So many posts, and not one person seems happy!
May I be the first person to say:
WOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO!!!
That's not true. I'm happy and I'll probably upgrade my PowerBook G4 in a month or two. I think it's pretty normal to hear from people that expected more as apposed to the people that are stoked. Complainers complain.

The extra battery life is great. Can't expect much until battery technology improves and Apple is not in the battery business.

If a 17" LED was available for a reasonable price Apple would be using it.

There's no radical redesign, but it's a design that'll be hard to improve upon.

These are a nice upgrade and probably a good place to start if you're still lugging around a PowerBook G3/G4. Plus, all the models seem to be well equipped.

Paranoid Newbie

On my 2.4Ghz 15.4 the side of the box says:

"15.4-inch (diagonal) TFT glossy widescreen display"

This is supposed to be LED-backlit, right? Why don't they say that?

Well, look at it this way...it never said that it was a ccfl on older models. Who care? ALL new 15 inchers have it...nuff said. Move on, get over it. :D

Because the screen is TFT, the backlight is the LED part.

I also noticed something else when I accidentally shook my desk. While my existing Mac holds the image brightness constant, the new display shakes with the movement of the vibration. To be clear, the brightness (maybe contrast vibrates) while my older Mac holds steady. This would bother me on a flight during even minimal turbulence.

Most LED displays containing a large number of LEDs are actually pulsed - rather than constant illumination. This allows a better light/heat ratio to be gained.

Perhaps you're seeing a shimmering caused by these LEDs being pulsed - when you move the Macbook, or when it vibrates?

The old ones didn't say they were ccfl, but it did specify "backlight lamp contains mercury", that warning is now covered up by the new stickers w/ the new specs. :)

"Same brightness and color range as previous screens"

I bought a 15.4" LED MBP first thing yesterday (2.4ghtz... 256MB nVidia etc) and the screen is noticeably brighter than my 6-month old MBP and 1-week old MacBook. The colour-range seems to be about the same but it seems more crisp. I have a feeling they don't want to make the current 17" look too bad so the say the 15" versions aren't brighter or more rich...

This computer is amazing.

loungepop, have you experienced anything similar to avflyer?

I notice uneven illumination along the bottom almost like subtle shadows that form along the bottom of a near flat curtain. It is subtle but when compared to my older mac is noticeable

I'd like to know what benefits to battery life Santa Rosa gives the MBP's.
Me too. That would be a huge advantage to this new model.

Adding another 30-60 mins would be great. Even if running the hard drive and wifi and getting another 20 mins of battery life would be great.

Oh, okay! In normal operation the MB doesn't get very hot. Now when I'm encoding a video or something. . . watch out! That sucker heats up. Still not as hot as my old 12-inch PowerBook though. That thing would heat up if I watched a flash animation. Fans on all the time. Still a great little machine, though, and living a happy second life as my friend's mobile DJ rig.
I'd be curious to know how the new MBP deals with heat. It would be nice to hear that it runs cooler.

When I initialy started my machine and it was on the beige screen with the single apple in the center I thought I noticed a very, very slight darker area 2/3 of the way down the screen, but now it's all consistent a day later, probably just wierd lighting where it was sitting. The shaking and all that is impossible. The screen is very consistent, and it is exactly like they say... instantly bright, no "warm up".

Well, it's a bit warmer than my previous MBP on the left palm rest (over the hard drive I believe)... not too bad though...

This is good news.

I returned the unit I had this morning and the leader took it to the back and came out shortly there after with a replacement unit. He too noticed the artifacts and was ready to sub-out the unit. As the models on display are still the older ones and as the store had not yet received the 17" models, I was admittedly cautious to do the swap out. I didn't want them to open yet another box only to have me reject it (like sending back the second bottle of wine). Someone else noted on the other thread that you can't fairly compare images from PowerBook G4s to MBPs. So maybe its a combination of me getting use to it along with a unit that had an issue. I have been a Mac user since 1988 and can't imagine that LED backlit displays have been selected in spite of having issues. That said, not all progress is....progress.

I will wait until they get 17" units so that I can compare the two side-by-side. Again, the unit I had also got warmer than I am use to on the left palm side. Checking older models on display, while the older 15" seemed cooler than my unit ran yesterday, they were warmer than the 17" units. Perhaps because of the larger surface area, the 17's just seem cooler. All in all, I am glad to hear that others are happy with the new 15" MBPs.

Shipping yet?

Anyone's online orders for SR MBP's shipping yet? I ordered yesterday at 1PM CA time and neither the iPod nor the MBP has shipped yet.

A bit warmer?? wow..

I have the first gen MBP and I help reduce the heat mine generates by propping up the back, which helps keep some of the heat generation down (by creating some normal airflow under the MBP)

My understanding was that the C2D MBP's didn't have the same heat problem that the original CD MBP's did.

That's good to know.

As far as the LED screen, I'm most interested to see some real world battery life improvements over time.

I'm not seeing much of a difference in battery time from this brand new model I have to my previous MBP...

Also, LED screens will stay brighter longer over the years, not yellowing like conventional fluo LCDs, right? And they won't burn out and go dead as soon?

That's the #1 BIG advantage I've heard of. I like my laptops to stay useful for a long, long time.

Umm... as someone stuck with a Rev A MBP thinking about whether to update to this round, I can't imagine how it could be that a flouro LCD wouldn't outlast the usefulness life of the laptop. And this is coming from someone who kept the last laptop I had for 5 years!

"My understanding was that the C2D MBP's didn't have the same heat problem that the original CD MBP's did"

No "global" experience, but I had a CD2GHz 15"MBP from the second week of production and it was unbearably hot when running full bore until manual fan control came out. I now have a C2D 2.33 15" and it's every bit as hot as its predecessor. My take: no difference in CD or C2D MBP heat production, 15s are hot, 17s are not. Maybe that's why there's no 12"MBP.

And frankly, that is why I am waiting for the 17" to hit the store. I checked both the older 15" and 17" on display and the 17" just felt cooler.
