talking about graphics performance and anything that would actually make use of a Max chip over a Pro chip would be way better to do on a larger display anyway. I'm not convinced that it's a pragmatic combo.
Some folks like me who use MBPs as desktop replacement (DTR) boxes part time and part time mobile in the field prefer the smaller 14" for mobility but still want max power for DTR use driving external display(s). Personally I prefer bigger but 14" with maximum performance works for lots of folks.

oh come on the 13" macbook pro gets the M3 first? No way.

My money is on the imac.

I think the 13" MBP getting M3 first makes sense. Apple likes to make the normal Apple Silicon chips before the "Pro", "Max", and "Ultra" chips. Both the iMac and 13-inch MBP use the normal chip, but the 13-inch MBP might deserve it more for being branded as a "Pro" device. In the past, the 13-inch MBP was also upgraded to the M1 processor before the iMac.

Supposedly there are yield issues with TSMC's 3-nanometer process. I'm guessing 13-inch MBP might be less popular than the iMac, so this may let Apple test out the normal version of the M3 chip without worrying about running out of them.

I’m afraid these are the dying days of the Touch Bar. Most developers aren’t going to support it now that only a few (rare) Macs have it. And having the Touch Bar fairly useless if software doesn’t support it.
Sidecar connected iPads do show the touchbar strip on the screen itself.

And it’s a life saver sometimes, for example, on affinity photo when using a brush without pressure sensitivity, the affinity people decided to put a “force pressure” toggle button in there. That’s besides existing size, hardness, etc sliders.
Each tool has its own set of toggles, options and sliders to display.

I do hope it never goes away 😰

EDIT: oops, people had already commented on this, didn’t read far enough. Excuse me the spam.

I think before ditching the Touch Bar. Apple needs to consider ditching the notch on MacBooks. It honestly serves no purpose. Not even Face ID. At least, Touch Bar is semi-functional.

In addition, we are also getting 13" iPad Pro models next year tho.

That notch is way too big for what it's doing

If I had to guess on their M3 release schedule:

2023 Fall: 24" iMac (M3), **low-end Mac mini (M3), 13" MBP (M3)
2024 Winter/Spring: Mac Book Pros (M3 Pro/Max),Mac mini (M3 Pro), **iPad Pro (M3)
2024 WWDC: Mac Pro (M3 Ultra/Extreme) (this is just wishful thinking, haha)
2024 Summer: Mac Book Airs (M3)
2024 Fall/Winter: Mac Studios (M3 Max/Ultra), new large iMac (M3 Pro/Max), Vision Pro (M3)

**Now that I think about it... I would switch these two around; iPad Pro (M3) this Fall and then the M3 mini released same time with the M3 Pro mini.

You don't seem too far off with that schedule.

It seems more likely that the Mac mini will wait at least until the M3 Pro is also available since its last update came in tandem (M2/M2 Pro).

I'm guessing 13-inch MBP might be less popular than the iMac, so this may let Apple test out the normal version of the M3 chip without worrying about running out of them.

That may well be so. But a MacBook Pro 13" with a new design and an M3 chip would potentially be quite popular. I can imagine it being a high-spec variant of the MacBook Air, rather than a chunky monkey like the current one.

Just 20 minutes ago ordered an M2 MacBook Pro 13" with Touch Bar. Some of us like the design. Wish it had MagSafe, but other than that it looks smart, compared to the uglier design Apple now has on the MacBook Range.

The 2016 to 2020 MacBooks just look amazing.
