I would really like to have USB 3, but I doubt they will implement that. Lightpeek sounds nice, but USB 3 is ten times faster than USB 2, which is a lot in my opinion. Transferring a few gigs of pics will be a matter of a few seconds.

In reality it's a lot longer than a few seconds. Still a lot quicker than USB 2.0 though.

With the previous USB 3.0 drive I had, it would be about 3-5 times quicker.

I have a brand new WD USB 3.0 drive that I've yet to test...

Personally I think the weight is good (and I have a current 17" model), the battery life is good, and the Superdrive is fine. If I was Apple I'd continue to keep the "Pro" line and the priorities of the "Pro" line separate from the white MB's. I agree with many of your assessments for the "White" line, as this is the consumer product. Make it lighter, make the Superdrive external, etc. With the Pro line however, I think the priorities *should* be different. It's unfortunate, IMO, that the Pro machines are more or less considered by most as the upgraded version of the MB, and not their own line targeted to a different set of users, the professional user.

As a Pro user, give me more cores in my processor at the cost of battery life. Give me the standard camera over HD, because the isight camera is really only a "bonus" for me since I don't chat on Facetime to my friends all day. Keep your SSD because I need the scratch space and a SSD will fail prematurely if you use it for this. Give me more ports. Give me the most RAM possible.

On my SSD comment, keep in mind I'd love to have an SSD in mine, but only if I can also have a standard HD as well so I can keep the OS on the SSD for speed, and everything else on the other HD. I've been setting servers up like this for years, and it works great.

Mike

I agree with you, I also need the optical drive, really hoping for BD SuperDrive option, I'll pay extra for it.

And usb 3, with option for matte screen

Update possibilities

If the optical drive becomes optional:
  1. 13" MacBook Pro gets dedicated graphics.
  2. Second drive bay for HDD or SSD storage.
  3. More battery.

If they get flash storage:
  1. Dedicated drive for Mac OS X and iOS allowing Apple to separate the OSes and their utilities from the users' accounts and applications. Apple will partition the drive with Mac OS X on one, and iOS on the other, making it easy for Apple to update each OS independently.
  2. Instead of one HDD/SSD case there will be 3-4 PCI-Express slots which will make it easy for people to increase storage as they need it or wait until prices are low enough for them to purchase.

I tend to hold on to my things for a long time. I am waiting for the quad core so as to extend the life of my purchase. My resurrected iBook is 7 years old and is still doing what I need it to do.

HD is defined by vertical resolution only. So if it's greater than 720 horizontal lines then it's HD.

Er, not quite. It's defined by vertical resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio.

1024x768 is a 4:3 ratio and is not classed as HD. This is why 1366x768 was a popular resolution on HDTV's before 1080p panels became cost effective - you can drop the vertical resolution down to 720 and still have a 16:9 aspect ratio.

All this Lightpeak discussion is driving me crazy. (Dwight Shrute Voice)
FACT
1. No consumer devices available
2. No defined consumer interface standard (USB 3.0 still uses USB PORTS-Captain Obvious)
3. Primarily discussed as an internal data path (like SATA III/PCIE)
4. USB 3.0 is STILL Fast as Hell (5Gbit/s is hardly a bottleneck issue) and ready TODAY

Dont get me wrong folks, its REALLY cool tech. Its just not a reality for production here and now...USB 3.0 is. God bless and much love!

So a 1920x1200(!= 16:9) screen isnt HD? Um, not sure I'd agree. Youre totally right that "720p" and 1080i became the consumer flag of "HD"...but thats from a sales/marketing perspective.

Gasp! Realistic expectations/wants? What is this?

Seriously, I agree. MBA-style flash memory is definitely not pro material yet, at least not as the only data storage.

I can't wait that long for a new MBP.
Bring it on March 1, please.

I would be interested in them, but as Apple is starting to feel more like a hardcore monopoly than Microsoft ever did.... With no Blu-Ray and locking down program sales on iphone/ipads, censoring software that can be used on devices.

I am starting to think of getting an HP Beats laptop or maybe a Sony Vaio as a replacement for my MBP.

i hate to be the one to break this to you, but the macbook pro thats about to be released will be expensive and will be superseded by a newer version sometime in the next year.

Thanks I appreciate that. I mean, there was no way I would figure that would happen.

A new design refresh has to be a better time to upgrade than just a spec refresh, and if this is that time then so be it. At least I didn't purchase one last night and then find out about MacRumors later.

http://www.fastcompany.com/1728224/whoops-did-intel-just-leak-the-new-macbook-pro-design

I just came across this article. Pure speculation, but given this is a rumors website, I feel this is appropriate. If it is a redesign, I approve :)

It basically says Intel leaked the new Pro design in their ad accidentally. Of all the non-credible rumors we heard, this doesn't seem to be the worst since Intel is actually a company that could have a heads up on new Macs.

hey so im new can someone explain to me whata SATA port is?

The current interface for hard drives and optical drives to be connected for use on your computer. Used to be IDE Interface etc. Similar to a pci slot which is another interface to connect hardware.

Great link zau thanks

HD as is commonly referred to is more about TV and home movie standards than anything else. In an effort to standardise they picked a few and and now all your broadcast/home movie content is or will eventually be one of those.

1920x1200, or WUXGA, is not amongst the listed HD resolutions, but can certainly display HD content without scaling (since it's 16:10, you just have minor letterboxing).

You can call it high definition if you like, but it's not amongst the broadcast HD standards so it has a different VESA designation much like WSXGA+, UXGA or WXGA+, etc, etc.

I bet we see the DVD drive dropped in the next 5 years.. I see this as a major modification so most likely not in this revision although, I'd give up the DVD drive for additional drive space and an external DVD drive.

So, do think that computers will be more powerful and more energy efficient too in the next 5 years? ;)
Pretty safe bet, I'd say... (note that I will be dang mad on that day :().

I think Apple should focus on using higher quality materials rather than adding features and making the machine slimmer. After two years of use, my late 2008 MBP has a swollen battery, a dysfunctional superdrive, a failing graphics chip, a trackpad that won't click, and a left fan that isn't spinning.

Your trackpad won't click due to your swollen battery. Get it replaced (typically free from an Apple store) and both issues will disappear.

My Apple source said the same thing, but I'm not sure if I believe him, since he is just a fat kid that works in the produce department at Wal-Mart. He was so wrong about them getting in Red Delicious Apples in last week that I just doubt him now as a reliable Apple source.

He also tried to hack an orange into a watermelon/banana/smoked almond, but it tasted terrible and he tried to return it. His manager saw what he had done and refused. The kid is very upset because he thinks he should be able to do what he wants with his fruit.

Do you think the retail stores will sell out of MBPs on the day they're released? I'm not familiar with how hectic the stores are on laptop refresh days...

We can't predict the future but we can say that they wont' be in sale for sure... Usually, the retailers keep selling the old models (often side by side with the new ones, without notifying clients) until they ran out of stock.
