Like you "checked" prices of Macs and PCs or how you fact checked those claims about the intel processors?

LOL, most people here are "regular consumers". On the other hand, that statement reminds me of the elitist Apple-fanboys of yore (todays iPhone and iPod fanboys who thinks that the Touch and iPhone is "the most advanced handheld out there" as if they were living in a vacuum).

Actually, as most people on this forum demonstrate by actually knowing the ins and outs of the products they buy, most people here are not your "average" consumer.

Your average consumer will buy something because they like the looks/heard the brand is good. I dont consider anyone on these forums regulare consumers. Cept mayb that john guy, hes just a crazy fanboy at best.

Im all for "function before style", but Thinkpads are downright ugly. But why not both? I'd go Sony (especially if you were considering MacBook Pros), or HP.

I don't like Sony in general. I have no idea with their laptops how they are. I assume they _can_ be okay, though. I just realised (back in the day) after owning portable cassette recorders (I do radio) and Minidiscs en masse, that none of anything mechanical Sony-stuff I ever owned lasted long enough. The only thing that lasted back then and up till now was a portable radio (for headphones). When I realised that, I decided I would never own a mechanical anything from Sony.

Again, Sony could be good. Dell also makes some nice ones.

I don't think function over form is ugly, and Thinkpads are just that. All work, all rough, all purpose.

If shipments have already "begun" I think that argues for a pre-October release. Rest assured that we're very close to the new models hitting the market.

It is possible (though doubtful), but Apple could release updated MBs and MBPs on September 30. This would be 15 days after the end of the Back-to-School sale; however, there was also a rumor that OS X 10.5.6 would be necessary for the updates.

I apologize if someone asked this already but have current MBA users had problems with dents and/or wifi? I don't know about wifi but I certainly haven't heard any recurring problems with the MBA structurally (except for defects people notice straight out of the box).

Anyway my point is yes aluminum has denting issues but perhaps they've been worked out to some extent with the MBA indicating that things could be much better for the new macbook.

Just a thought

Core shutdowns spring to mind.

Not likely, as the shape itself of the MBA makes for a stronger case, all else equal. Think "eggshell" (yes, I'm serious).

i dont get why everyone on here is complaining about apple pricing. apple is a premium brand therefore you pay premium. apple makes products that are amazing and they can set the price at what ever they want and people will pay for it they have complete control over the osx market. i know i will pay up to 3k for the next revision of the macbook pro and so will a lot of people so stop complaining bout the price...

Hey, will you pay 3K for my $2500 macbook pro? I'm selling it. It is almost brand new.

I was just wondering, has there ever been a time when a new mac has been released or rumoured to be released when the whole conversation hasn't turned into a discussion about whether OSX is worth a premium? It would be refreshing if it happened some time in the future. But alas I fear it will never happen.

LOL well this is what happens when we go on for pages and pages running simply on scraps of rumors.

There's a difference between paying a price premium and paying a premium for outdated technology.

Yes they can chuck more on for aesthetics and OS X and for rights to use OS X, but the fact remains that unless they actually update the hardware too then it's all for nought.

It's not about OS X, it's about the fact that Apple are still charging large sums of money for hardware that can't even keep up with the latest Dells. If they want to keep that "macs run windows" slogan then they need to think about making it actually true. Think of it this way, the price is the same, the components get cheaper, the license for OS X stays static. If they keep the price the same, then for it to still be good value, it's got to have better hardware that satisfy the cost of the product. You're simply paying excess rather than for a software license.

I think you got that in the wrong order: People think Macs are premium products because they pay a premium.

It's the same concept people get confused by when they think that "Quality costs money" is the same as "It costs (good) money, ergo it must be quality". The latter is nonsense of course.

Engadget is reporting that they will be in stock in Stores on Sept. 23 Hope they are right!

Unfortuneatly there source is the same exact as ours, i wouldnt be suprised if it was actually a MR member who submitted the story.

Ive found this site is actually quicker than both engadget and gizmodo on these things

Thank you.

As I said earlier, Macs are at the tops of their categories in terms of price, but at the bottom of their categories in terms of specs.

You can report the post(s) for faster action. :)

actually hes been reported several times;) hence my questions.

anyway, hopefully this will be the update that apple finally kills taht useless combo drive and makes the superdrive standard.

Does anyone else find this as hilarious as I do? :D As great as Thinkpads are, associating them with an overpriced and unreliable SUV doesn't purvey a very good image in my head. I get the function over form point though.

If they dump the Pro as some posters have suggested, what about 30" ACD support? That's not a trivial difference between the regular and Pro laptops (along with FW800).

Perhaps dumping the "pro" distinction would help push the sales of new ACDs, but then again, most people purchasing a lower cost laptop would be unlikely to buy a 30". I, however, would find a 13.3" laptop with both dedicated and integrated graphics appealing in conjunction with a 30" ACD.

On paper- yes. The iMac I have is way over-priced for the CPU, RAM, HDD etc. But don't forget all the stuff that connects it- the way it's assembled etc. The design and work that goes into making Mac desktops/notebooks. (Not defending Mac pricing to the hilt here- I think Apple believe people are happy to pay a premium for their products and I believe they are right).

I never use language like this but this time I will.
The Combo Drive should just die. There is no reason for Apple to not use Super Drives in the low-end MacBook.

Id have to agree with this one. There is no excuse they can use that could possibly justify using technology that is simply laughable now.

Thank you.

I completely agree that if you just look at specs Macs are expensive. However before moving to macs I always bought high speced pcs. They always gave me headaches. Now they are no where near as bad as some people would say here. I actually don't really mind vista. But the experience of using it is no where near as pleasant as using a mac. I guess what I'm trying to say is if you asked me is OSX worth the difference in price my immediate answer would be no. If you asked is the decrease in my stress levels worth the increase in price the answer would be yes.
