Ordered 16-inch M1 Max with 64 GB and 2 TB in space gray. Delivery date Nov. 3-5.
Is the base 14" sufficient for typical chrome, web browsing, Youtube, etc? Any benefit in going for the 10 core CPU and/or 32GB RAM?
Yes the base 14" is more than sufficient considering the regular M1 is sufficient for what you described.
A basic MacBook Air can handle what you listed.
Chrome will definitely lag on that machine.
As amusing as that process would be, they offer free shipped returns so it would probably not be worth the effort and cost for them.
The base 14" will have significantly more power than you will need for a long time with that kind of use case.

My friends....these are the ultimate Mac laptops...actually, if it didn't have the notch, then it would've been everything that Apple fans would've wanted in the MacBook Pros...but still, this was a much needed return to form....phew! it only took 6 years and the eviction of a Jony Ive....

Ugh, I’m getting a pretty severe case of fomo. I’m still a student so cannot justify a purchase just yet. Though I will definitely be getting mine before I graduate for that sweet education discount.
I think we might be close enough to the holiday return period as well.

Now, that I’m a little calm now. I tried using the education Apple store but it failed on me twice. I kept getting an error. After that I flashed death in my eyes. Went to the app and ordered two 💻. Thank god I got a launch day delivery.
