I posted previously it is soldered -- I didn't completely remove the keyboard but when I lifted the left side I didn't see a socket.
Thanks for reply! Just too many posts. Too bad it's not socketed, otherwise I could drop a Merom in later.

I dont know which one to order!!!

Guys I need some advice. I want something powerful. I've been using a G4 iBook for the last 10 months, the 1.33 12" and I find the G4 dog slow so a Duo would be more than welcome! The 1GB RAM is ok, but sometimes I do hear churring of the disk which is annoying, considering the disk is very slow (4200rpms)..

The iBook was my first Mac, now I can move to something more chique!:D

Bearing in mind:

1. ATM my hard drive usage is around 42GB, I have 18GB Free.
2. I plan to stick Vista on this baby in the future so I don't know if a 60GB would be enough for me
3. I need to use 'Power Hungry' stuff like Garageband/iWeb which crawl on the iBook.
4.I get 3 years guarantee with the notebooks as I am a Uni Undergrade, (Under H/E Nat Agreement). So I will probably keep this for 3 years as its not as unbearable to use a Core Duo as it is a G4 (plus windows capability etc.)

Which would you recommend me buy and why?

Here are the models (both custom built on Apple):

1.83Ghz Core Duo/1GB RAM/80GB HDD/Combo Drive £737/$1387
2.0Ghz Core Duo/1GB/80GB HDD/Super Drive £865.82/$1628

Omni via ramseeker.com is $144 for a pair of 1GB sticks. You need to click on the PRICE that will send you to OMni to buy at that price. :p

Thats the same place I bought mine. They're not too good about letting you know the status of your order, tho. I received my RAM and the online status was still saying "pending shipment".

Well, it was worth it to save the $. Lifetime warranty is included, the RAM tested out fine under Apple Hardware Test. I'd buy from them again if I was getting a MacBook tomorrow.

How 'bout "painting" one a different color with a Sharpie? :p

Yeah, at the moment one of them has a label attached, but most of the time the brick part of the adapter is under the sofa so labelling/colouring it doesn't resolve the problem.

No ExpressCard slot to put in upcoming EVDO card?! How else to do it? My EVDO phone has no tethering and bluetooth doesn't work that great right? Certainly a direct card/interface to the comp is more reliable. How can they miss that certianly they have room to put in the big ass frame of the macbook, i dont' care if its thin, its freaking heavy! And the black one looks like it is a white one SPRAY PAINTED messily with a matte black, they need to have had a "PIANO LAQUER BLACK" version that LG and some others are making yea like a glossy ipod black but not so plasticky, just a high quality classy black, cmon
chill out, dude. they didn't "miss it"...not many people use EVDO with their phones via BT so why would apple increase the price of the MB by including it in there? ibooks never had a PCI card slot so i don't see why they would put one in the MB. if you want a slot, you'll have to go to the MP Pro. i use EVDO with my motorola e815 via bluetooth and it works perfectly fine, so you've probably never used BT on a mac.

That's it - I'm selling my G4 iBook and getting one of these suckers. I've never been more aroused by apple gear... !!

hahaha, okay - uh

Someone said it's not a good idea to have, say, a 256mb chip and a 1gb chip of ram running together - why is that?? I wanna have a gig in it, but apple charges a lot more than what it'd cost to buy 1 gb chip. Plus, I don't want two 512s..

why does that keyboard remind me of an old ZX Spectrum?!?!?

It does not look pretty and why the hell charge $200 extra for a paint job and 20Gb extra on the HD.

I am seriously thinking of jumping back to an HP laptop... These aren't worth the hassles.

I thibk you may use the 85W on the Macbook too.

Yes, that is probably true. (It certainly is true for that you can use a 65W adapter for an AlBook or a TiBook.) The problem arrises that using the 60W adapter from the Mac Book with a Mac Book Pro is likely to burn out the adapter.

I'm a bit disappointed in the graphics card on the macbook's. I would have liked to see the supported res of 1680x1050 on the macbook. I was really wanting to purchase a macbook (which I would right now) but a 64mb intel graphics card that only supports 1280x800 is outright crap.

I wanted this 13.3" wide screen over the 15.4" as 15.4" is to big to lug around and I wanted something smaller. BLAH! Guess I'll stick to my windows laptop for now.

If you look at the dimensions of the new MacBook, you'll see that its nearly 2 inches wider than the old 12" Powerbook! (Yeah I saw a pic of a fellow with a ruler showing the size - PB on top of MB.) I'm thinking that the dimensions are going to be quite close to a 15 inch PB/MBP.

I can only hope that this hints at an Apple subnote/tablet.

Is this memory compatible with the machine, I know the specs are ok but aren't graphics cards that share memory very particular about the type of RAM?

Works just fine in my intel mini which has the same integrated graphics as the new MacBook.

Barefeats tests show dual channel is a marketing myth with only a 4% best increase in performance. Don't bother worrying about mismatched sizes.
It all depends on applications. I think games benefit a lot from dual channel.

<sarcasm> yes trading 3D benchmarks for up to 6 hours battery life must be a mistake, this is a small portable with a small screen, what must they have been thinking! </sarcasm>

Rest of the specs look great, but the integrated video is a mistake. I don't feel like I've missed out by already having an iBook.

Just how bad does the glossy white ibook scratch? Never had one myself...

Is it just if you don't look after it, or unavoidable?
My white iBook G4 is about 3 years old, and it's been through quite a lot. Used outdoors, had people rest things on it, been jammed into bags with random other pieces and parts, and so on.

If I look at it closely (say from one foot away under good light) it is completely covered with little scratches - they are as numerous as the lines on the back of your hand. From farther away, without the light shining directly on it, the scratches are pretty much invisible. When it's clean (i.e., not now), it still looks shiny and new as far as you could tell from a normal distance.

Integrated whatever

A quick question for anyone that can help. If I have no interest in playing games, what other applications will be hindered by integrated graphics? Where will a macbook pro really outperform a macbook?

The best combination value/manual upgrade?

So from what I gather, is the white 2.0 the best value, if I plan on doing my own RAM and HD upgrade, i mean wouldn't that be way cheaper than apple's upgraded components plus the price reflect where you don't keep the spec'ed comoponents?! If i could get 2GB RAM like some people mentioned for a lil over 100 how much are the high RPM 100+GB HDs that are compatible with the MB, are there any differences performance wise/warranty/quality of upgraded components or even weight of the cheaper DIY components than apple's Thanks

Where is Apple going to get a 12 or 13" screen with a resolution of 1680x1050?

In terms of the *graphics card*, it supports a max resolution of 1920x1200. You know that, right? You can power a wide variety of external displays at higher resolutions than the internal one.

The Macbook Pro should outperform the Macbook in everything.

Thanks a bunch! Looks very classy in my opinion - similar to the stunning G3 'Books of yore.
