I was under the impression that the iBooks came with 512 RAM soldered in.

Am I mistaken?

the MacBooks come with two 256 DIMMs.

Can anyone comment on this?

This is because the memory should be installed in matching pairs to take advantage of the added bandwidth dual-channel access provides, especially for integrated graphics machines.

This isn't to say there's any dramatic difference when you don't install matching pairs, of course. Barefeats showed only one test where the results were notably different (Quake 3), but the results were dramatically different in that test. http://barefeats.com/mincd.html

Why didnt they just put 1x 512mb and not 2x 256mb for the RAM in the base model, this is really annoying....

anyone know if Aperture can run on MacBook?

Apple.com

Minimum System Requirements
One of the following Macintosh computers:
Power Mac G5 with a 1.8-gigahertz (GHz) or faster PowerPC G5 processor
iMac with 1.8GHz or faster PowerPC G5 or Intel Core Duo processor
MacBook Pro
15- or 17-inch PowerBook G4 with a 1.25GHz or faster PowerPC G4 processor
Mac OS X version 10.4.6 “Tiger” (or later)
1GB of RAM
Display with 1280-by-854 (or higher) resolution
One of the following graphics cards:
ATI Radeon X600 Pro or X600 XT
ATI Radeon X800 XT Mac Edition
ATI Radeon X850 XT
ATI Radeon X1600
ATI Radeon 9800 XT or 9800 Pro
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
ATI Radeon 9600, 9600 XT, 9600 Pro, or 9650
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 or 9600
ATI Mobility X1600
NVIDIA GeForce 6600 LE or 6600
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL or 6800 GT DDL
NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT
NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500
5GB of disk space for application, sample projects, and tutorial
DVD drive for installation

So no, don't think so with that GPU ;)

I'll wait for some reviews, but this is probably my next computer... I'd like to see some reveiws on HD video playback (I expect it should be flawless... but, hey never hurts to be sure), and on minimal 3D gaming... not expecting Doom 3, but I'd like to see how it shores up against the 9200/32mb in my mini (I suppose I could find some benchmarks for the new Intel minis and it'd be the same).

My only gripe is the forced CPU upgrade to get a SD. WTF. I don't NEED dual 2ghz cores. I don't even need dual 1.8ghz cores. A 1.6ghz Core Duo would have been fine with me, but I do need a SuperDrive. Lame.

Anyways, I'll hold out for a refurb, most likely, unless I get a great offer on my mini setup. :)

Don't know if someone has mentioned this already, but they all ship with 2x256MB RAM :( So if you want to upgrade RAM yourself without paying Apple's prices then you have to take out 256 to put in any more.
Not very happy about that!!

I know...they properly get a cheap deal with the old 256MB sticks or something.

- Bigger screens with higher resolution

-Matte (non-glossy) screen
-Built in mic

I think people will change their minds when they see glossy screens in the flesh. Sonys X-Black screen rock.

I've never been able to use a matte screen laptop out in the sun, never!

Remember folks, despite Apple upgrading a lot of the specs to make the Macbook much more of a mid-way notebook that could adequately replace the 12" Powerbook, it is still placed as the entry level laptop. If you want to game and you want a Mac, then you really should be going for a MacBook Pro. Those won't have integrated graphics anytime soon.
As a 12" PB owner I can say the issue is not just the specs but the size and weight. As a replacement for the iBook this is awesome, but I really want a small, light laptop to replace the 12" PB. As a road warrior I don't consider 1lb more weight to carry around as an "upgrade" or "replacement"

What a really want is a ultraportable Mac, ~3lb, no optical drive and 11-12" screen. I'm willing to pay a premium for this as well. Please Apple!

From Apples Hot News - "up to five times faster than the iBook and up to four times faster than the 12-inch PowerBook. Together with the 15-and 17-inch MacBook Pros, the new MacBook completes Apple’s Intel-based portables lineup and replaces both the iBook and the 12-inch PowerBook. [May 16, 2006]"

It doesnt look as though there are plans to insert any other replacement for the 12 in powerbook, these three are filling the gap on their own I guess.

But that doesnt rule out an even lower entry level subnotebook, so...let me be the first to say,

"MacBook Nano's next tuesday!"

that is my thing, it only has an 80GB HDD as extra on it from what i can tell.

Why isn 't the black iPods more if the black macbook is more

I think the question you should be asking is:

"Why does the black MacBook cost more when the black iPod doesn't?" They shouldn't put a premium on a color.

Personally, if they were going to make one model cost more, I would have preferred they wrapped it in aluminum as a real 12" PB replacement.

Same as the Sony FE series it appears. I guess those ex-Sony designers are showing their worth.

I'm no techie, but I thought RAM worked better when blocks are used in pairs (so a pair of 256Mb blocks will work better then a single block of 512Mb).

Why? I have no idea. Would any tech like to enlighten us? :)

I get the feeling they don't want the black version to become the new standard. I guess that is what Steve figures would happen so he's trying to curb the appetite a bit. Luckily I like the white one better anyway ...but then again I'm not currently looking for a laptop.

That's likely because Apple wanted to ship in dual channel config.

The old apple screens (on my powerbook) were too dim when outside anyway.

I've just nipped across the office to check out an xbrite equipped sony and the display is impressive once you get used to the reflection.

What's the dimple/hole to the left of the IR port then? I assumed it was the Mic.

Nicely done, Apple! :) A very nice assortment of lappies, indeed. I think that it's great that they've given us so many options now. I like the classic Apple White just as I always have, so the black one won't cause any temptation. :p Well played, Steve-O! :D

I'm pretty sure it has to be the Mic. I really don't think they would have iSight built-in and skip the Mic.

I Agree With You Completely ImAlwaysRight - New MacBook Is An Enhanced 12" PB Replacement. I love it although I wish it were Merom inside. But then you knew that. :p
Well, if we have socketed processors, then you CAN have Merom inside. ;) I doubt a socket in a 1" think MB, but with 5.5LB weight, just maybe!!!! I should know later this afternoon and will post picts.

Wait, can you use a glossy screen outside?
