Black Rip Off!!

It does come with the larger hard drive, but you still pay a premium.
You can get the white MacBook with a 80 GB Hard Drive for $50 extra so $1349, your are then paying $150 for a Black paint job!!!
What a rip off!

The hi end MacBook model should come with something else, at least 1GB of ram, or more Video Ram like 128 or 256MB (64MB of vram is reducliously small, and useless for gaming.) something that is worth the $150. They all should have the option to come in Black or White, like the Nano's. Who would pay $50 extra for a black Nano?

Apple has become this money hungry corporation, milking us for whatever they can get away with. This is only one example of many. They are getting a little out of control.

I think they should of kept the screen sizes either the way they were with 12" and 14" models. I personally would never want a small screen, but there are people that want one. The small 13.3" screen is what will keep me from never buying one of them. Of course they will get my money because that means I will end up buying a Macbook Pro.

Which by the way I always thought The MacBook Pro should have come in a nice Black Steel Colored option, like the Black Motorola Razr., right from the start. When the first released the Macbook Pros. I think that would bring alot of sales back to the MacBook Pros. The old Silver look for the MacBook Pro is old over 5 years now. They need a new look, or at least an alternative look.

They also should of made a Core Solo Macbook for $899, with only a 40GB Hard Drive so they could offer a low end model to compete a little with Dell's $500 laptops, abnd everyone else's $600-$700 laptops.

That is just how I feel

Probably all of this has been said in the past 20 pages I didn't read, but:

* The new Macbook seems to pave the way for Merom chips in the Macbook Pro. Chip for chip, there isn't much difference between the two right now (not counting all other factors). It would seem to make sense that the Macbook will eventually get the Core Duos at higher speeds when the Merom makes its way to the Macbook Pro.

* I know integrated graphics is kind of a bummer, but hey, that's what the Pro models are for. And besides, it might not stay like this forever depending on what happens to the MBP.

* Why the heck is the black one $150 more than the white? This makes no sense - it's like charging $50 more for a black iPod. I doubt the market will take well to this.

* I don't know how anyone else feels, but I do like the consolidation of the 12" and 14" iBooks into the new widescreen MB. Apple's probably thrilled too, since there's less manufacturing cost.

* Overall, feels like a very decent introduction of the Intel processors into the iBook lineup. I'll miss the 12" Powerbook, though - I always thought this was a good seller for Apple? My co-worker has a 12" PowerBook, and I covet it immensely - maybe by the time I can afford a new laptop, it will return somehow.

Dare I say it? The black looks a little like a... Dell  <turns and runs>

And I know it has already been asked many times here, but: why in the world are they charging so much more just for the color? (Don't tell me that an 80GB hard drive costs $200 more than a 60GB) What is with you, Apple?

Seriously, IMO the black is ugly (but of course I still haven't seen it in the flesh), and I am disappointed that Apple decided to scrap the color idea (if it ever even existed)... Looks like they are becoming more conservative with age, as so many unfortunate people.

Anyways, enough of my griping - everything else looks fantastic; in fact, better than expected.

Wow, you sure have a lot of opinions! I think that you should apply for a job at Apple. After a few years of working your way up the corporate ladder, you may even be able to get Steve Jobs' job! And then, with your grand ideas and perseverence, I'm sure you can run Apple into the ground in no time at all.

I have a feeling most of the people who are drooling over the glossy screen haven't actually had to use a laptop with this "feature" for an extended period of time. It's absolutely horrendous. My friend has a 17" PC laptop with a beautiful, but glossy, screen and it's a ngithmare to use -- reflection city, eye strain, blah! At least it's still an option on the MBP.

And like some previous posters, I too am still waiting for a 12" PowerBook replacement. If nothing happens by the fall, I may have to bite the bullet and buy a 15" MBP.

The stores won't have them for a bit. Regent Street, the flagship store in London, advised me to buy online.
Maybe in London. I just got back from the Galleria Apple Store in Houston (was there at 10AM opening time :D ) and they said maybe later today when FedEx comes, but surely by tomorrow morning. I'm going to try later this afternoon to buy one, but any picts I was going to post will obviously have to wait until they come in.

Mark my words...you're going to see PLENTY of black MBs around. It's a style thing. A laptop is a luxury item any way you slice it, and people with a little more dough are going to want to flaunt it. It's just like getting the optional "metallic" paint on your new car for an extra thou.

Where is Quicken?

Did anyone else notice that according the the specs page Quicken 2006 is NOT included with the MacBook. :D I wonder if Intuit fell out of favor seeing as Think Secret reported today that Quicken won't be universal till 2008.

Ummm, Apple is a publicly traded company that is in the business to earn as much money as it can for its shareholders.

GMA 950 graphics is a slight bummer, byt it doesn't really matter if you think about it. Like the Mac mini, you most likely won't want to be gaming on this thing. If you want that, then go for a MacBook Pro. The slight increase in price is also a downer, but that was kind of to be expected. These two things aside, the MacBooks look VERY nice. All models are Core Duo and have widescreen displays, which are huge plusses for a lot of people, including myself. I would get one if I didn't have my eyes on a Mac mini Core Duo. I'll be at the Apple store in Manhattan this Friday, so I'll get to play around with them! :D

wasnt there a press release that said the macbooks would be available in stores today?

called my local apple store and they said " yeah we got them in last night, but not sure if well have the time to get any out on the floor today, call us back tomorrow."

ughhhh! i wanted to go look at one TODAY!

No Waiting to Buy List Queue in Houston?

Congrats IAR. Have fun scoring one later. Wouldn't they put you in a waiting to buy list queue?

Yeah - you're probably right. Folks with money enough to afford a laptop look at it pragmatically: the black paint adds nothing to the functionality of the machine. But folks with cash to spare look at it stylisticly (sp?): "I can be this much cooler looking with a black MB!"

Still hoping for that bubblegum pink MB, but hey, we all have dreams...

Where are those prices from? The Apple Store for Further Education or Apple Store for Education? DOes being in education give you a free apple care? Sorry about this, just I can't seem to get this price else where.

Do apple employee's on the phone allow haggling on the phone slightly to get the price down to secure a sale?

H/E price! AppleCare is free... and there should be 6 months interest free credit running until the 31st of May...splendid!:D

I ordered a Black MacBook at 7am PST. Its a premium that is uncalled for but something that I was willing to pay. I have full confidence in Steve Jobs and I'm sure every aspect of the launch was thought through. I'm positive that people will pay the premium for that black color.

No Time To Put Them Out? What About Time To Just Sell Them?

Now that is unbelievable. WHERE?

No Time To Put Them Out? What About Time To Just Sell Them?

I would definitely escalate that call to the management.

Underwhelmed by the GPU, the RAM and the fact that if I want to top model I have to have it in black. I like white. Why the hell can't I get the top model in white? That just plain sucks. No MacBook for me.

Why can't you get the top model in white? What's not available on the white that is on the black? Did you even LOOK at these machines?
