I'm a little lost sorry, but given I use Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Corel Painter, PS would a Macbook be ok? I know these haven't been ported to Intel yet but in the case they are (and for now using Rosetta) is this new Macbook ok for that do you think?

Yes it would be the same as using a 2.0ghz MacBook Pro. Despite what people say none of those would be affected by integrated graphics, the only thing is the Rosetta speed hit, which as long as you've got lots of memory (least a gig) should be alright in the MacBook.

Ignore what people are saying, this is one fast Mac computer.

First Post. First Mac.

I've been wanting to get a Mac for a few weeks now. At first I wanted the Mini, then I figured I needed a laptop, so I've been waiting for the MacBook to come out and now I finally have one! $1099 w/ $40 student discount + 99.95 for an HPPSC1510MFP Printer (free after $100 rebate) = $1,254.77 after tax.

So, I have no idea how to use this thing, but as a film student I guess I'm going to have to learn. As a PC guy all of my life I can't figure out how to make my browser window full size on my screen? Unlike windows, there aren't any little buttons on the top right hand side to maximize or minimize. :p I'll learn.

Sweet, congrats :)

Uh oh... In windows, there is big or small. The computer doesn't think. Top left of safari window in a mac:
Red X -> Close window
Yellow - -> Minimise window
Green + -> Resizes the window to be as large as required WITHOUT stretching the width. This doesn't waste screen space like in windows
You can, however, change the window to a custom size by clicking and dragging the bottom-right corner.

Don't know if someone has mentioned this already, but they all ship with 2x256MB RAM :( So if you want to upgrade RAM yourself without paying Apple's prices then you have to take out 256 to put in any more.
Not very happy about that!!

Its crap like that and the lack of a dedicated GPU that makes me say, buy a intel motherboard with GMA950 and a PCIexpress slot, buy a CPU and DDR and install the hacked OS and save a bundle - they (you know who they are) are almost done developing Nvidia and ATI drivers, poop, you can even order do it yourself laptops with certain parts....order one with GMA motherboard, then when GPU drivers mature, swap it out.

This makes me mad. $1000+ more for a GPU, ($30.00) back lit keyboard ($4.00), FW800 (texas instruments no doubt, $.80 cents) and aluminum case $40.00, yeah, that's a good deal. Not.

No graphics card + glossy screen = no purchase.

I'd pay 250 more for black, gfx, 20GB, no glossy screen.

Great spec machine otherwise, just not what I need.

"If Final Cut Pro doesn't support integrated graphics, then how come I've been using it all evening on my spanky new MacBook?"

Which version do you use? The latest ub version? Does it work well? Would be the only pro app I'd use on the MacBook.

Thanks

Do tell us what you need a dedicated graphics card for? Or let me guess, WoW?

That just means it has DRAM timings of 5-5-5-12.. pretty normal for PC2-5300 at this stage in the game.. though 5-5-5-10 would be nice... ram isn't all about clock speed you know...
2-2-2--10 would be even better! :D

I totally agree, why bother black if you're buying a Mac, so werid.

You folks are so young. Up till the pismo the Apple laptops were always black... it was traditional and intrenched and everyone who had memories of old black (think powerbook 5600 & 1400 --> pismo) or grey (Moto 68030 based powerbooks like the PowerBook 160 & 180) laptops was shocked when the white stuff came out... for some older folks black *was* the cool mac laptop color... unless you are really old and had a Macintosh portable... they were white hehe..

I prefer black ... (typing this on my still sexy bat-man like Pismo) ... but for $150 i might learn to deal with the girly make-up case white one. hehe ... actually ... i am coming around on the wite one... $150 is nothing to shrug about ...

(the 1400 had the BEST keyboard ever.... IBM made that puppy... a tank...)

Using the latest 5.1 UB version it works fantastic. I do a lot of video editing for my masters degree so I dropped in one of my existing project files - ran, edited, complied extremely quickly. I can see why they're not advertising it as running Pro Apps well (since they want to sell some MacBook Pros too!) but it does - and does them all bloody well.

They also swore blind that it would be called an iBook. Don't believe a word they say. Sorry.

not to mention they also said the ibook replacement would come out "well before the end of april" and that it would indeed be called macbook thin, and even today after the "macbook" clearly was released, they said, well apple will NOW have IBOOK/MACBOOK THIN/MACBOOK GAMER, in ADDITION to the Macbook that they said was never going to exist....hahhaha what B.S.

im still waiting to hear more feedback regarding the black MB and the fingerprints and smudges everywhere

Regarding dirtyness, is there anything I can buy that covers the the part where your palms go so that it won't potentially get dirty? Maybe like a clear screen protector or something. I'm a pretty clean guy, but I've seen some ibooks that have nice black ring around the palm rest area.

Well it's true - -I can't remember the site, but there is a PC spec site (ASUS, etc) that tells all the costs of parts in 1000 quantities....

I think Apple (and they will ) will bring the Macbook down in price.....

The MacBook will get a boost with X300/600, then remain same price with 800 FW, the newer MBP will have memron and 4 CPU's. This will be the difference, for now, we are guinea pigs.

The 512 is bogus, throw it out, buy from pricewatch.com and get 2 1GB sticks, remember, this is a INTEL chip so it runs memory in dual channel so you can just at sticks that are different.

However, how easy is it to swap out the HD? Unless they have their own design, I would order the low end and swap out to a 7200 RPM, add 2x1 GB sticks and stay with white. Then get a external DVD burner.

It should probably run final cut universal fine, not sure about swift 3d or motion though.

Someone needs to come up with USB GPU devices, that way we can use whatever we want. Still I see a lot of people buying intel motherboards with ONBOARD GMA and PCIexpress waiting for drivers to develop, with laptops, they are buying ATI and NVIDIA in hopes that the OS groups develops good drivers (you have to edit the kext files).

Personally, for fun, I have OS X 10.4.5 on a AMD 64, SSE2 in 1200x1024, no dual display yet - -might pick up a white MacBook in a few weeks, need to read more reviews. Gotta play UNREAL and run final cut, pro-tools, motion though....maybe use the hack version for that and macbook for the web design and so on.

Only a matter of time before OS is released to us! Vista looks like a skin and is horrible IMHO. Plus delayed another year. C'mon steve get with it.

Still waiting for decent photos of the white Macbook. Please ^_____^

i like the white one alot, it will age better than the black one, scratches and fingerprints are eye sores. while the black DOES look cooler, i would hate having grimey paw prints all over it. i should have taken my digicam in the store when i went in this morning
