Disappointed.. well mixed feelings actually

I've been waiting for this forever. I've got a PBG4-12" that I want to replace even though it's brand new, BUT...

The good: love the resolution in that size of screen - finally Apple puts enough pixels in a smaller amount of space

The bad: $200 for black is insulting considering this is Apple we're talking about - they've always been so good to me in the past, why become microsoft now? Pay extra for a plastic you have proven to me with my nano will scratch when breathed on? I think not. Sorry Apple, I love you, but I'm no sucker.

The ugly: integrated graphics is what killed this sale. I have been planning for over a month to buy the MB the moment it was released, but the integrated graphics just will not do - why would I downgrade from an ATI9200 to an Intel anything... maybe it's because I've owned intel cards in the past... I just cannot pay anything for an intel graphics chip - yuck.

MacBook Pro Screens!

Take note guys - MBPro now has BTO for glossy screens too!

"Choose the glossy widescreen display to make your graphics, photos, and videos appear with richer color and deeper blacks - great for watching DVD movies. If you prefer a display with anti-glare coating for a matte rather than glossy viewing experience, choose the standard widescreen display.

Both widescreen displays are significantly brighter than previous Apple notebooks. The 15-inch MacBook Pro is 67% brighter than the 15-inch PowerBook G4, and the 17-inch model is 36% brighter than the 17-inch PowerBook G4."

Pretty nice machines, I'm sure I'll order one pretty soon.

There is no way I would pay $150 more for the black one.

Also, there is no way I would get the black one until I was convinced it would be more scratch proof than the black iPods.

Shape of things to come?

No keynote, just a release and spec increase on the MBP. Still glad I didn't wait for mine, otherwise I would have had even more of an eye on Merom and never have ended up deciding when to buy. I like the specs of the MacBook, but a few things bother me, mainly the word "Glossy" on the screen. I personally think the displays on the PowerBooks and MacBook Pros have been the best screens around. Ignoring brightness, not too dull, no significant glare. Perfect.

Now complete?

I hope the family is not really complete. No 13" mac book pro? I know some people who will be very disappointed. The graphics capabilities of the macbook are just a little weak for many professionals...

Glossy screens is what we want!
Dont think anyone has mentioned this but on the MBP you can now choose between glossy or normal screen at no extra cost!

Nice touch

I'm so not happy with the Intel GMA, it's a stupid Intel curse! It's a downgrade from the previous iBook, in almost every manner.

I'd say that it's an upgrade from the old iBook, with the possible exception of the graphics. How about a wayyyy faster processor, higher RAM ceiling, iSight, higher-res screen, etc, etc.? Plus the cool black case

I just bought the low end white one.

Black is nice but it looks too much like a dell or IBM. Plus I think white is just alittle more upscale looking even though I love my black iPOD I still think white is an overall nice color for these products.

At last! Start the whining...

As the 12" PB has been dropped this must be the replacement for it too.

In that case how does the GMA950 compare to what was in the PB?

The 12" PowerBook has a GeForce FX5200/64MB. I wonder if the value of my 12" PowerBook just dropped (G4 vs Core Duo) or stayed the same (GPU).

Has anyone seen any benchmarks on the intergrated graphics chip. Other than that, I got everything I asked for! HORRRAAAY DVI out. Can't seen anything negative to say about this.:)

Have to say, I'm dissapointed. I was waiting for a PowerBook 12" replacement, but these macbooks dont seem to (quite) fit the bill... Especially the integrated graphics and plastic case (no Aluminium?! liked that)

ho hum. guess I'll have to lug a 15" MBP on my travels instead... or get a viao...

I rely heavily on my Vodafone Mobile Connect Card so that rules out all Apple laptops for me :(

Its a PCMCIA card, and I dont beleive they have plans to make them any different soon as most laptops still have PCMCIA slots

Gonna have to stick with my 15" PB (which I upgraded to from my 12" just for the PCMCIA slot)

I said in one of the other threads there wouldn't be a 12" PB.
The 12" had more in common with the ibook anyways. Now there is no g3-g4 difference, plus the graphics card supports extended display, and the black looks like a good old Powerbook of old, there is less need for a real 12" Powerbook. Basically the black one replaces it. yes, discrete graphics would be nice, but the GMA950 isn't so bad, unless you play games. It does Quartz Extreme, Core Image, 32 Bit colour and display spanning, so its well featured and powerful enough for all the stuff most non-gaming Mac users need it for.

Pitty black wasn't an option on the low end as I quite fancied a black one, but really need the spec of the baby one.

Anyone think the price for the black unit ($150 premium over HD upgrade alone) is a test? It's not supposed to ship for a few days after the white one.

Maybe Apple is using it as a test to see how much people complain about it? If there's an uproar, maybe they'll decrease the price before it ships, or add a feature (more RAM or something)???

The MacBook web site looks like it's not finished (clicking on a link for the Glossy Screen brings you to a page that doesn't even mention the glossy screen!).

So maybe there's something else lurking in the black model if people complain enough?

Nah.....Apple has done this in the past with the iMac's....people will pay don't worry :p

Im not really sure about how I feel about the glossy screens, my mom's HP laptop has one and it certainly has a problem with glare in certain lighting. But when using it in perfect conditions I guess it is pretty nice.

Anyone currently using a glossy screen laptop?? How do you like it?
