Brillliant (NOT)

Just check out the reflection of the camera flash on the crappy gloss-screen.

Very like the reflection on the screen of current non-glossy PowerBooks and iBooks if you shoot the picture with on-camera flash.

With an ice cream truck you are concerned about heat that comes from the outside, that is, from the sun. That is not really relevant here.

With the MacBook you are talking about heat that comes from the inside. It has nowhere to escape but through the computer's shell, so that heat is coming out anyway no matter what colour it is.

The difference is that black radiates heat better, so it will be able to shed the heat into the surrounding air faster than a white one could.

Aah yes, my bad...

But before you buy a black one, just go down and check them out. I was willing to shell out the extra $200 for black, but when I saw them I was disappointed. They did not look sleek like the iPods did. I saved the money and bought a white one instead -- which I think look more sleek than ever, especially since they are now so much thinner and wider.

I would never buy the black one. The white looks more sleek and Apple like. As soon as my mom says I'm ordering the White 2.0 from MacMall.com. I just talked to someone from MacMall, though, and they're not supposed to get them until May 26th. I'm going to die having to wait so long! :( :D

Underwhelmed by the GPU, the RAM and the fact that if I want to top model I have to have it in black. I like white. Why the hell can't I get the top model in white? That just plain sucks. No MacBook for me.

Go check the online store.

Order the top white model with maxed out memory and hard drive.

It will cost you about $150 less than the black with the same specs.

You're welcome.

Are they shipping in quantity? Can you buy another laptop with a merom chip today?

If either of those is a no, it's ridiculous to expect to see them in macs just yet.

Sorry, I am thinking of buying a Leopard iMac (I said it somewhere before) so I'm really talking about Septemberish ... (No new OS, no new Mac for me, got my iBook on August).

What the iMac should get RIGHT NOW is a regular update:
the speed bump of the MB Pros (2 and 2.x) and the VRAM in the 20'' should be 256 MB as in the MB Pro (do not know if this is really useful).

Bf2

Does anyone know if these MB's will come anywhere close to being able to play Battlefield 2? Its the only game I would really care to play, having played it at my bros house.

Modems are still needed

You can get a modem dongle if you really need it. Most users these days have no use for one.

It would have been better had Apple included an ExpressCard/34 slot so that the user could install an internal modem instead of carrying a dongle. A dongle is okay conceptually until you actually have to practice carrying it around with you.

Black absorbes heat, white reflects. That's why the icecream truck is white.

Does anyone know how an app like Vue or Bryce would perform on a integrated graphics card? Does it matter if I have of have not a dedicated card, and if yes, how much?

I'm torn between a 17" iMac and the 2Ghz MacBook...

I know from Bryce it hardly uses the GPU. The thing is, once you hit the render button in any 3D renering app, the GPU does nothing more than merely show you what the processor has done. The only thing the graphics card is really used is for life preview. So I guess it renders pretty fast on a Core duo, but you might have problems flying around in very complex 3D scenes.

PS: iMac SMC Firmware-Update 1.0? W00t?

PPS: Wow, those iMacs can be loud. When updating the firmware, the fans kicked in for a few seconds. Makes a sound like a hair dryer! Nearly knocked me off my chair!

I'm thinking most likely not. That game in particular is resource hungry, especially in the GPU department. While I haven't fired up any modern games on my new MacBook yet (WoW), I wouldn't count on stellar performance. My best guess is something around 10-20fps with minimum detail settings, which is totally unacceptable for many FPS players.

I took a look at the MacBook at my local Apple store (Austin, TX). It looks nice, but I don't like the keyboard. It has a very odd feeling. There's a large spacer between each key.

I don't know why they changed the keyboard.

No more Freescale for Apple. So much for this agreement that lasts until the end of 2008:

CNet provides an interview with Michel Mayer, CEO of Freescale Semiconductor. Freescale is the Motorola spin-off which provides Apple with the PowerPC G4 processor used in the Mac Mini and current Mac Laptops. Apple has a contract with Freescale to fulfill G4 processor orders until as late as Dec 31, 2008 if required. (Apple is under no obligation to continue purchasing them through that time, however.)

The interview provides some confirmation of Apple's earlier consideration to move to Intel.

"In my previous job, I ran IBM's semiconductor business. So I've seen both sides of the Apple story, because I sold the G5 to Steve (Jobs) the first time he wanted to move to Intel."

This information was previously revealed in an internal IBM newsletter about Apple's potential switch to Intel at that time. Instead, Apple went forward with the PowerPC 970 (G5).

Meanwhile, Mayer goes on to say that IBM's focus has shifted to consoles:

"IBM decided not to take the G5 into the laptop and decided to really focus its chip business on the game consoles."

Aperture runs OK

According to information given by Aperture's Senior Product Manager, Joe Schorr, Aperture runs OK in the new MacBooks, though "unsupported" (that means no support from AppleCare in the using of the app). Check the Official Support Forums for Aperture:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=482808&tstart=0

Kudos to Apple! What is more, every Intel Mac mini owner can now install Aperture 1.1 with no need for any hack. Unsupported too, but it runs ok! :D

Specs

Take a chill pill. Many readers are reporting no Mic! There is a mic.

Audio
Built-in stereo speakers
Built-in omnidirectional microphone
Combined optical digital audio input/audio line in (minijack)
Combined optical digital audio output/headphone out (minijack)

That was actually what I was expecting to be the answer, but had to be sure. As for live preview, Vue uses OpenGL for that, so I guess I'm covered with that??

I think the $150 difference for a paint job is a little much. It only cost $50 to upgrade a white one to the same specs so why the extra flow for a black one?

Well actually comparing "paint job" is not really that simple. The "job" itself might be more or less the same but every single pigment has certain characteristic, as has the formulation, so if you like to have a special e.g. shade/dullness, resistance to weathering etc. you easily spend 10 to 100 times more then for that simple black pigment which you can buy in your little arts and crafts store around the corner - but this of course might not necessarily be the reason here...

that is my thing, it only has an 80GB HDD as extra on it from what i can tell.

Why isn 't the black iPods more if the black macbook is more

China didn't start buying up the world's supply of black plastic until last Tuesday.
