This is another example of someone's ignorance poisoning people's opinions.

The keys actually feel great. They're probably the best-feeling keys Apple's put out since the old ADB keyboards, and they're a welcome change when compared to the mushy keyboards Apple pumps out today.

And yes, I do remember those keys, and no, they're nothing like them. Now repeat after me: "everything I know is wrong."
Apple's standalone keyboards should be updated to be like the MacBook-and in black. Maybe make a Windows compatible for the wireless version.

Acutally SolidWorks is 3D CAD and is designed to use Open GL in high end graphics accelerators.

http://www.solidworks.com/pages/services/SystemRequirements.html

So having a video card capable of high 3D performance would really help in this case.
3D modeling benefits from OpenGL when interacting with finished models, but the actual drafting work generally occurs without much GPU load. Specialized high end packages and workstation cards are often designed to work together, but the key word there is "workstation" and not desktop PC.

Solidworks was never meant to run on a $1200 notebook any more than it would on any low- to mid-range system. It does run, and adequately, but please, let's all remember that Solidworks is a $5000+ bit of software and the biggest impact is going to be spending more on the hardware, not quibbling over GMA950.

Good News...

macbook way better than mini in specs...

Just check out this benchmark program results that I just did!

For some reason I can't post a thread this should be it's own thread...

The keyboard reminds me of the old ZX Spectrum
Hmm. Really?

Maybe he was thinking of the Sinclair QL... At least, it came to mind for me when I first saw the new keyboard. I just hope it's a lot better. :D

Great year for Apple. First Intel iMac, MacBook Pro and Intel Mac Mini, then MacBook. What's next - MacPro?

It is great all these computers have great speed.
Hope the eMac will be one of the last PowerPC Macs left (CRT, education only means it is still selling) and that the MacBook or Mac mini are worthy Intel options for schools.

Also note that Black Keys Will Be More Visible In Low Light due to WHITE characters on black. White model black characters will not be visible at all in low light. Tricky since this model will never have backlights. An additional reason for wanting a BLACK one.
Or...just learn to touch-type. :)

Integrated graphics suck...

But other than that, MacBook is awesome! I love the looks :D and a dual core porcessor

Great update, or should I say replacement for the iBook line. Overall I'm pleased with everything and I don't mind the integrated graphics all that much. I was hoping for a less expensive model however. My iBook G3 just bit the dust and I was looking to replace it with something inexpensive. I already have an iMac Core Duo and I don't need that power, just something I can lug around and browse the internet, etc.
Main reason I can't justify the purchase as well. Have a new 20" Intel iMac sitting at home and a fully functional 12" iBook that I just upgraded(1.33Ghz, 1.5GB, 100GB). I'd LOVE to have an excuse to buy the new MacBook...I just can't think of one. :)

Whoops!!
My finger might just have slipped onto the order button
And then again into my wallet
And then just happened to type in my credit card number

So glad my Big bulky Dell SmartPC packed in a month ago!!!!!

My first mac is on its way.......
Been watching all the rumors ever since I got back to uni, glad its finally out

Why can't MBP come out in blacK??Man these MB is the coolest mac ever as far as design goes!

If it wasn't for the graphic card I would be all over it...

I just saw the black MacBook today... Personally... i don't like it!! Man it looks like a toy!! i think my little niece has a "My First Laptop" that looks better than that. i was expecting some kind of glossy cover or some more glosswork on the outside or something. THe whole thing looks like it's made out of a rubbermaid waste container. The whole thing is matte except the glossy screen. My final words.... the sony, or new HP and new dells are really looking A LOT better than the black macbook. IM BITTER!

... but the white ones are nice... :p

integrated graphics

integrated graphics, Apple should have stuck with seperate GPU, whats the one thing that a student with a new macbook would like to do?

Load on bootcamp, so he can put windows on his mac, and when he is not doing his work boot into windows and play 1 of the 100,000 games available, with integrated graphics, he cant do that, apple you missed a major opportunity there, its a big selling point.

My other question is how will the integrated graphics work with programs like Final Cut Studio?

Extra for Black is crazy, they dont charge extra for black nano's, you would think that apple would learn there lesson by now, we are having to shell out for new binary programmes, we dont wanna shell out for colour of the new machine as well.

At this rate i will buy a dell dual core and try and load mac osx on it, at least then i can have a GPU and not have to pay for black.

You who have one -- could you elaborate on the "sharp edges chafe wrists when typing" issue some people have reported? Big deal or not?

Also, still hoping for some informal WoW test reports. :)

I cannot believe these people who say the MacBook isn't a good machine.. they are on acid with unrealistic expectations, forgetting the:

54k rpm drive
very fast processor
iSight, Front Row et al
small design, light
The majority of features that are found on the MBP...
Excellent battery life

The only downer is the dedicated graphics card - but the MB isn't a gaming machine, Apple isn't targeting the MB for you ( being a gamer ) , in that case.

Overall, this machine exceeded my expectations - they could have gone with a Solo - but no, excellent value.

Same sort of edges as the old iBook I think - I only noticed the edges when I was in bed, sitting upwards and had it at an odd angle. I'd hardly say it was chafing my wrists though!

This is supposed to be a replacement for the 12" PB. Personally I don't think it is, but the GeForce Go 5200 in the 12" PB gets its arse kicked by the GMA950. That GFX chip in the 12" PB is seriously ****e.

But the GMA950 sadly has even slower 3D performance than the FX5200, although both are have atrocious PS/VS2.0 performance (utilised by Core Image on the Mac and a lot of modern Games). Thankfully, Apple have got Intel to write some very good drivers for it so it's not noticable when just using the OS.

some cheese with that whine?

go ahead and by that crappy dell...if all you want to do is play games, get the dell! good luck getting os x to work well on it, too...

and no, you're not forced to shell out more for the color of the MB...you can choose to pay more and get the black or you can choose to pay less and get the white. no one's forcing you to do anything.

there's this thing called a mac book pro that has discrete graphics and will probably play your 100,000 games. apple has a number of choices for you...choose the one that will fit your use. or get your dell and stop trolling around here.

Unfortunately, the old iBook was a much better gaming machine despite having none of the benefits you listed. The GPU means a LOT in a modern computer and while I can afford a MacBook Pro (in fact, I've had it for a month now), not everybody who would've bought an iBook and is now being screwwed over the GPU can afford that.

I appreciate the efforts of those who are valiantly defending Apple, but this is a very bad marketing decision because while you're quite right that a lot of people won't care about the lack of a GPU and the rest of the spec is very good, previously, Apple DID put proper GPUs machines at this price point, and that will certainly have been responsible to some degree for the iBook's success. With the GMA950 it's not like you can just 'turn down the settings' and live with it (which would be fine as far as I'm concerned) - a lot of games either won't run at all or will run unacceptably under any circumstances - take Black and White 2 for an example. I expect that at least 60-70% of people who buy computers will want to play games on them at some point, even if it's just an occasional thing.

Don't yopu think that saying that people are being 'screwed over the GPU' is putting things a little strongly?

Personally I'd rather not have integrated graphics but considering the huge spec of this cheap machine I don't think it's that much of a problem.
