Macbook Pro vs Macbook

Sorry I didn't read through all of the posts, but I am currently purchasing a MacBook Pro 17" and after reading the specs of the MacBook, I am having trouble justifying the cost. Someone please point me in the right direction.

does anyone know if you can get an educational discount at an apple store. and if so what documentation is needed? Will a student ID suffice?

All you need is your student ID to get the discount. They won't ask you though, so you have to speak up. Also, the discount only applies to Apple-brand products...just FYI. :)

It could use IIG to keep the price down, or it could be due to space concerns. If you look at how closely packed the Mac Mini is you can see why the GMA 950 was the choice--the reasoning behind including it in the MacBook may be similar.

The college crowd will be plenty happy with their purchase of the Wii in a few months, until then they have Boot Camp to play Spider Solitaire.

Good point. Maybe this was also part of the deal apple struck with intel to put their graphic chips in some machines. I would have payed a little more for real graphics.

Yea, I hear many people are gravitating to more console gaming, so your probably right on that account too.

Still, I'm someone who does a little of everything and the macbook just does'nt seem to fit that need. The MBP would be nice but thats $500-700 more not including extended warranty--that hurts (The bump in speed is nice though). For that amount of money I might have to forego the laptop and wait for intel pro desktops <sigh>.

I read something about GMA950 not being able to handle DirectX10 (DX10 is supposed to come with Windows Vista), is this true?

I mean, would I be able to run windows acceptably with this video card?

Gee, thanks I havent got that much money I'm afraid:eek: I was thinking to get 1GB now and a gig in a few months time to make it Dual. So thats £77.57 for a gig? Thats not bad...Does it mean I have to get another 1GB from Kingston with this config for Dual channel to work? (later on)

Well you always need to install in pairs. Although some motherboards will recognize and run with only one DIMM installed, I don't think the MB can do this. So you need 2x256mb (aka stock) or 2x512mb. 2x512mb could be good until you get more money. I would say do the 1 GB of total ram and wait for DDR2 prices to come down (which they certainly will).

Umm.....a user earlier in this thread said he was using Aperture and Final Cut Pro with no problems. I think it was Leemo.

Interesting and exciting product launched today guys...this is how I would have done it differently, would you have been happier with these models and why?

MacBook (White)

1.66CD/512MB/40GB/X1300 64MB/Combo/+Other stuff today $999
1.83CD/512MB/60GB/X1300 128MB/Super/+Other stuff today $1299

MacBook (Black, SE)

2.0CD/512MB/80GB/X1300 128MB/Super/+Other stuff today $1499

NB: All features the same 2x256MB Dual Config etc

Absolutely would have gone for it then. Even if you tacked on $100 more, I would go for it just for the addition of graphics card. I honestly believed that they would have a 1 low end with integrated graphics for people just wanting to wet their feet with a mac portable and 2 higher end models with 64mb graphics. I was sad when they didn't offer real graphics.

Really?! The Mini's motherboard can...I thought adding RAM not in pairs just reduces the bandwith to single channel:eek:

Loving this machine! The keyboard feels fantastic, I love typing with it!

Very impressed with the speed of the machine (2ghz white one) even though it's only got the standard 512mb of ram. Despite the ram Final Cut Pro runs very nicely, and I shall be sticking 2gb in at the earliest opportunity!

I wanted a nice notebook to replace my iMac, and this is going to do *very* nicely!

Pet Or IBM PC Jr. Chicklet Keys

I went to the Apple Store to check one out today, I'm slightly dissapointed my old case won't work with it. But the real dealbreaker for me is..

Has anyone else noticed that the Macbook has the keyboard from a Mattel Aquarius, complete with the (lack of) usability of the same?

I'm going to go back sometime later and try to type on when when the store is less crowded and see if it's as bad as I first thought, but I think it'll be MacBook Pro for me.
Anyone here old enough to remember the Commodore PET or IBM PC Jr. Chicklet keys? They remind me of these. I think it may kill the idea of a MacBook for me as well. But will have to try it in person to be sure.

I wonder who and why they greenlighted "Toy Keys" on a $1500 computer. Don't you?

yes, i used my educational discount, it's ony $100, but im glad to save $100 for something else like ram or what ever.

is that an integrated graphics chip?? no wonder they put those fast processors on there! guess they had to cut corners some where... i think we should start an uproar and force them to put a real graphics chip on there...

Could be! I'm saying I'm not sure. For ex; my current mobo (Asus P5WD2) can load 1 dimm. My older Dell piece PC could not.

Gigantic

Have you seen this beast? It's HUGE! It's thicker than a MacBook Pro, and just about 1/2 in narrower and less deep than the 15 in, too. For those of us hoping for a MacBook that a human can actually carry around, this is very disappointing

For someone who is going to be using GarageBand quite frequently (for music), and probably iDVD as well, is 1GB of RAM "enough"? I realize that RAM is important in multitasking.
Yeah I do lots of multitasking in my 1GB.

Why You Need A 17" MBP?

You want chicklet keys, no FW800 and a small res screen for final cut pro or what applications you getting it for? The MacBook will drive 1920 x 1200 and you could use an external keyboard at home. :)

Huge? Sure, compared to the MacBook Pro, but compare it to other consumer laptops on the market...

I would like a thinner aluminum version to replace the 12'' powerbook, though. There always seems to be something else that needs to come out!
