Isn't the faster charger just a charger and nothing changes internally on the Mac? Only the brick changes, right? You could pickup those GaN chargers separately.

It should more than meet your needs for what you use if for. Consider what you currently storage us is and make your decision on that, or, bump it up one spec--1tb, if you plan to keep it for 5+/- years. If you use external storage, 512gb might be enough.
For you what you mentioned it will be more than enough!

I'm a software developer and pretty confident 16/512 will be more than enough for me.. My desktop has 32GB RAM and it only went above 16 when I moved my homelab VMs to it which will stay there. Heck, my work laptop has 64GB and I rarely go above 10GB with IDEs.

So, if you want the better charger (96W) instead of the 67W basic charger the „package“ becomes BTO…

My initial delivery dates were nov 5-10. I just got tracking last night and my 16" M1 pro BTO will be here nov 4!!
Decided to go with 10/16/16/1TB. Half of it paid with a trade in and the other half with my work bonus next month.
Yeah I used that Air (128GB/8GB Ram) for software development as well.
Storage didn't bother me, but that 8GB ram was killing me, I had to restart it every few hours or it would get slow.
Currently have a 13" 2020 Pro (Intel) with 16GB and seems enough, but I really want that 14" with its glorious 120Hz display and 24/32-core GPU for occasional gaming.

My 14” BTO finally made it to Memphis, TN via overnight flight FX90 from Japan! Original window Nov 3-5, now showing Oct 29 ? to replace my 2011 13” MBP!
Meanwhile my wife’s 14” BTO Nov 5-10 is still sitting in Shanghai without a new scan for over 24 hours (delivery date disappeared yesterday) and UPS is now estimating Nov 1 for her…

I was able to change my best buy order to pick up today when it was supposed to be shipped the 29th. Can't wait! Also, I see that best buy has multiple mbp in stock for pick up today at least in here in florida.

I think I will join the festivities right at the tail end. Upgraded from an early 2015 13’ to a 16’ pro with mid tier config. Looking foreward to this delivery since I am isolated with COVID . Have nothing better to do but receive the Mac. Ha
The answer is possibly yes, I needed to get a rep from the Apple Card on the phone to take of it manually, but it was instant.
Why not? Technically, you can get a better/faster charger externally since all you need is a USB C charger. (Apple's one is also USB C). You aren't bound to getting the charger from Apple and can even go 3rd party as well as long as it's just the charger thats different and nothing internally on the Mac.
