Yeah I think if your cabin depressurizes or the windows "open", your Macbook will be the last thing on your mind

I'm just shocked and dismayed that Apple has once again failed to consider the market of parachuting computer enthusiasts. This kind of attitude just smacks of Microsoft.

Only if you fly on planes with unpressurized cabins. But hey, it's cheaper, right?

Seriously though, all passenger planes are pressurized to the equivalent of 5,000 ft altitude. SO just don't open the window and you'll be fine :)

Hey ! I fly gliders, but I do not get that high (too cold) ;)

PS: Just trying to remove the newbie tag ...

yes... but my whole point was i wanted to "look" at one before i bought it...

actually to be quite honest i dont want a macbook, i will be purchasing a macbook pro... but i did want to see the screen on the new macbook.

maybe i wait to make that trip...

just saw the flicker photos that someone posted and this basically answered my question... you see i am going to upgrade to a new MBP soon and though since there was now the glossy screen option maybe i should look at one befor i ordered... well this pic made my decision easy without making the drive to see all of the pompus teenagers at the local tampa apple store...

way too much reflection for me... ill stick with the anti glare...

The 3 year warranty is buried in the terms and conditions on the "National Agreement Higher Education Individual" website. This is a different department to the "Education Store" and you can only access it from your Uni's LAN, usually through the IT dept's webpages. Here's a quote:

"10.1.1 All Apple-branded desktop and portable computer products shall be subject to a 36 calendar month warranty period commencing from the date of delivery."

Note that, unlike Applecare, there's no telephone support, though.

So if I order my MacBook now from the H/E store, it will come with 36 months warranty? I dont give two hoots about the phone..I know how to fix software stuff!

Regards

Does anyone know if they will ever have an option to ship the keyboard with the Dvorak layout? You can easily rearrange the keys, but then you end up with those little "guide bumps" in the wrong places (on the F and J keys rather than the U and H)

At the very least, anywhere that you can buy just those four keys with the correct guides? It's nice to be able to place your hands without looking down.

That's what I hate about laptops, though I concede that this is a problem that is not limited to apple.

You can get the white MacBook with a 80 GB Hard Drive for $50 extra so $1349, your are then paying $150 for a Black paint job!!!
What a rip off!

Then don't buy a black one!

Honest question - are you for real? I've never had to get anything serviced by CompUSA, but the few times I've gone into one for a small purchase, I leave the store feeling totally depressed. My experience: limited merchandise and clueless sales staff.
To be honest, the only reason I do it is because I don't want to get stuck with a laptop or display with a stuck pixel. If it comes with one out of the box, it goes back, no questions asked. If you buy it from Apple, that's not so easy to accomplish.

I dont think I can afford to dish out £950 for a 'black mac.

I currently have a 1.33/1GB/60GB/9550/Combo 12"

I feel the G4 is soo slow I want to throw it on the floor...I've had enough really!

Two options are:

CD1.83/1GB/60GB/GMA950/Combo/FrontRow+iSight £703 H/E
CD2.0/1GB/60GB/GMA950/Super/FrontRow+iSight £831 H/E

Is it worth getting the 2nd Model? I've yet to burn a DVD or need to burn one. I have a PC at home which I backup onto through Wi-Fi. Is the 2.0 THAT much more powerful than the 1.83 to deserve £100 (lets face it the Super is only £30)

Regards

I bought an external LG USB/FW DL DVD Burner cheap (< $100) and I can duplicate DVDs on the fly ... (It is white too!)
My iBook is NOT slow :(

Kingston has traditionally been one of the best RAM mfgrs. I assume this is still true. Matching up with a 4 hour old Apple laptop may be tricky, though. In a day or 2, good Apple RAM sellers will have all the specs up and most likely prices to beat Apple. (maybe a week or two)

Sell or Keep?

The question is - do I sell my 4 month old PowerBook G4 12"? It has a two year warrenty and an extra 512mb of RAM. Apart from two very small dents, it is in perfect condition? Would anyone buy it? I could just do with the mid-range white model :) Any thoughts? Any offers!

Seb

It's the same memory as the MBP.

Just make sure it's the "National Agreement Higher Education" store and not the "Education Apple" store and you're golden!

Question for you guys..

This will be my first mac.. But buying one is a must!

Do you guys recommend I get this at a store with its proprietary warranty or the Apple Store. I get education discounts at the store. Although I hear applecare is next to useless when it comes to repair, replacement, RMA.. etc. Am I better off going to (for ex) Futureshop (although it's Not in yet on the site), Bestbuy?

Well, I'm completely glad I bought my iBook back in October because I don't like the new MacBook's at all. ESPECIALLY the Black one...I think it's grose. No offence to those who like it but really, I don't like it at all. I like the new features though.

EDIT: Ok...So In the shock of the moment I think I may have overreacted...the new MacBook is slowly growing on me. But I still don't like the keyboard...it looks really funny to me.

Kind of funny. This is more or less what I started to expect over the last couple of weeks. It's not a great spec, and it continues the Apple tradition of boutique systems rather than being some kind of attempt to break into the mass market. I was, from what Apple was saying a month or two ago, initially thinking it would be more of the latter, with a $900 model that has roughly the same spec as the $1,100 (minus the Core Duo.)

It will sell well. It just will not do much to deal with Apple's marketshare issues. Perhaps a lower cost MacBook will appear later this year, once the bulk of the .edu sales are complete.

Thanks for the reply. I've been looking, and if they do match up correctly, it could save 200 Euros (2GB for 296+shipping rather than 500 Euros BTO).
Now, the more important question: is RAM easy to install? Is there a "How to install RAM in your Mac Notebook" tutorial somewhere? (assuming, of course, that the system for doing such is similar in/for all cases)

The black isn't more expensive

Sorry if already posted...but 20+ pages so...yeah..

but anyway, the black is NOT more expensive. it's just made to look that way, but if you want the middle Macbook in black just choose black and downgrade the hd

After looking at those pics, I think the keys might be wierd to type on? Anyone else have any insight/comments about these new keys?
