Microsoft releases laptops in two color schemes and charges more for the non-standard one that many people will like?

I must have forgot about that.

I guess he means MS releases N versions of an OS with different price points (with not much differences between most of them, Home ::cough:: is not an OS), most buggy ...

I am stunned that this seems to be a serious question around here. Does Apple think that I will always go to a Sturbucks anytime I need to check my emails? I want to be able to use a quadband GSM card that works not only in the U.S. but also in other countries (that may not have Sturbucks, etc). And I don't want anything build in the way Dell does it now (which is a stupid Verizon CDMA system that does not work abroad). That's what PCMCIA cards are sold for. If Apple comes up with some GSM/sim card modem on its own, fine. But until then I am not sure how they are going to extend into the PC laptop crowd. That plus the magnet thing I can't get over.

Then get a 15" so you've got a slot.
Give the magnet thing a rest! They've been in PowerBooks for years.
Arre you wearing a tin foil hat?

Before the introduction of Macbook I was wondering how it will look like, which configurations it will have, now it is out and I have new questions in my mind, such as;

Should I pay the $162 difference between low-end white Macbook and high-end Macbook after education discount, and get 0.17Ghz more CPU power with Superdrive

or,

Should I wait a couple of months so that some possible bugs or problems could be fixed (with Rev. B)

I'm really undetermined.

I just called them and they are selling MacBooks to anyone who enters. They just don't have time to put any display units out - probably because they can sell all they have. So just a lookie loo to see one might not happen. But if you're ready to buy one, no problem.

No, it means you can't use it up a mountain.

BTW - I've operated a laptop at 14,600 ft and had no problems. ;)

AWESOME specs for the price- my only complaint is that I really was hoping for a $999 (and possibly even $899) model. Maybe Single core and without the iSight and all the extra goodies, even lower resolution.

Planes are pressurized to make the inside feel around 6-7 thousand feet. That's why your ears pop.

Scared of magnets.....Really.

Widescreen doesn't do much for typing. But it does give you more real estate to play with for spreadsheets or to have palettes be out of the way in Photoshop or Word. Why don't you want a TV with that format? You haven't said anything yet that makes sense.

Against (some) Widescreen (TVs):
Many widescreens TVs do not scroll horizontally very naturally ... Do not ask me why but they do (not) ...

Only if you fly on planes with unpressurized cabins. But hey, it's cheaper, right?

Seriously though, all passenger planes are pressurized to the equivalent of 5,000 ft altitude. SO just don't open the window and you'll be fine :)

Wanna congrat Thinksecret... They had right afterall ;=)
I think you mean AppleInsider. TS said MacBooks in Jan, then March, then April, then May, then June, then back to May, then last week, and finally they got it right this week. Not only that, they said Core Solo in the low end model. 1.5GHz Core Solo vs. 1.83GHz Core Duo is a HUGE difference.

AI has said all along April-May and Core Duo. Cudos to AI.

Signs of things to come?

Interesting that the MacBook is so close in specs to the MacBookPro.

In the past, I think you were more likely to see Apple cripple the iBook so the specs between iBooks and Powerbooks (esp on CPU) showed clear differentiation between the product lines. Part of that was due to the slow release of processor upgrades from Motorola/IBM.

I think/hope this says volumes about both:
a) Apple's confidence in Intel to deliver the goods with regular releases of newer, faster, more capable chips, and
b) Apple's roadmap in terms advanced functionality and faster refreshes of the product line going forward.

It makes you feel good if you're buying a MacBook that you're getting specs that are pretty close to the MBP. Might even make it worthwhile for the extra $200 for black. :)

Yeah I think if your cabin depressurizes or the windows "open", your Macbook will be the last thing on your mind

Hidden speakers

I think the little thing next to the IR is the sleep indicator LED.

Also, I wonder how the speakers are on this thing, my friends iBook never sounded great.

I wonder WHERE the speakers are on this thing... Are they also integrated in the CPU? ;)

Just been on the line to the Apple man

1. AppleCare is now again £15x whatever it was before, there is a technical glitch on the Apple site under H/E. Also the contract of cheaper AppleCare (which was around £60) has also been scrapped!

The 3 year warranty is buried in the terms and conditions on the "National Agreement Higher Education Individual" website. This is a different department to the "Education Store" and you can only access it from your Uni's LAN, usually through the IT dept's webpages. Here's a quote:

"10.1.1 All Apple-branded desktop and portable computer products shall be subject to a 36 calendar month warranty period commencing from the date of delivery."

Note that, unlike Applecare, there's no telephone support, though.

Well, I just signed my wife up for Apple's hardware beta-testing program and ordered one of these. 1-5 days shipping. Probably get it in two weeks.

Anyone have experience with Kingston RAM? I managed to find (in the Netherlands) 1 GB 667 DDR2 SO-DIMM RAM for E131 each. (they apparently are for the MBP 2 GHz. These would fit the right specifications, correct? Somewhere else I found Kingston RAM 1GB 667 DDR2 SO-DIMM for E148 specifically for the MacBook 13.3". Sound like a good deal?

Also, is it easy to install RAM? Because if it is, I may just be able to save myself some money, and buy two of these instead of going for the "measly" upgrade to 1 GB via Apple (that I can actually afford).

<bump>

I dont think I can afford to dish out £950 for a 'black mac.

I currently have a 1.33/1GB/60GB/9550/Combo 12"

I feel the G4 is soo slow I want to throw it on the floor...I've had enough really!

Two options are:

CD1.83/1GB/60GB/GMA950/Combo/FrontRow+iSight £703 H/E
CD2.0/1GB/60GB/GMA950/Super/FrontRow+iSight £831 H/E

Is it worth getting the 2nd Model? I've yet to burn a DVD or need to burn one. I have a PC at home which I backup onto through Wi-Fi. Is the 2.0 THAT much more powerful than the 1.83 to deserve £100 (lets face it the Super is only £30)

Regards

Can the Combo Drive read a DL DVD???

The SuperDrive says it can read them but nothing is noted for the Combo Drive.
