Longtime lurker, firsttime poster.

The wait for new Macbooks has been INTENSELY frustrating :( I'm a PC guy waiting to get his first Mac for work/learning/everything else. A buddy of mine bought one last July and I've been oooohing and aaaahing at it ever since. In May of this year I decided to get one and since then I've been hearing rumors of an 'impending release' so I've been waiting....and waiting....and waiting.

While the wait is very frustrating, I can understand why Apple won't give out any information about new models before they can fully prepare. They simply won't be able to move the current models if they gave out any information about new ones. People would just wait for the new models and the old ones would probably have to have prices drop dramatically to get sold.

Anyway, I really hope they get released on the 14th. I don't think I can wait till MWSF. I work as an IT consultant and while my office networks are still on Windows, individual customers have been buying macs and I need to learn how to use/support these things. Having the ability to dual boot (or run VMware) to Windows on a Mac is a Godsend.....now if only I could get my hands on a new one (with Blu-Ray of course :p).

That's one of the burdens of the internet. Prior to this great technology you'd already have your product in hand, because you wouldn't know any better. The current line of MacBooks aren't going to be instantaneously outdated the moment the new ones come out. They'll just be a generation 'old'. You could buy one now unless there are things the new one COULD contain that are dealbreakers for the current generation.

I'm stuck in the same boat. I want/need a MacBook, but would ideally like a Metal one. It's just a waiting game I guess.

Yeah me too, getting tired of my Pentium4 XP desktop machine :)

Been waiting since May for the updates...
Give us 4500HD and a bigger hard drive, Apple.
And maybe some more standard RAM and a 2.6 GHz Core2.

Honestly, it's Blu-Ray that I'm waiting for. I think there's a very good chance we'll see it as an option on the new MBPs and since I don't have a player right now, that's what I'm waiting for.

I *could* just go and buy and external drive and hook it up to the laptop (at least I think that would work once the OS supports Blu-Ray), but it doesn't beat the convenience of having the drive in the computer. Going to movie night at a buddy's house? Oh, I'll just bring my nifty MBP and a blu-ray movie! We'll hook it up via HDMI and then girls will flock to us and beer will flow like water and.....er...yeah...so I want blu-ray :D

You can wait for the next update for eternity. Just make the plunge. When a new model comes out, buy it, hook them together via firewire sending the old one into Target Mode and migrate everything. Then sell the old one for a couple bucks less than you paid for it. I do this once a year and keep all my apps, docs, settings, etc... If your coming from a windows world this won't make much sense because you can't do that now but in a mac world this is the norm.

Afterwards, use the reinstall discs and rest the old machine to factory specs.

With Steve Jobs thinking physical media is dead and the power draw of Blu-Ray, I'd be VERY surprised to see it in an Apple Notebook right now. Not saying it's impossible, just improbable. Yes, I know it's in other notebook's, but one of the things Apple always prides itself on is battery life. With Blu-Ray, it wouldn't have much of that.

Since the 14th is only 3 weeks away, that's my breaking point. If nothing gets announced then, I'll just buy the current model and sell it if the new models have something I really want/need. Yeah, I'll lose a bit of cash, but it's a price I'm willing to pay.

As for blu-ray....could be on the new models....could be left out entirely. If the new models have an HDMI port, it's still a bit of a win for me as that would make it easy to hook up to a TV. Does anyone know if HDMI ports on a laptop carry audio as well? or is it just video?

Well yea, I'd agree. You've been waiting for how long? Don't jump the gun this close. You'd be surprised how little you loose.

EDIT: Just went through the last 3 years... Appears I've gone through 7 macs... So the wife is right... Anyways the most I ever lost was $122 on the first swap going from a used PB G4 1.67 to a Macbook 1.83. I made $338 on a MacBook Pro but I included 2gb ram and a bag.

D'oh! Why didn't I think of that?? If I buy a model and then upgrade the RAM and HDD myself, I'd save some $ and then probably be able to recoup my costs when I sell it off. Thanks for the tip!

I'm almost definitely going to suck it up and buy something mid-October now. I can't wait till the end of Jan. Especially since I'll be busy with wedding details then (not mine...close friend). So that means end of Feb at the earliest if I don't buy now.

K. I feel better now that I have a plan of action :D

That sounds like it could work for me...end of October/maybe November is my cut-off point. I was thinking of upgrading the RAM myself anyway. One problem: I can't afford 2 MacBooks! I'd have to sell the first before buying the second. Hmmm

Mindflux: That's very true! If it weren't for the flipping Internet I'd be living happily with my white MacBook right now...:D I'd be gutted I hadn't waited when the new one finally appeared though...

Well, its 9:00 a.m. in Cupertino and no signs of an Apple Store sticky note...

I think its safe to say Jobs is making us all wait at least one more week.:(

Im not sure if anyone else has thought this up yet.

I'm hoping for a sept 30 event. Why you ask? Well for starters i do beleive that Apple will want to flaunt their new laptops in time for the xmas season, and releasing them at the end of september gives a good month for reviews and the knowledge of new products to seep into the average consumers mind. But the main reason i beleive it will be (or hope) is this would also give steve a place to follow through with his statement he made earlier: PUSH will be coming for the iphone by september. This would be apple's last chance to make that commitment come true and also provide talking points at a potential keynote. Also the new news of apple selling its 5 millionth 3G would give Steve even more to talk about. The only thing keeping this from being a solid suggestion is the lack of invitations, which would have to go out AT SOME POINT today to keep with apples one week notification of events that they seem to favor. Also the 30th is a tuesday:p

I could be grabbing at straws, but thats really all we have right now.

Thoughts/opinions?

Straws. So many straws. All being clutched at madly by wonton tech junkies and needful students. Flailing in the wind the straws swirl until perhaps one manages to catch one..and promptly choke on it.

(I'm just jaded....I think it'll be the 14th. That's the most definitive date we've had passed around so far.)

Yes its many straws, but the main basis for my theory was it would fall into a neat little package for apple.

Apple employee-"hey steve, didnt we say that we were going to release push by september?"

Steve-"oh yes, yes we did, i almost forgot"

Apple Employee-"well we are running out of time man"

Steve-"how bout the 30th, itll fulfill my tuesday fetish, and yea i guess we could release those macbooks we have lying around then too, you know, save money and just do one event"

:p

No doubt we will see the new Macbooks in the next few weeks - if not days. Definetly before Christmas. Anyone who thinks we will see them in Macworld are stupid. Apple wouldn't ship the macbooks three months before Macworld, knowing that there will be better chipsets by January plus who ships out container loads with a three month arrival date?

Plus, Christmas is their prime time for sales - anyone missing out on this opportunity seriously needs to look at their business again.

Also, it doesn't need to be a Tuesday for the arrival of the new Macbook. It can be any day. It's Apple, they could change the trend. Afterall, Apple is a company full of suprises. We could see it tomorrow, or the day after.

Tomorrow sounds fine to me. :D
