i'm posting from the arden fair store in sacramento...

just saw both macbooks and they look "weird"...not bad weird, just different. the keyboard needs some getting used to, but it types fine. the white is almost too white, but the black is kinda nice up close, actually...the contrast with the white apple logo is really nice. but, i'm getting a white one anyway.

they're out of white 2.0 models at this store, so look elsewhere...

It would have been better had Apple included an ExpressCard/34 slot so that the user could install an internal modem instead of carrying a dongle. A dongle is okay conceptually until you actually have to practice carrying it around with you.
place dongle in bag...or place in pocket. not very difficult. apple had to cut some things out and the modem had to go.

I wanted black in SF. My cousin is there. And you have white sold out?

How far is Sacramento from San Francisco by the way?

For those who are still tempted by the BlackBook

I honestly don't understand why people think the black version is attractive, let alone worth a $150 premium. You need to stop looking at the glamour shots on the Apple site and take a look at some real user pics.

Honestly, if a week ago you saw something like this

would you have even given it a second look?
(If you couldn't tell at once, yes, that is indeed the black MacBook)

Underwhelmed by the GPU, the RAM and the fact that if I want to top model I have to have it in black. I like white. Why the hell can't I get the top model in white? That just plain sucks. No MacBook for me.

Umm, what the difference between the 2.0 White with an 80 GB BTO and the black? Other than the color and price tag?

Did you do the Photoshop work? :D

Very nice :)

I think i will buy one, my first mac.
But i have to ask:
Will photoshop run great on it (rosetta).
do you think i can run cad program like solidworks in bootcamp.

Thanks :D

I wouldn't expect SolidWorks to work well on a machine with integrated graphics. We've tried that (albeit on machines with less graphics memory and slower CPUs) and it simply didn't work out. You'd be better off with the MacBook Pro. I would expect it to work fine in BootCamp, but you'll have to buy a copy of Windows.

Photoshop will not run "great" on Rosetta, but should be acceptable unless you're working in a professional graphics shop.

You cheaply sprayed an iBook black and then stuck a Dell sticker on?

I would never buy the black one. The white looks more sleek and Apple like.

I've been embracing neo-Luddism in my refusal to replace my Pismo PowerBook (now 6 years old). It's black and it looks plenty Apple-like to me. And still works well, all things considered - it gets my vote for one of the all-time best Macs.

I like the black MB. I think of it as great-grandson-of-Pismo. This might be the year to give the Pismo a rest, if only so I can take a photo of the two machines side by side... But I'm worried that an MB might not give me 6 years if I decide to be stubborn again.

Covered a lot above and in the Core 2 Duo Thread.

My GUESS is Merom will be in MacBooks by November - about 6 months from now. They ship in three months. Will go into MBP, iMac and mini first. Then into MacBooks last. Meanwhile the Mac Pros will sport 4 core Woodcrest Core 2 Duo pairs as well as Conroe Core 2 Duo singles this summer.

I know I shared your feeling about the Merom, but I have to tell you that as I sit here typing on a white MB with 2GB or RAM, these are the most exciting portables that Apple has made in some time. Sure, the don't have the graphics power of a MacBook Pro, but side by side in the Apple Store on Regent Street, the MBP just looked old and rather plain whereas the MB was graceful and elegant. As for performance, it is really fantastic for doing what most of us do everyday. Running Windows, Office, Firefox, Skype and Entourage, along with some widgets, this things purrs. While we are both familiar with the benefits that the Merom will bring over time, I think that this machine will have quite a lengthy and productive life. I do wish it had a socketed CPU, but I really can't find anything to complain about in terms of the user experience here. A great notebook at a great price. Thoroughly satisfied, and I am one picky customer.

Thanx a lot. I need a few more posts like this to make me feel better. I really wanted the black one.Had the money too. But I can get the white only in SF. I either buy it today. Or i`ll be forced to wait two/three months before they hit INDIAN shores.

But I really wanted the Black one.:(
ALLRIGHT. I need a couple more posts like this. Lie if you have to. But say it`s not better than white:eek:

Color

Now I will say right now that I have not seen it in real life yet, but why does the black MacBook look like a G3 Powerbook, it's not shiny or eye catching like the black iPod is.

Isn't there some kind of consumer protection law that protects us from stuff like charging $200 more for a black plastic case?

So I guess we just put up with Apple doing that to us right?

For those unwilling to pay the premium, or whose store has sold out of black... I've got a tin of paint and will happily do the deed for just $99.

(Now that's what I call a better 'bang-to-buck' ratio.)

:D

Doesn't anyone else think the matte finish is better than the gloss? I expect any light scratches not to show up on the black one as it would on the white (unless you talking about deep scratches where you'll more likely see an unsightly white line).

I'm not too sure which would be the better colour for me. White to match my iMac, or black to contrast white/indoors black/outdoors?

What the He**?

Apple can charge you as much as they want for whatever they want. That's called free market, my friend. They sell, you buy. If you don't like it, then don't buy. ;)

Again, the reason is simple. There's an extra cost in keeping two stock lines of different casings. Apple chose to put that extra cost on black models, to keep the traditional white model at a low price. This way, we white iBookers will have a replacement at a very reasonable price, whilst black MacBook lovers will have to cope with the extra cost of their demand. ;)

Sounds fair to me. ;)

A small Apple Store question?

Yeah so I was planning on purchasing a MACBOOK in July, cause that is when I would be in the states, but I really want it with 1Gig of RAM (I use photoshop alot, etc.).

Now normally you guys would purchase it online and you could configure it to how you want it, but since I do not live in the US and there is not an Apple Store where I live (I live in the carribean, has it positives and negatives), I will be purchasing it at an Apple Store.

So my question is, will I be able to walk in an Apple Store and ask for a Macbook but with the upgrade to 1gig of RAM?

Thanks In advance all!

But why not? I seems to me that a glossy finish would look really good!

I don't know.... I guess there is some reason, still like 'em though.

And for all you people complaining about integrated graphics...get a MBP or an iMac. Heck Apple's not going to loose money just so you can play 3D games on an $1100 machine!

Yes, I quickly Photoshopped a Dell logo on a black MacBook picture I found in some blog. FWIW, there's also a picture of a real $499 Inspiron 1000 here.

Integrated graphics has absolutely ZERO to do with CAD applications. The reason it didn't work out is probably because they were under-equipped in other departments.
