I was just saying that if they gave it as an option then I would go with additional internal space over a DVD drive... I can never have too much drive space. I believe that the Air is Apple's idea of the perfect laptop and the MacBooks are in transition to that format.

Not to mention we a are at the point where you can carry a large library of home movies and photos around for editing and various projects all on the laptop. First the processors of laptops caught up to where this was manageable but the internal storage was too small for a large video collection (+ itunes library + iphoto + other). Now we are getting into 750GB (or 1TB if you don't mind a slower drive) sized drives and its all contained. You just need an external for backup.

Part of their statement doesn't make sense. Using the ODD space for SATA storage is the same as using it for a hard drive. That's redundant. Also, why offer no ODD on the 15 but not the 13 or 17.

Finally, is 15" no ODD only? The current 15" can have the drive swapped.

To another point, why only mention the 17 having a new graphics option? They all will.

Two internal hard drive is convenient for Time Machine, just like the Mac mini Server. I guess the reason to keep the ODD on 13 inch is to keep it away from 13'' MacBook Air's market

This is NOT the redesign. My Apple source says these are the last in this form before the redesign.

My Apple source said the same thing, but I'm not sure if I believe him, since he is just a fat kid that works in the produce department at Wal-Mart. He was so wrong about them getting in Red Delicious Apples in last week that I just doubt him now as a reliable Apple source.

I hate to say it but injection molding does not make a stronger product than CNCing. Unless Apple uses something else other than aluminum, I would expect a downgrade in overall fit and finish. At least if true, I doubt anyone will have any more issues with sharp edges. Apple may try to spin this, but CNCing is much more precise than any type molding. But molding is a cheaper manufacturing process, so price cuts would make sense.

At least apple finally added a matte screen option to the 13".

I'm going to go with a blade SSD for the OS and apps (instant boot up like MBA) and regular HDD for mass storage.

That's my dream, too. But I'd want the OS to take care of managing which files go where. I want it to look like one drive to me, and to my backup system, too. I fear doing this might require the kind of hooks only a new OS could bring, and Lion is 10 months away.

The 2.5" hard drive is exactly as thick as the superdrive at its (the superdrive's) thickest point.

Not necessarily. Several vendors have 7.5 mm high drives, and they go up to 500 GB.

Not at all, no one at Apple cares about Macs. I went to the store the first day of the aluminum Mac Mini release, and the employee didn't even know they'd been updated. He actually told me I was wrong until I showed him Apple's website.

This is true. With the last refresh, the store employee had no clue about the update. He had to go check inventory and needless to say I walked out with a new MBP. :) My suspicions were that they keep it on hush until the old stock are cleared out. Who knows?

Raid can do what you want. But why do you care if your home folder, documents folder, etc... Is on another drive?

I'd say something more like in the next 5 months, not years.

I agree and hope.. I just didn't want to say that because I was given negative feedback last time that I did. I only use my DVD drive to burn and I only do that while either at the office or home.. no need to have it on the go.

Yay for an impending release and for even more enhancments, and still negative ratings for the article!

MR never ceases to amaze me.

Seriously. A guy who used to work for me ran into me at a park. He now works on apple's CPU team. He wouldn't even admit there is such a thing as an A4 :)

No one who knows anything is going to dare saying a word about it, at least if Apple signs his paycheck.

Still another untrustworthy source, but any information is better then none I guess.

My personal hopes are for the 13" mbp to have sandy bridge i5 and dedicated graphics. Hoping they don't drop the optical drive unless absolutely necessary to fit dedicated graphics. I still use mine quite a lot, but could survive with an external one.

Haha interesting. If what you say is true then I guess I'll have to wait for the next refresh. I want something dramatically different in every way

Don't buy produce at walmart :x

I hope they got rid of the optical drive... I haven't used the drive in my macbook since the last time I reinstalled snow leopard... I'm sure many people out there would think the same that the omission of an optical drive would lead to a thinner laptop (but slightly heavier, cheaper and more powerful than the MBA).

Oh goody. Yet another "i don't use it so no one else does either" post.

I'm not sure RAID is what I'm looking for, but I'd be happy to be proven wrong...

... you're suggesting to have my home folder (docs, music, pics, etc.) on the spinning platter, and the apps and system files on the SSD. I assume that's how people do it now with an SSD/opti-bay scenario. That probably works great.

But there are some elements in my home folder that I would want on the SSD. For instance, I think having photo thumbnails on the solid state would speed up iPhoto remarkably. But those are contained within the iPhoto library "package", which as a whole would *not* be a good candidate for the SSD, as it would be in many cases be too large.

I think Apple could think through a great many of these scenarios and implement the solution.

As for RAID, if one drive was SSD and one was a spinning platter, there's no (easy?) way to ensure the small, random system files and apps go on the SSD and the large media go on the other, right?

Essentially, I'm looking for Apple to implement the functionality of the Seagate Momentus XT, but with way better performance (with 32-128 SSD) and none of the sucky reviews. :)
