(Just to put my cards on the table I use the optical drive about once every couple of years when I upgrade the o.s. External optical drives are cheap. So I'd be happy w/o one.)
I wouldn't be surprised if Lion was available in two versions: a thumb drive upgrade, and a DVD one, or perhaps simply both. For MBA users a thumb drive would be ideal. A benefit of using thumb drives is that as the OS size grows you can use larger thumb keys without worrying about the capacity e.g. of a DVD disc.
Not sure how an optical drive can be build-to-order - either there's a big hole in the side of the chassis where you slide the dvd in or there isn't.

You can put something else where the optical drive is such as a hard drive or a SSD. I'd prefer they keep the optical drive though.

If there's improvements and big changes hopefully we'll see a little conference on it a week before announcement or shipping. Just I know what I'm getting into a week ahead of time! =) Excited

I think this will be the year I pull the trigger on a nice MacBook Pro. Every time they refresh / redesign them I get tempted, but always talk myself out of it because of the price or the fact I know it will be refreshed again usually in less than a year.

I have a big problem with purchasing something and feeling that it's outdated shortly thereafter, but I guess I can't live in fear forever.

Make way, I'll be a mac convert soon.

i hate to be the one to break this to you, but the macbook pro thats about to be released will be expensive and will be superseded by a newer version sometime in the next year.

I disagree. I believe this will be the last MacBook Pro refresh before the product line is discontinued.

your pragmatism undermined my drollery.

I don't think SSD with HDD will be good combination . Because when you try to open itunes who's music library on HDD it would get become slow . I think 256 GB SSD will be standard for base model .:D

Oh yes, hard disk is much too slow to play music at 256 KBit per second, or videos at a megabyte per second.

So you think a 256 GB SSD that costs more than £400 will be standard for a base model? Seriously? Difference between MBA 11" 64 and 128 GByte SSD is £153, difference between MBA 13" 128 and 256 GB SSD is £256. So the cost of 256 GB SSD to the Apple end user is £409 + cost of 64 GB SSD, minus cost of HDD.

Is that guy for real, what does he mean he hopes Apple up the price. He must be a millionaire

Probably the opposite. You don't get rich by wasting money.

Ditch the odd, give it the MBA ssd (blade) standard, higher res screen (dare I say 1920x1200 @ 15inch), kill the C2D, and use a much needed GPU buff (even the 600.00 alien ware mx11 has a 335m with a gig of video memory). And please let the i5/i7 option start around 1400.00!

Just bought a MBP last week...

So i just bought a Macbook Pro a week ago. (Completely aware of the new updates i just couldn't wait). But I'm pretty sure best buy has a 30 day return policy so if it gets updated by march 1st i'm fine. So my question is, what new updates would qualify to be worth the hassle to return and get the new one? I'm thinking Sandy Bridge+SSD+ (optional) new look.

Please tell me your opinion

retarded...

Absolutely not.

Apple, take your time. Get it right.

Only a fool would want you to rush product development.

Um, don't be a self-absorbed pee-pee head. No one is advocating a hasty release of the updated MacBook Pro line, but if the recent Intel chip problems has only caused minor delays in production to the MBP refresh, and it's just around the corner as a result, then people are understandably excited in anticipation of the latest MBP system to arrive for sale. Fool.

And only a socially awkward person would take that opportunity to make such a smug and unneeded statement.

Yeah, we got that you are a shareholder. That's about the trillionth time you've mentioned it.

Indeed, you (cvaldes) flaunt this info on these threads about your APPL stock options as if anyone here really gives a rats-azz about your investment portfolio; what's the matter, do you want a cookie for this vapid accomplishment in your life? Nobody is impressed by this.

Its funny how people and the media have attempted to twist the definition of high definition tv in the last few years from its original definition as 1080p TVs become cheap commodities and PC Monitors are close to doubling 1080p.

Just gimme 4k2k. Perhaps in 2013..

I can't wait for the new MBP, I am very curious what it will look like and what specs we'll see.. Just a few more weeks :p

My thoughts:

1. SSD drive optional, but that unit will NOT have a disc drive ($100 for a USB drive for those who need it) - more room for more SSD space

2. HD MBPs will still be available for those who need massive disc space, and those units may still have the disc drive (if they do, they will be gone in the next gen)

With the app store model, no need to buy software on discs....for those who only use an MBP (no desktop), a disc drive is important to rip CDs....those folks will need to spend the extra $100 for the disc drive. The in-machine drive will go the way of the floppy...I believe Apple dropped it first.

My late 2008 MBP (15) is still humming along, so no need to move up....

I would really love to see an interaction of iPhone/iPad with a Mac similar to the way the WebOS TouchPad and the mmm... HP Phone (don't remember the name) communicate. I'd love to be able to reply to text messages while on my Mac (when the 5-year old is playing with the iPhone)

:D

I agree. I needed a MacBook Pro for work so I bought a 15" 2.4 GHz last week. I don't regret it yet but we will see. I betting on the refresh being minor in actual use. Arrandale vs Sandy Bridge won't affect me much. This computer is lightning fast for what I'm doing. I also like the 1440 x 900 display on my mid 50's eyeballs. I'll let you know my regrets on March 1. Buy it if you need it.

Sorry, but if you need a notebook, you should buy it. I'm guessing that most of the slight improvements the new MBP has, have no impact on the usability for your wife's daily use.

Have you tried SMS messaging in iChat?

Thumb drive sounds good. I admit you can use the optical's internal space for other stuff - but what about the loading slot? I don't see it having some kind of blanking strip over the slot for machines w/o optical drives. So you'd have to have 2 types of machined chassis?

Is Apple going to do a formal announcement on these, or is it just going to slip into their inventory?

TBH the cost of an SSD over a normal hard drive is still very high. I would see Apple put the option of an SSD or a bigger normal hard drive.
