am I missing something, or is there nothing drastic that seperates the macbook from the macbook pro?

Well, the main differences are the integrated graphics and the lack of a ExpressCard/34 slot in the MacBook.

Otherwise, the MacBook price points look great. These things are gonna be hot sellers.

I used to like the thinkpads but have heard stories of the new lenovo ones being a bit rubbish. How true that is I dunno.
Well I know for a fact the new T60 and X60 are very close to if not equal to the old IBM machines. As for the Z series, I haven't had the chance to actually use them, but I've heard good things.

Great update, or should I say replacement for the iBook line. Overall I'm pleased with everything and I don't mind the integrated graphics all that much. I was hoping for a less expensive model however. My iBook G3 just bit the dust and I was looking to replace it with something inexpensive. I already have an iMac Core Duo and I don't need that power, just something I can lug around and browse the internet, etc.

Maybe I'll wait a while and pick up a refurb model for under $899.
If they're made my Asus, don't expect many of them.

integrated mic!?

The MPBs have an integrated mic for use in iChat.

Didn't find it in the MB's specs... Is it missing?

Just a typo, but that shouldn't stop anyone from speculating wildly as to what it could mean:

Bluetooth iPod with stereo BT headphones just around the corner then.

I'll have to see how the glossy screen is before I can make up my opinion ... but I've seen enough people with Sony Vaios getting massive glare in lecture halls to be suspicious.

Audio in and clamshell mode are definitely nice touches, though.

That's good to hear. Especially when Apple ships MacOSX for every PC :)

I like glossy screens... but I think Apple are going to cause another batch of unhappy punters by shipping with 512 MB.

But please remember people, 512 MB IS NOT ENOUGH.

Please don't let have loads of purchasers of 512 MB machines complaining that their machines are slow due to lack of ram... Learn from the mistakes of we arly adopters of the imac and macbook pro.

512 are the minimum for the basic configuration. But I think that's good enough for many many users. Therefore I'm glad Apple chose to leave it that way instead of making me pay for extra RAM I might not need... and at the Apple price.

I think it is much better to leave it at 512 MB and let the people buy the RAM whenever and wherever they want. Kudos to Apple for getting away with the soldered RAM thing, now I can stick two 1GB RAM DIMM's in here. :)

I was under the impression that the iBooks came with 512 RAM soldered in.

Am I mistaken?

the MacBooks come with two 256 DIMMs.

Can anyone comment on this?
Sure. I can.

Just like you get better contrast on glossy paper, you also get a better picture on a glossy screen. The downside of that is of course reflections. Its a win-lose feature.

Which is exactly why this should be optional. I know at least two people for whom this will be a deal breaker.
I hope Apple at least continues to offer choice for the MacBooks because if not this might be my last Apple portable.

Features found in MBP not found in the MacBook:

- Expresscard
- Backlit keyboard
- Dedicated video-card
- All-aluminium construction
- Bigger screens with higher resolution

I Agree With ImAlwaysRight - New MacBook Is An Enhanced 12" PB Replacement

You've got to be kidding me. I wanted dedicated graphics, too, but integrated means longer battery life and less heat. Plus the X1600 in the MBP is down clocked anyway, I imagine just because of the heat. Put 2GB memory in the MacBook and integrated graphics really isn't that big of a deal, especially when you can get a 2.0GHz processor instead of a 1.66 that most folks thought.

Look at all the other features this retained of the PB line - screen spanning, DVI out, operate with book closed, digital audio capabilities -- IMHO this is a great step up from the iBook AND much better than the previous 1.5GHz PowerBook 12".

Case may be important to some. But have you ever used an iBook? I have, and actually thought it to be quite a nice little machine, white color and all. I'm pretty stoked over these new MacBooks.

OK, time to get some work done until I leave to go buy my new MacBook!!! :)
I Agree With You Completely ImAlwaysRight - New MacBook Is An Enhanced 12" PB Replacement. I love it although I wish it were Merom inside. But then you knew that. :p

Why oh why did I get that MBP two months ago. I need a stupid hat please.
Ain't that the truth! :) I imagine a lot of 15" MBP owners are asking themselves the same question this morning. Boy that new 24-hour a day store in Manhatten is gonna be swamped this weekend. What a hit this will be.

I hope the family is not really complete. No 13" mac book pro? I know some people who will be very disappointed. The graphics capabilities of the macbook are just a little weak for many professionals...

"Professional" is the key word. It's called a MacBook (sans "pro"). I think this is Apple keeping to the old "grid." Simply put, the MacBook isn't aimed at pros. Scan through the MacBook pages on Apples site and you'll see and read things like watching DVDs in bed, sharing hotel internet with friends, family trips, etc.

If one wants to use the MacBook for a professional solution, go for it. But that's not why Apple made it.

Nah.....Apple has done this in the past with the iMac's....people will pay don't worry :p

who want's to bet, next they will release black and white iMac's with optional screen. Those options would be nice.
