ExpressCard/34

Yes sir. Thank you very much. Thus endeth the era of Macs without Spanning or Extended Desktop capability.

Finally. Very Good Apple!

This is way more like a Junior PowerBook than it is a Senior iBook. It has all the features of the 15" Powerbook less Expresscard/34, Dual DVI 30" Monitor Support and of course a lower resolution screen but 800 pixels high which I was advocating here. It represents a tremendous value for the sub $2k market and the 13" size.

I am a bit disappointed here because the ExpressCard/34 slot is the only way to obtain a modem internally for all Apple laptops. I just don't get it. Throw away the modem--which I NEED--and keep the SVGA port.

MacBook Gamer?

Is it true apple has plans on releasing a "Gamer" version of the Macbook later this year? I think I would rather wait and see than buy one of these now.

I like the black... so sexy...
I would think that the graphics wouldn't bother me too much as mine is a radeon 9550 in my ibook.... the integrated would be better, provided enough memory is in the ibook...
now i just need money for this....

I'm wondering what you think about when the best time to buy the MacBook would be. I'll need it for university next year, starting in September and am anxious to get it. I dont really need it over the summer. Does apple work out bugs and silently fix them? Is it better to wait until I absolutely need it than to buy now just because I'm impatient..?

I'd wait if I was you. IF there are bugs and whatnot, you might get a rev. B when you buy one later this year I guess...

Merom is getting out early ...

Are they shipping in quantity? Can you buy another laptop with a merom chip today?

If either of those is a no, it's ridiculous to expect to see them in macs just yet.

Well,

I WARN the guys who r thinking the integrated graphics is OK. I have a ****** hp with the more ****** intel 915 128 mb card. U know u can only doo office work or play games of 1999.

Or do audio recording...or render movies...or watch HD video...or do photo work...

The only thing I can't do on my mini is recent, demanding 3d games. A 915 isn't even in the same ballpark.

GMA 950 is okay for now, but if anyone is thinking about running Vista with DX10 via BootCamp, they will have to wait for the GMA 965 chipset.

You have a source on this? I find it hard to believe that an OS shipping in less than a year won't run on machines that are brand new now.

Considering it's a rumor from macosrumors, who insisted the machines today would be ibooks...and now say that ibooks are still going to reappear...I'd say it's about as likely as seeing bigfoot and elvis holding hands in disneyworld.

Everybody's going gaga over black - but considering the heat issues with Apple Notebooks I wonder if maybe the white case might stay a little cooler ;)

Not according to physics. Although the black will absorb heat better than the white, it will similarly give heat off at a faster rate. However the difference on this scale and these heats would be negligible.

Ordering the basic 1.83 tomorrow for taking to Uni with me (ok so the semester is over now but I need the summer to break her in right? ;) ) and a 20" iMac for home (yay for late student loan applications!).

Probably going to give the MacBook only a gig of RAM as its not going to be used for the most demanding tasks. Only a bit of Garageband on the go and it runs fine on my old 1GHz G4 Tower with only a gig of RAM. Might stick in a 7200 RPM drive eventually. The iMac will be maxed out from the get go.

MacBook Gamer?

Apple has also bumped the processor speeds on its MacBook Pro models to 2.0GHz in the entry-level with almost all other versions now employing the top of the line 2.16GHz Core Duo T2600 CPU. This is in preparation for further efforts to distinguish the various Intel-based laptop lines with as many as five new models shipping in the year ahead under the iBook, MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Gamer and MacBook Thin brand names.

The changes will start when the MacBook Pro moves to the "Merom" Core2 Duo processor at 2.16 and 2.33GHz, soon moving to 2.4-2.6GHz. Power usage will be similar to existing Core Duo processors but performance will increase by as much as 35% at the same clock rates.

I'm sure u not going to able apply some of the imovies effects if u would it ll takeeeeee u so muchhh time.

I m not an antiapple. I would like to swith to mac but pro is expensive for me right now. and this macbook looks nice but in my opinion only fits to beginners
You haven't got a fecking clue what you're talking about mate. You can't compare some 2 year old GFX card to what's in the MacBook. The GMA 950 does CoreImage stuff just fine.

What are you talking about?

There is no $50 charge for having iLife pre-installed. It's not even an option. You get iLife pre-installed on all Macs for the cost of the Mac.

Whatever

The charge is for iWork, not iLife. iLife (iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, GarageBand, iWeb, plus the always-free iTunes) is free in new Macs, $79 for an upgrade on an old Mac (iTunes upgrades are, as I just said, always free as a download). iWork (Keynote and Pages) is $79 new or upgrade, and only comes with a new mac as a 30-day trial. However, you can get iWork preinstalled on a new Mac for $79 (perhaps the $50 is an education discount?).

Everyone seems to be getting the black ones. I guess Apple isn't too dumb. Make one black and mark it up like whoa. People gripe but people still buy.
Indeed. Everyone on this thread is going "OMG the black is teh rip off" but all the photos people are posting of bought MacBooks are black ones. Hilarious.

But before you buy a black one, just go down and check them out. I was willing to shell out the extra $200 for black, but when I saw them I was disappointed. They did not look sleek like the iPods did. I saved the money and bought a white one instead -- which I think look more sleek than ever, especially since they are now so much thinner and wider.

Black absorbes heat, white reflects. That's why the icecream truck is white.
With an ice cream truck you are concerned about heat that comes from the outside, that is, from the sun. That is not really relevant here.

With the MacBook you are talking about heat that comes from the inside. It has nowhere to escape but through the computer's shell, so that heat is coming out anyway no matter what colour it is.

The difference is that black radiates heat better, so it will be able to shed the heat into the surrounding air faster than a white one could.

Exactly. And those are the reasons why Apple won't get ahead even after the possible beneficial dual boot coup. They will have to keep marketing towards kids and pseudo creative types. This magnet stuff is dangerous to other devices like mechanical watches (that the pseudo creative types of course wouldn't wear).

Just how powerful do you think the magnet is?

wannabeconvert said:
Widescreen is for watching movies or what?

Movies and all sorts of online documents. Better the screen be high than wide; sideways scrolling is a lot worse than vertical.

And why would I want to buy a computer that can't connect to a wireless network other than WiFi and Bluetooth? That already kills these machines for any serious business user who happens to travel to other countries.

If you really *have* to have that capability, you need a different laptop.

Did you know that Apple makes one called the MacBook Pro?

Amazing but true!

wannabeconvert said:
That for example is one of the reasons why these people have to rely on unreliable Windows systems. And this is even more anoying since Apple is the actual hardware manufacturer and certainly should be able to build something that is a real alternative. But they decide not to do so and play to generation iPod instead. That pisses me off, because now I have to buy an IBM or some other Chinese piece of junk again just because that is all there is that actually does the job outside a dorm room.

This is easier than admitting that you're too cheap to pony up for a MacBook Pro, assuming that you actually do need some of the capabilities you claim.

What about the 95+% of laptop users who would actually be well served with a MacBook? You would rather have them pay for capability they would never use.

That, or you actually believe that every feature you want should be offered for $500.

I've had mine on my lap for over an hour, and I feel about the same heat as my G3, but much, much less than my fiancee's HP.
