For those people saying "Apple is White, Dell is Black", let me give my own perspective. As my name indicates, I am not currently a mac user, but I am so fed up with windows that I am ready to switch. Mac folks (especially people considering becoming Mac folks) take a lot of guff out in the real PC using world. The fact that you can get a Dell look-alike and yet be far superior than your PC counterparts is very much appealing in my book. You don't stand out right away, thus you don't draw the immediate jabs, comments, or other ridicule. You have time to show all the Mac-Haters exactly why Macs are so great without defending yourself (and your "silly looking white laptop") from the get-go.

This is not the only reason to get the black MacBook, but it is likely one reason for many, and it will be a great selling point for those of us who WANT a Mac but don't have the history or knowledge of the OS (other than that it's superior) to defend our choice.

Upgrading the hard drive in the MacBook is as easy as installing the RAM.

You don't have to take the MacBook apart like you do previous iBook/Powerbook/MBP models.

When you remove the battery and the cover over the memory/HD, you simply pull the white tab attached to the drive caddy and the hard drive slides right out through the battery compartment (since it is SATA, no cables or nothing). Then you just remove the four T-8 screws of the drive caddy, put the drive caddy on your new HD, and then slide your new drive right in. Easy as pie...

So is this now a "User installable part" or whatever they call it? Since it's ridiculously easy, I'd imagine your still under warranty if you change the harddrive?

It's been on my lap for almost 2 hours now, charging. It is a little warm, but it is not loud at all. I can hear my PowerBook's fan whirring across the room, and so far, my MacBook is silent. The heat is nowhere as intense as my Superdrive G4 PowerBooks, but it's definately a little toasty under the mag-safe connector.

If people are really dying to see WOW numbers I can fire it up later this evening and do some informal (subjective) testing. I'll make a new thread if I do this.
Thanks a lot for answering those questions.

I, too, would love some informal WoW info this evening or when you find the time. No need for anything more scientific than "lags/doesn't lag in big cities", "works with setting X but not Y". ;)

I'm willing to bet every single person here knocking the glossy screen has never used one. Yes, the things will produce more glare when viewing from an angle and/or when the computer is off, but when you are using it, so far it appears to produce an excellent image. According to what I have read, the glossy screen makes images brighter and better looking. I don't see any problem with mine so far. So ... don't knock it until you have tried it!!!

And for everyone whining about integrated graphics, sure, a Radeon X1600 would have been nice, but know that you are getting longer battery life AND less heat with the integrated graphics. (and lower price) Just be sure to put 2GB in your computer and integrated graphics shouldn't be an issue (not from Apple, I got 2GB for $140 -- Apple wants $500 plus they keep your 2 x 256MB!)
thanks for the update on installing a HD. it's so nice that we don't have to pry open the casing to install a HD anymore...can you tell us how long it took for you to complete the HD install? thanks.

hahahah is macosrumors SERIOUS????!!

"According to reliable Apple sources, the iBook is not a defunct product line as some have suggested....instead, it will eventually take over the low end laptop market starting as low as $799 with Core Solo processors and a 12-inch 4:3 display; details to follow!"

....wow they really HAVE lost it:D

why should apple do this? they certainly could, but they shouldn't have to. they produce a certain product and people buy it for various reasons...if it doesn't meet up to the needs/wants of a certain buyer, they don't buy it. if you don't like the options apple provides, don't buy it. but to say that apple should do what you want them to do...ridiculous.

I don't see why this is any more ridiculous than the complaint about the integrated graphics or indeed any other request that Apple be responsive to customer demands. After all, these are perfectly reasonable things to expect and no one is asking for a lilac-coloured computer with whistles hanging from the screen.

I thought iLife costs $50 extra when building the laptop, but I checked again, and it's only to have it preinstalled ... that's crazy *laughs*

And yes, you can use the Macbook in clamshell mode.

What are you talking about?

There is no $50 charge for having iLife pre-installed. It's not even an option. You get iLife pre-installed on all Macs for the cost of the Mac.

Whatever

cheers jxwolf, very helpful comments.

Just how bad does the glossy white ibook scratch? Never had one myself...

Is it just if you don't look after it, or unavoidable?

its not bad if you are not carful, then you will have problems i have had 4 ibooks and none were sratched, had a powerpook and a phone in my ear phone dropped and dented powerbook

What a fantastic little machine, and certainly a very, very worthy update for the iBooks.

If I hadn't needed the bigger screen and just that little bit more umpf, then I'd have ditched the MBP and got this.

Aside from the few who still yearn for a 13" MBP, Apple have got everything pretty much spot on.

Just the Mac Pros to go then...Gotta be a new box design for these, surely?

One question on the iBooks - the keyboard on them looks almost like a membrane, rather than proper keys? I am wrong aren't I?

Hope so!

I guess we can all say goodbye to this idea:

That would've been awesome, but then again it doesn't exist, and never will.

I like white ,you buy black all good to me

I'm awesomely happy over this release - prefect laptop for my needs. Now I just need to save the $1,800 for my black 2GHz CD. Hopefully in about 2 months or so, I'll be able to place an order. Or, I could go ahead and sell my TiBook (which I just bought a new battery for last night - d'oh!) and G3, and a bunch of other stuff so I could buy sooner. :D

I like the specs a lot, and the black is a welcome return (last seen on Pismo, correct?). I still wish Apple would lower all of it's prices by about $100 on every one of their desktops and laptops just to be a tad more competitive, but whatever, it doesn't both me all that much. The new keyboard looks nice, and hopefully the finish on both models proves more durable.

Can anyone post an image of the back of a screen on a black model? I've been unable to locate one. I'm wondering what color the Apple is when not illuminated.

Merom MacBook By November Is My Guess

jbrannan said:
I apologize if this was covered in the previous 50 pages of posts.

Does anyone think Apple will move quickly to the Merom processors when they are released or will Apple release new product lines for the 64-bit processors?

I'd like to wait for the 64-bit with Vista coming (someday) since I need dual-booting.

Any thoughts on that?

Exciting news about the MacBook - this is the laptop I've been waiting for to chunk my Dell.
Covered a lot above and in the Core 2 Duo Thread.

My GUESS is Merom will be in MacBooks by November - about 6 months from now. They ship in three months. Will go into MBP, iMac and mini first. Then into MacBooks last. Meanwhile the Mac Pros will sport 4 core Woodcrest Core 2 Duo pairs as well as Conroe Core 2 Duo singles this summer.

No, you're wrong.

Apple may do whatever they please. You just don't buy their product. It can't be more clear cut.

I'd rather use a Dell then go with Intel graphics on a Mac. Or sever a pinky finger. In any case Intel graphics == cheap crap. So much for Apple quality but we've all been over this topic with the Mini haven't we? Still. Its painful to see Apple go down this road.

If you're buying a machine for gaming, you have to pay for it. The rest of us who are doing work are fine with saving a little money.

Great specs for an entry level machine, this is likely to be a massive improvement for any iBook owner trading up. My concern though is the shared graphics memory again, 512MB - Shared memory - Rosetta overhead = not enough, I reckon a RAM upgrade is near mandatory on these machines.

You're absolutely right, these machines will need a gig to run well. But it's not just the shared memory, I'd say ANY intel mac should have a gig or more.

They should probably offer the glossy screen as an option for the macbook just as they're doing for the MBP. It makes sense.

Crap

No ExpressCard slot to put in upcoming EVDO card?! How else to do it? My EVDO phone has no tethering and bluetooth doesn't work that great right? Certainly a direct card/interface to the comp is more reliable. How can they miss that certianly they have room to put in the big ass frame of the macbook, i dont' care if its thin, its freaking heavy! And the black one looks like it is a white one SPRAY PAINTED messily with a matte black, they need to have had a "PIANO LAQUER BLACK" version that LG and some others are making yea like a glossy ipod black but not so plasticky, just a high quality classy black, cmon

Yes, I'm a complete noob. What's so bad about integrated graphics? Can someone explain?

I'm not techie, but integrated graphics means it relies on your computer's RAM, where dedicated graphics has its own RAM. Basically, it's stealing resources from your computer rather than bringing its own.

You won't be saying that again once you discover that you can't plug in a regular microphone. You'll be paying extra bucks to get your iChat working. Evenmore since there is no built in microphone. May I point out to all prospective buyers of the macbook the following product: SL-8850 UltraPortable Audio Card USB. It is about €/$14.

Stop spreading FUD. The inputs are optical/analog combination ports like those available on minidisc recorders for some time. It isn't a microphone level input, it's a line level input, but it will be fine. And of course there's a built in microphone, what use is an iSight with no sound!

I'm a bit disappointed in the graphics card on the macbook's. I would have liked to see the supported res of 1680x1050 on the macbook. I was really wanting to purchase a macbook (which I would right now) but a 64mb intel graphics card that only supports 1280x800 is outright crap.

I wanted this 13.3" wide screen over the 15.4" as 15.4" is to big to lug around and I wanted something smaller. BLAH! Guess I'll stick to my windows laptop for now.
