Unless your electronics stores are far better than those in Europe and North America, salespeople don't know anything more than the little card next to the machine tells them, but they'll happily tell you whatever you want to hear.
just as a comment, I lived in Japan and the electronics salespeople in general (and especially at a place like Akihabara in Tokyo) know a hell of a lot more than the average salesperson in the USA.

I'd concur, having just put in 2gb of RAM. i did notice a slight increase, but the mother of all impacts was when I upgraded from 512mb to 1.25mb of RAM.
sweet. I was wondering if I should have ordered more than one 1GB stick from newegg. glad to know 1.25 is enough to make the macbook fly. now i'm just waiting for it to get here.

Cheers for the suggestion Multimedia.

Another question: how do I control whether the Macbook sleeps or not when the display lid is closed? I read that the Macbooks are special in not having to sleep with the lid closed, but haven't come across that option anywhere yet.

Turn On Sleep With Power Key Then S Key

Since MacBook is designed to keep running when closed so you can drive a 24" 1920 x 1200 display, you need to invoke sleep by pressing the power key which will reveal 4 choices which may be invoked by pressing the "R" key to restart, "S" key to sleep, Command+Period key to cancel and enter or return keys to shut down. Simply press the "S' key and close the lid.

Not invoking sleep is what I'm having difficulty with - when the display gets to within an inch or so of the trackpad sleep kicks in, and I don't know how to stop it.

I'm kinda guessing here because I don't have a MacBook, but I seem to recall someone saying that they were able to wake up the MacBook with an external keyboard after it went to sleep. If you're switching from open to closed, you may have to let it go to sleep and then wake it up. I don't know if you can power the MacBook on from an external keyboard with the lid closed, but I'm pretty sure you can wake it up from sleep this way.

I don't think there is a way to be honest, and I'm not sure why you';d want to?!

What Multi was talking about was when you have a monitor, mouse and keyboard hooked up, the mac recognises that you don't want to sleep but rather you want to run with the lid closed - my bro on his xp machine has to go in and change the settings each time!

I thought some would be interested in my dock bounce performance (arguably the best bench marking method around!) with my Macbook 1.83 2gb of ram - my Macbook loads up programs before a dock bounce is a third of the way through! It hasn't even hit the top of it's bounce and mail and system pref for example are open and ready to use.

My imac G5 2ghz would take at least three bounces (getting fixed so I can't test).

System Preferences...Energy Saver, Sleep Pane, Set Top Slider To Never

You can still sleep it when you want to from the blue Apple menu. Or just lift the lid and do the power button then s key.

Remember to go back in and change this when you are going to be running on battery.

Turn Off Animate Opening Applications For Faster Launching

They will launch even faster if you turn that bouncing OFF in the Dock Preferences. Uncheck "Animate opening applications". Those bounces waste processor cycles so launching takes longer with animation on. :)

Yep Yep Yep, there has to be some good from living in all this smog! :D

mmm... Macbook :)

After reading these forums for a week or so I took the plunge and got the 1.83 with a gig of ram. I was a bit worried by all of the issues that were being reported, but I'm pleased to say that I've expereinced none of them.

It gets warm, but no warmer than the last revision of the iBook. I love how thin it is and the screen is simply stunning. There are reflections, but I had reflections on teh iBook too, they were just less mirror-like and more distorted.

No app runs slower than it did on the iBook and the intel native ones are faster than I thought they would be. The iBook was the best computer I've ever owned (it was my switcher's purchase) but the macbook is well on its way to surpassing it!

Oh, and the magnetic stuff rocks.

I also just wanted to say thank you to you guys- this thread contains so much information and has really helped!

Congratulations! As a current iBook owner (12", 1.33Ghz) looking to possibly move up to a MacBook, I am happy to hear your good experiences so far.

I have a 20" iMac CD (256MB vram, 2GB ram) that I absolutely LOVE...however, the reality is that I'm always on this iBook, even when in the presence of my iMac (like right now). :) So, I'm likely going to sell my iMac, buy a MacBook, and if/when I am satisfied that it is a suitable replacement for my iBook, sell that off (or hand it down) as well.

This thread really has tons of useful bits of info for those of us queueing for a macbook. To bad you have to fight your way through so much - off topic/ back and forth fights between members - clutter

Getting ready place my order for a 2.0 white. What do you think of these discoloration posts? Anyone NOT having this problem? Any other problems I should be aware of?

Thanks

Same here... mine doesn't get used 8 hours a day everyday, but It's been used enough I think this would be showing up if it was going to happen?
