So Mad

I am such a devoted Mac-head and have been since the begining. But I'm sorry, it's just WRONG to charge $200 more for another color. Yes I know it has a 20GB hard drive increase, but when you look at it that way even your payin 200 bucks for 20GB! The color doesn'y cost them extra does it? I was soooo looking forward to a new black MacBook but, I won't pay an extra $200 dollars for it. That is just WRONG!

A friend of my 2nd cousins dog walker said that he saw a new slightly smaller powermac tower through the front window of apples top secret lab (he walked down the wrong street) Ended up in Cueprtino from Australia. Apparently it is dubbed the Mac pro. He says the specs which had blown out the open window during a freak gust listed this

Quad Core Intel 3.2 Ghz (2X2)
2 GB DDR2 Ram
250GB HD
x1900xt graphics 512
SuperDooperDrive (BluRay)
$3299

Dual Core 3.2 Ghz
1GB DDR2
250GB HD
x1600XT graphics 512
SuperDrive (option of SuperDooperDrive) $499
$2199

Dual Core 3Ghz
1GB DDR2
160GB
x1600XT 256
SuperDrive (option of SuperDooperDrive) $499
$1599

So here we have it the Mac Pro
The rough writing suggested the catch phrase would be
"Twice the power, in half the tower"

Very, very amusing - especially the 'catch phrase' (I could actually see them using that)

Just make sure it's the "National Agreement Higher Education" store and not the "Education Apple" store and you're golden!
its the H/E store for the University of Cambridge:confused:

but anyway, the black is NOT more expensive. it's just made to look that way, but if you want the middle Macbook in black just choose black and downgrade the hd

When I look in the custom-to-order options, there are options to up the black MB's HD to 100 or 120 GB, but no option to downgrade it.... And if you custom-to-order the White 2GHz MB with an 80GB HD, it's $150 less than the black one with the 80GB HD. (This is the US store).

Can the Combo Drive read a DL DVD???

The SuperDrive says it can read them but nothing is noted for the Combo Drive.

Yes. Pretty much all DVD readers can read DL DVDs. Dual Layer DVDs are normal, indeed I'd guesstimate that as many as 50% of all commercially sold DVDs are DL, if not more. The only thing that's new in the Dual Layer DVD world is that you can burn them now.

Does anyone know if they will ever have an option to ship the keyboard with the Dvorak layout? You can easily rearrange the keys, but then you end up with those little "guide bumps" in the wrong places (on the F and J keys rather than the U and H)

At the very least, anywhere that you can buy just those four keys with the correct guides? It's nice to be able to place your hands without looking down.

That's what I hate about laptops, though I concede that this is a problem that is not limited to apple.

I too use the Dvorak keyboard layout, however, just like learning QWERTY ... once you learn it, you don't need the keys anymore ... so what's the point in rearranging them? Besides, if you move the keys, then others can type on your keyboard ... which we all know goes against the real reason we use Dvorak, to laugh at the QWERTY users and how ineffecient they type! :)

Thanks for the reply. I've been looking, and if they do match up correctly, it could save 200 Euros (2GB for 296+shipping rather than 500 Euros BTO).
Now, the more important question: is RAM easy to install? Is there a "How to install RAM in your Mac Notebook" tutorial somewhere? (assuming, of course, that the system for doing such is similar in/for all cases)

I can only answer for the last iBooks ... It was very easy (and Instructions came with the pdf manuals Apple gives you, so Apple supposed end users could do it) you just needed a screwdriver of the right size ...

with all the griping about the glossy screen, how long before someone starts selling screen covers that are anti-glare? i think someone will.

That's certainly not possible on the UK store.

You can upgrade the middle spec white one to 80GB and find that the difference for black is £90 ($150 on the US store).

Just picked mine up from the Meadowhall store in Sheffield (in the UK). They said I was the first one to buy one from there! They didn't have black ones, but I wanted the top spec white one anyway, and got that on my student discount.

It's a lovely looking machine, just waiting for it to firewire all the info from my iMac...

Yum!

I'm way faster with Dvorak than I have ever been with Qwerty, and have never used a keyboard that was rearranged. The only reason I want to do it now is for the opposite reason you suggested. That is, so that others can type on it without changing the layout back (and therefore messing me up when I don't notice)

They're hunt-and-peck anyway, so rearranging just made sense to me. But whatever, I don't see it anytime soon. :)

I'd rather use a Dell then go with Intel graphics on a Mac. Or sever a pinky finger. In any case Intel graphics == cheap crap. So much for Apple quality but we've all been over this topic with the Mini haven't we? Still. Its painful to see Apple go down this road.

And why would I want to buy a computer that can't connect to a wireless network other than WiFi and Bluetooth? That already kills these machines for any serious business user who happens to travel to other countries.
Where, and what, on earth are you talking about? My battered old iBook G4 has served me well in over 60 countries in every corner of the planet (e.g., it's been online in 7 countries on 3 continents in the past two weeks, if that's road warriorey enough for you).

I've never come across a situation where there was internet access available and I couldn't use it. When all else fails, I jam my US$8 bluetooth dongle into the USB port and use GPRS/EDGE via the mobile phone sitting in my pocket. (I also carry a USB wifi stick and a 5-metre USB extension cable for those times when I can't quite otherwise catch a wifi signal from a comfortable spot or inside my hotel room).

The MacBook adds bluetooth but takes away the modem, so that's sort of a wash from my perspective. Another dongle to buy, that's all.

If there's anything I'm worried about with the MacBook, it's the glossy screen. I often need to use the thing outdoors. Hopefully the extra brightness will make up for it. Or maybe I can eat a chicken drumstick and then use my greasy fingerprints to create a DIY matte effect.

Why keep bothering telling its matte display

jesus if this is not glossy.. then what is..

so shiny... Going to be fun using it at beach :D
It's hard to understand your wording. But perhaps this will answer you: People have been talking about the matte black case, not display.

Hehe, that tends to be the case (the screwdriver, I mean).
It's good to know that they provide a manual of sorts for this. I'm good at reading manuals :D:cool:
I looked it up, and the RAM for MBP and MB is the same (pc2-5300)... I guess it's happy-hunting for me :D

The 3 year warranty is buried in the terms and conditions on the "National Agreement Higher Education Individual" website. This is a different department to the "Education Store" and you can only access it from your Uni's LAN, usually through the IT dept's webpages. Here's a quote:

"10.1.1 All Apple-branded desktop and portable computer products shall be subject to a 36 calendar month warranty period commencing from the date of delivery."

Note that, unlike Applecare, there's no telephone support, though.

I think that might be out of date.

I quote from Apple's HE page: "Special first-year warranty and support package as standard".

You only get a discount on AppleCare, no 3 year warranty is thrown in.

Another quote: "Additional discount when AppleCare Protection Plan is purchased at the same time as systems".

If you can prove different I'd be very interested as I have two sisters both working in education who want new laptops, and unless I intervene they'll buy some horrendous Dell or clone PC!

keyboard

How's the keyboard?
