dude. I DID NOT KNOW THAT HP MADE GOOD-LOOKING LAPTOPS.

i just checked out the dv5. it is one sweet looking mofo.

when did this happen!?!?!?!

Hypothetically if the MBs were to come out tomorrow, what time would it be? What time does the Apple store update?

damn... from what i've been reading... windows 7 was sounding like a revolution. Like something real MS was making to actually counter the rise of OS X.

http://www.fashionfunky.com/2008/09/microsoft_gives_up_on_vista_wi.php:

"Inside sources confirm that internal builds have already been made available to partners for hardware and software certification. Windows 7 is not a whole new OS but an evolution of Vista, and will reuse the old kernel and device driver model. That means it would use the kernel in its newer state, when Microsoft updated it with Vista's first service pack. It also means existing device drivers for Vista will work on Windows 7."

I figured windows 7 would have to be good because MS finally has some competition.

You could have said the same thing about Vista.

Windows 7 is supposed to have some performance enhancements, and will likely include a more developed hypervisor and other stuff like that. But they would never dump all that Vista development and force driver developers to once again switch to a whole new OS platform. If they tried to do that it would be the end of Microsoft.

MS Office doesn't match iLife, it matches iWork, which is not included in a MacBook Pro. Vista Ultimate is basically Business + Home Premium, which, unless you own a business, is worthless.

Don't forget that MBP have a decent no humming sound card, most laptops produce a hum if you record with the mic input.

I'm sorry, but going to the Apple store and playing with friends computers is just not a representative of real-world experience. Its nice and all, but its just not the same.

While I realize i dont have the 24/7 useage that people here have, I'd like to think I have MUCH more experience with Mac's than your average "ooh lets see what toys the ipod store has" consumer.

As I stated before, i do have at least a few hundred hours of useage. Not anything compared to those that actually own one, but please dont shrug me off as a regular consumer.

OK, so here's my two cents, most of which is simply agreement with what others have said so far.
The more I read this theory the more I agree with it.

Maybe then we'll see a true pro notebook in the high-end. With quad-core and a upper-mid-range GPU. Maybe that notebook will have 1920·1200 while the MacBooks will have 16:9 1280·720 (so that's where the price drop is coming from! :D), 1366·768 and/or 1600·900, and 1920·1080.

Also, with both the Macbook and the Macbook Pro expecting to make the shift to aluminum, could it be possible that they are simply referring to the same line?
Possibly, and it's even more likely than before.

There's nothing pro about the Macbook Pros. They are worse than most anything out there in their category, and yet cost more than anything out there. Just look at the graphics card. The processor and RAM are similar to most anything else. The HDD capacity is less, standard.
But, but… it's just one inch thin!! And it looks sooo good!! And, and… … it's only 5.4/6.8 pounds!

October 14 could be for something else, September 23 could be for the MacBooks:
http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/15/new-macbooks-already-shipping-hitting-stores-september-23rd/
Actually, the link clearly states that September 23 is for MacBook Pros.

Except the Mac Pro you meant?
Actually even the Mac Pro is on the low side of DP workstations (the HP xw8600 goes to 128 GB RAM, 4x as much as the Mac Pro).

EDIT: Seriously, a 3.16GHz Intel processor? Nvidia GeForce 9800M GT? Do you even know what you're talking about?
The MacBook Pro is a toy compared to that, however you slice it.

Heh, I was after a MacBook too. Was looking at the MBP's but since I'll be getting a new maxed out 24" iMac anyways... Thought there was little point in spending so much just for a metal case and an LED display.

Hope this is true.

I think Apple definitely needs to lower MBs and MBPs prices. All other laptops from other vendors are lot cheaper than they used to be and new ones come out cheaper than it was before. Apple uses same Intel chips and same video cards that can be found in other laptops and comparisons are inevitable. I know OSX is great os to work on, but it is definitely not worth $500+ premium, and vista is not $500 worse than OSX.

Hopefully it looks something like this !!

(especially the white keys in a combination with the aluminium casing)

Actualy, it's a $400+ premium for Macbooks, and a $1000+ premium for MBP's.

Totally. Anybody that goes to a site called MacRumors and posts--it should be taken for granted that they know their **** about their technology, whether they are lying fanboys or otherwise.

who wants to know about mac rumors? nerdy, geeky fanboys, or technology freaks, both of whom have opened up their devices and messed with them.

Excuse me, but pocket protectors are a sensible yet stylish accessory. And I can't help wearing glasses. And there's nothing wrong with button-down collars.

 Trolls are so boring.

Apple does not NEED to lower the prices. They clearly have statisticians working on setting the prices so they maximize the profit of selling these products. And they clearly have a limited number that they can manufacture in order to sell.

Apple will probably not need to lower the prices drastically until they have a competitor. Until, that is, another PC manufacturer creates a machine with OS X on it and can manufacture it at the same rate as Apple.

Actually, if you really need/want the 13-inch screen size, the MacBook isn't THAT bad. Only Dell and Sony make 13-inchs (that I know of), both of comparable pricing.

I sure hope not.

The Macbook is already too thin and too hot. We don't want it even thinner and hotter! For the average consumer, what does thin accomplish? The MBA has a definite market. The Macbook's market is totally different. And would Apple really sell a MBA for $999? We're talking about Apple, you know. Infamous for charging as much as they can get away with.

Do you think when Apple is putting a computer on the drawing board, they think "about the under the hood specs" first, and fit those specs into the case or do you think they start with the case (aesthetics) and then fit the "under the hood specs" into the case.

I think its the latter.

Why can any company in their right mind do that, sell a okay computer for a not okay price and expect success? Well, they are apple, they could brand something called iS**t and I bet it would sell very well.

Apple is in the business of making money first and for most, and they do that primarily by being a fashion statement (just as PC's are vastly successful because they are cheap and cheerful), their style and the brand image. They think about the hardware specs second I think.

And no one protests at all because steve is very good at speaking about their sub par stuff. Makes it sound magically and revolutionary. Even though it is just sub par stuff, repackaged in a very refined case with a apple on it.

Thats why this update, as ALL (except for the Intel jump, that made me feel like Apple had a new game in mind) previous updates (especially the "major" ones) will be a let down. We can expect the same MacBook as now in a different case with a few gigs extra of Hard drive space, a LED screen, some stuff moved around on the inside, a speed bump and a "competitive price drop of 150$ on all models".

Thats about it... I dont see a okay gpu or even more than one extra port of some kind.

One day, I'll switch back... so long as apple aims for sling and beautiful...

Just my two cents.

I had observed the same thing!

Before the last Portable overhaul in Feb-08 people were expecting updates for MBP but the only rumors circulating on the net were about MB..... And we all know what happened.... We saw both MB an MBP overhauled in the same go.

If not tomorrow morning, my bet is we will see all three portables overhauled mid-October.

MB-Touch (aka tablet) would be the centre of attraction for the Macworld- coming January.... or else MacWorld will be too boring cause only new thing then would be Snow Leopard.... Which would be major but not as exciting for consumers and media as a entirely new Product.

If I had to guess, perhaps the MB is a larger seller than the pro. Just a guess though based on pricing alone.

if only MB had a GPU.
i hate that it hogs the system memory.
id buy MB Black in a split of a second.

Apple really does not have to lower prices. Apple has its own OS that if people want to use, they have to buy from Apple. Macbooks are well priced right now; a price drop would further increase sales however i am unsure about overall profit

One thing, though off topic (of sorts): I am NOT attacking you, so you shouldn't feel like I am (I just get that feeling from you – you haven't said anything). Don't worry, and when you get that Mac (I'd still advise against it and hope someone will convince you to buy a Thinkpad), hopefully you won't get a complete dud.

Im all for "function before style", but Thinkpads are downright ugly. But why not both? I'd go Sony (especially if you were considering MacBook Pros), or HP.

you are not 17 dude. i checked.

Like you "checked" prices of Macs and PCs or how you fact checked those claims about the intel processors?

LOL, most people here are "regular consumers". On the other hand, that statement reminds me of the elitist Apple-fanboys of yore (todays iPhone and iPod fanboys who thinks that the Touch and iPhone is "the most advanced handheld out there" as if they were living in a vacuum).

the thing i like about the thinkpad is that it "looks" like a business machine. It doesn't have a "cute" look that the macbook has.

same with HTC touch. it has a business look to it that is different from the cuter looking iphone.

things about the thinkpad i don't like though: diagonally-placed logo, blue enter key, and the clit in the middle of the keyboard.
