My daughter, being the emo kid that she vehemently denies she is, will have to have the black version for college this fall. I wonder is she'll want to cover the difference?

A very nice release, Apple. Solid spec's for an entry notebook.

Keyboard...

Watch out before blind-buying.

The new iBooks have a different keyboard technology. I'd try before buying....

Here's a link that provides a full comparision. Very nice spec compared to the MacBook Pro. There must be a speed bump around the corner. :)

http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/images/comparison_chart.html

Thanks for the link...the ONLY relevant thing missing is the GPU, as well as the fact that the MB is a bit heavier than the iBook...other than that it's an AWESOME machine.

This is gonna sell like hot cakes, really.

Its nice to see that they didnt cripple the processor speed to separate from the Pro but kept it down in other ways that many users wouldnt really notice (ie integrated graphics) AND still managed to keep the entry level at a reasonable price. But I can't really see the justification in charging more just because the case is black...

also, the new keyboard design looks interesting, have to head over to the apple store once they are in and see these things for myself.

Check out the new keyboard...

Keys seem slightly more rounded on the edges. Plus, look at the arrow keys on the bottom right. That's all new, no?

Anyone notice battery life?

79% brighter screen!!

Hooray, now I'll be able to see my reflection really clearly in the glossy screen.

Nah, it's a top-notch machine. The price is a little higher, but not too bad, can't wait to get a proper look at one and try out the integrity of that magnetic latch.

Hmmm.... this little guy might be taking an accidental tumble.....no just kidding, he's "retro cool" now. :D :D

i don't mind if this is the 12 inch pbook replacement, as long as it has dvi out and screen spanning. The should have made it in silver/aluminum too though. And charging more for the black one, i'm not down with that. Are the HD upgrades 7200 rpm? When do you think they'll be in stores?

Anyone got the UK store back up yet? I want to buy one!:(

Up and running. £749 is a very good price, too. Nay, excellent ... but shows up the MacBook Pros slightly. Updates must be round the corner :)

These look very nice from the pictures, one of the nicest laptops I have seen.

Integrated graphics are to be expected and fine on these machines. An all core-duo line-up more than makes up for that.

No modem, though? On a laptop? I know we are moving to a broadband / wireless world but omitting a modem on this level of computers is really corner cutting.

Like others, the premium on the black version confuses me? If there was anything special, surely Apple would make a little song and dance about it. Maybe it is hidden in the tech-specs somewhere.

I know I have been advocating waiting for Merom. But meanwhile, this is a great new Mac for those who need one right away and/or don't want to wait any longer. I do think the premium price for Black is unwarranted. Does it really cost $150 more to make it that color?   :(
My red minivan cost $175 for the color. Only $25 more to color a whole van than a laptop computer. So to answer your question -- no. :)

As for your proposal to wait for Merom, Multi, all is forgiven on a day like today. ;) :D

I gotta pay $19 if I want to use external monitor!
If that's your biggest complaint, then, well, I, ur ... uh ... don't know what to say.

Since no speed is mentioned, and they go to 120GB, they most certainly are all 5400rpm.

Custom configured said 1-5 business days, so my guess is they will be available at Apple Stores TODAY. I am going to mine sometime before 10AM so will let you know.

Yeah the KB seems good, well I don't know....

Apple.com provides al the info you need, why don't you give it a try

Work Longer Unplugged
MacBook offers up to 6 hours of battery life. (2.5 hours of DVD playback, 3.5 hours with wireless turned on.) Here’s how to squeeze out every last second of battery power when you need it.

Yes sir. Thank you very much. Thus endeth the era of Macs without Spanning or Extended Desktop capability.

This is way more like a Junior PowerBook than it is a Senior iBook. It has all the features of the 15" Powerbook less Expresscard/34, Dual DVI 30" Monitor Support and of course a lower resolution screen. But it represents a tremendous value for the sub $2k market.

As another poster said, black for Apple is sex appeal...and people will be willing to pay for it, given the crazy demand for black Nanos...

My only gripe is that, for the top-end users, we could have a BTO choice of dedicated graphics...but if you look at the comparison with the MBP, this is the only relevant thing missing...the rest is almost equal to a MBP...GO APPLE!

The RAM slots must be on the bottom so there's no need now to remove the keyboard. HOORAY!!! It looks like it sealed so no more dust and crap getting down there and no more interfering keyboard ribbon making the space bar total crap.

Black price is a test?

Anyone think the price for the black unit ($150 premium over HD upgrade alone) is a test? It's not supposed to ship for a few days after the white one.

Maybe Apple is using it as a test to see how much people complain about it? If there's an uproar, maybe they'll decrease the price before it ships, or add a feature (more RAM or something)???

The MacBook web site looks like it's not finished (clicking on a link for the Glossy Screen brings you to a page that doesn't even mention the glossy screen!).

So maybe there's something else lurking in the black model if people complain enough?

I am so impressed. Fantastic price point. I am so going to buy one.

Cool points:

- Now supports DVI (that means Cinema Display!)
- Now has closed-lid mode.
- Gigabit Ethernet.
- Digital audio in & audio out.
- Ligher and slimmer than the iBookG4 14''.
- Way better resolution.
- Glossy display (WOW)
- Core Duo 1.83!!!
- Black model - so cool
- Gorgeous price
- 6 hour battery life
- 2 DIMMS instead of soldered memory
- Ships in 1-5 days! :D
- No latch (WOW)
- FrontRow+iSight+MagSafe
- Be-a-u-ti-ful design.
- Keeps FireWire
- New, firmer keyboard
- Bigger trackpad

Only bad spots:

- No dedicated graphic card as extra
- No superdrive in the lower model (expected)

I want one. I want one. I want one!

Besides the black carrying a $150 premium (once you account for HD size), it looks awesome.

Of course, I shelled out the extra money.

I dont know if this has been said yet, but the macbook pro has a glossy screen option now. I wonder how it looks in person, I personally dont care for the mirror look.

I'd like to announce that I have successfully converted my sisters boyfriend from PC over to Mac, and that he will be picking one of these up as soon as they are availble via retail stores.

Nope... it's disguised as that, but its really for getting it in black. And you know what? People who really want their Macbook in black will pay up the extra money no matter how much we complain in these forums. Apple created a huge sex appeal with that black notebook, and sex pays.
I wouldn't say that APPLE created the sex appeal with the black. I've seen plenty of these same slim type 'books in all black (and other colors) for a LOONNGG while. Apple (I love 'em) but they're just catching up, actually.
