best thing about this update is that we won't hear the whining about of lack of Macbooks/ibooks updates. I was so tired of it.
Now is time to focus on the desktop professional line. What will be next for the Powermacs?

Some folks in the Gizmodo discussion of the MacBooks are saying that dual-layer DVD burners are available as a BTO option, but I can find no reference whatsoever to that on Apple's site. Are the guys at Gizmodo high on something, or was I just not looking closely enough?

That's not the case. The two top end models come with superdrives and the bottom end comes with a combo drive. No other options exist, yet. :)

I, like so many, need to plug in my GSM modem that works worldwide. Or how about G3? Nothing.

I do that already with my G4/933MHz iBook. Use Internet Connect via Bluetooth to any Bluetooth capable mobile phone (I use an SE 750i) and Bob's yer uncle. So what's the problem?

BTW: I jest ordered the 1.83 MB w/ 1 GB RAM.

A few days ago, I dropped my olde G4 iBook (dim screen, 10 min battery life and failing optical drive after three years of abuse) ) on a tiled floor and cracked a corner. It still works fine though, but I think my subconscious may have been telling me it was time to step up.

soldered cpus

Probably too early to tell until someone opens one up but my guess that the jonahs are soldered onto the mobo is probably accurate? Wouldnt mind purchasing this model and upgrading to the merom when they are released but the integrated graphics makes that almost pointless.

Well, I think the most positive thing about this is the price point. Much better specs at little increase in price when compared to the iBooks. :D

You need to access the store through your Uni's LAN in the UK. There's a national agreement that includes better discounts and the 3 year warranty. Discounts on Apple software are even better.

And for new students? Can you get the educational discount at Apple stores too?

I think they did several spectacular things.

1. DVI Out up to 1900 x 1200
2. Spanning for Extended Desktop
2. Gigabit Ethernet
3. 1280 x 800 13.3" Glossy Widescreen
4. Built-In iSight w/microphone
5. 2GHz Core Duo
6. 2GB Max RAM
7. MagSafe Power Adapter

Please tell me what is not Spectacular about all that?

This:

3. 1280 x 800 13.3" Glossy Widescreen

I dropped my 17" PB *gasp* and also dented in a corner 15 months ago ... it's worked great since, which stands to show the durability of computers nowadays =) Altho' I had to replace the AC connector twice, the battery once, and the HD once ... so I suppose it's not as durable as I thought. But still a very reliable computer =)

Time for it to get replaced (probably give my PB to my 13 yr old niece)

I don't know. Have you been accepted into a specific Uni? It may be worth phoning the Apple store and specifically asking about the "Higher Education National Agreement" deals.

I dont understand why they cant make this an option like theyh have for the MBP... am I missing something?? Not everyone wants a glossy screen. Still, its pretty sweet and I bet they make it optional in upcoming revs

You realize that all the Powerbooks also had magnets there right?

Score one to dr_lha, and your credibility has increased with the news of GMA 950 in the MacBook. I am looking forward to the 965, but I don't think this will be as bad as so many people made it out to be.

Is everyone keeping score? It was a MacBook, it was designed with Integrated Graphics, and the pricepoint was at $1099. The sane folks and the crazies have been appropriately labeled. :D
