Does anyone else find this as hilarious as I do? :D As great as Thinkpads are, associating them with an overpriced and unreliable SUV doesn't purvey a very good image in my head. I get the function over form point though.

Well, the function before form was the whole and only point.

I never use language like this but this time I will.
The Combo Drive should just die. There is no reason for Apple to not use Super Drives in the low-end MacBook.

There's a plenty-good reason. More money for Apple, at the cost of its customers, as people who need a SuperDrive but nothing else decide to buy the next model up. I've actually heard the combo drive costs Apple more money than a SuperDrive. It's all about Apple's profits. Just like the lack of dedicated graphics in the Macbook, to "force" people to buy the MBP.

I completely agree that if you just look at specs Macs are expensive. However before moving to macs I always bought high speced pcs. They always gave me headaches. Now they are no where near as bad as some people would say here. I actually don't really mind vista. But the experience of using it is no where near as pleasant as using a mac. I guess what I'm trying to say is if you asked me is OSX worth the difference in price my immediate answer would be no. If you asked is the decrease in my stress levels worth the increase in price the answer would be yes.

Sorry to double-post but this reply struck a chord.

The reason I switched in the first place was because I had 2-3 months of endless trouble with XP. I'd heard horror stories about Vista and was fed up with Windows in general so decided to try something new altogether- someone suggested a Mac, I did a lot of reading, went to the Apple Store a few times for a test run...

And here I am.

actually hes been reported several times;) hence my questions.
Either the moderators haven't taken action yet or have chosen not to take action.

anyway, hopefully this will be the update that apple finally kills taht useless combo drive and makes the superdrive standard.
Many believe the only reason why the Combo Drive exists is for product differentiation. So, I fear that if Apple does so the low-end MacBook (ESPECIALLY if it's $999 or less) will be given the short end of the stick somewhere else. Think back when the iMacs went aluminum. The $1199 17" model went to 20", but the GPU went down from the midrange X1600 to the low-end HD 2400. Maybe a similar thing will happen with the MacBooks.

first off, that is a wide range of ages. a 12 year old boy can father a child.
We are talking about within one or two standard deviations from the mean, not six.

thanks for the response, and yes i too enjoy the all in one experience rather than the "buy an adapter" one :p

mayb HDMI in on the pro? (or does it already have that, it sucks not knowing these things since i STILL dont have my own mac.:()

I still think Apple will go for DisplayPort, but my fear is that they will not release a model with this port until they release new ACDs (or everyone would know that new ACDs were coming).

Good marketing can do strange things, my friend.

well i could see that in years past (like....2004), but at this point it is 100% unexcuseable for a $1000 computer not being able to do the (now in 2008) simple task of burning a DVD.

As much as I love Macs this is pretty inexcusable.

Make that $1350 on the BTO combo drive model I bought 1 year ago.

Ouch!

I'm surprised by this. I haven't taken notice of the Macbooks for years, but I'm astounded that it isn't even able to burn a DVD. The only recent laptops I know that aren't capable of that is laptops that don't have ANY optical drive.

as long as people keep buying at ludicrous prices, nobody over at apple is really going to care about the mac vs. pc specs.

and mac-users are not going to simply stop buying. if there were some kind of mac-consumer union, we could stop buying for a couple months, wait for a price-drop and then get a few macbooks at reasonable prices.

My 2 Cents

If I were Steve Jobs, I wouldn't be paying silly air freight prices for shipping out Macbooks to retail outlets / regional warehousing units. What you all need to understand is, air freight costs a bomb to ship. Shipping via sea is less expensive and makes sense for two reasons, at present:

Firstly - Apple have recently announced the new iPod Nano's and iPod touch units. If Apple were to release the Macbooks tomorrow or in the next 3-5 days - they would of combined both the iPod and Macbook events... makes sense from a business point of view right?

Secondly - Apple isn't just sending a few Macbook units, they are most probably dealing in the late thousands. These units aren't just going to be sent to the US warehousing units, but they will go to all warehouse and retail stores around the world. As far as I know, they didn't release the iPods earlier in the States and then the United Kingdom. All Apple products are released on the same day (correct me if I am wrong), again it makes sense to do so.

FYI: I am a proud Dell user and have been a Windows user for the past 10 years or so. I've only ever had a problem with one machine that I previously owned - Acer. Apart from that, I can't fault Windows. I love tech, I like keeping an eye on whats going on and I thought I would share my thoughts. Some of the comments i've seen here against Windows machines blow me away.

Cheers

yes. because apple NEVER updates anything. They are using the same exact products as they were in 2001.

Apple does upgrade, albeit at a MUCH slower pace then the rest.

Probably because Apple insists on doing bi-yearly updates, unlike PC manufacturers who update their products as soon as new parts are available. Considering how fast technology is advancing, this leaves Apple technologically behind for the large part of the year, every year. Of course, this only matters for those looking for the latest & greatest, who end up waiting for the next upgrade indefinitely, taking over a year to even purchase the computer. (its what happened to me... :()

can you show me an equation or something. seriously. let's discuss this.
My statement was intended to be a figure of speech, but if you insist…

P(t < |6|) = (1/√(2π))·∫(e^(-x^2/2), -6, 6) = .99999999803

Ouch!

So I suppose even the $500 PC laptops can burn DVDs? Looks like a certain laptop has quite a bit of catching up to do…

Well that is exactly why they are always behind spec wise.

On the issue of pricing - yes Apple does seem to be over priced for the top line models....but the base macbook & base imac are reasonably priced. comparably equipped dell, hp, sony or lenovo laptops cost the same or more...macbooks can run windows but a PC cannot run OS X. Plus Apple computers have a much better build quality. By going to the Intel based model, Apple has really cornered the market.

The failure of Vista just makes things even bad for the PC market.

That is the sexiest mockup I have seen yet.

Hopefully it looks something like this !!

(especially the white keys in a combination with the aluminium casing)

Yeah I want that too!!

Read my post here and then say the MacBook's pricing is competitive with other laptops.
