Whats a few months, really?

Anyone remember that store in New Zealand that recommended its customers not purchase MBPs because new updates would be coming in "a few days"?

I called it then & there...questioned what "a few days" meant and that was a MONTH AGO! That page went up in August...and if anyone took their advice they'd be still waiting....as we head into October and could have been using their "desktop replacement" all this time.

For those that have waited since August...and even longer...will it have been worth it? Will we get the redesign or just a speed bump. I'm going to hazard a guess & say that anyone who's been waiting since early summer is going to have a baby if Apple only provides a speed bump.

I've been waiting since August. All signs (and people) seemed to point to an update coming around this time, and I didn't want to buy a macbook and then have a better version come out immediately. Personally I don't care about a redesign that much. I mean, it would be nice, but speed bump is what I expect and that would be fine..

Thinking about the title of this forum post, and if the New MB and MBP's have shipped why haven't any "Official" pictures been seen of the new stock? Would these be in a "Holding yard" somewhere? So one has to have unloaded them somewhere.

iTunes Store. Websites. Amazon. And so on... or an external optical drive.

For the very, very few times an optical is needed, it seems silly to be forced to carry it around all the time.

These MBP's have killer screens. I love traveling with my girlfriend and then watching a nice movie in the hotel.

Does that mean I'm resigned to regular MacBooks?

Maybe this will be my travel computer forever:

If we had known this, we might have decided otherwise. However, having waited this long now, jumping ship now is even costlier (at least emotionally) than it was a month ago. So therefore, the longer one waits the less likely it is that one suddenly becomes inclined to buy the 'old' model.

Apple should factor this into their stupid secrecy policy. Keep the looks private, but at least give some guidance on what is to come in terms of release-day and overall features.

the air blows out from the bottom underneath the screen. Having it that way makes it difficult to use on your lap or in bed because it will overheat

Overheat is an overused word, well nowadays it is. It's not a damage inducing scenario like it once was.

Both the Intel and PowerPC models Apple uses have a way of throttling back the cpu to reduce power and thus heat. The powerpc was BETTER at this, especially in later G4 models but Intel chips do it OK as well. If the cpu temp sensor reads over 180*F it will pull back the CPU and GPU in IGP applications to reduce heat. You'll notice apps will stutter or lag and the fan will be very noticeable. I've hit 194* in a 1.83 MacMini!

I have killed a Celeron M 440 based notebook that was sitting on my desk by overheating though... No Speedstep and had a weak fan/cooling design. Running Vista Basic, Photoshop CS2 and Quicktime. I liked that machine too. It was upgraded to a 7200rpm drive that got a wee bit warmer than the OEM unit so that didn't help. It was Acer that diagnosed it as overheated. 7200rpm's are no issue in Macbooks I have 3 MB's with 7200rpm drives in each, get the 16mb cache models though they tend to run cooler for some reason (WD or Hitachi).

Oh and if anyone has ever overheated a G3 chip, speak up and claim your prize. Those iBooks (still have a Clamshell FW my son uses) ran so cool you never had a chance of cooking the unit.

My macbook has burn marks on the bottom. I have to call Applecare but yea I used my laptop on my lap and in bed without batting an eye. The other day when I went to check for hairline cracks I saw the burns on the bottom. I know better now not to use my laptop the way I have been using but too late. :(

You should take better care of how you position your notebook when you have it on your lap or bed, as its meant to be on a desk for optimal venting. Notebook, not laptop. ;)

Yea like I said I know better now.

edit: hehe I know its habit to still call them laptops but I guess there not made for laps anymore.

So where would they put the vents at? (Seriously curious). It seems to me that is the only place to put them, unless you want vents on the top of the notebook.

Actually not really, imagine if you'd bought your computer in July and it came out in August...or in August & it came out in September...how long can a person wait before they eventually buy something? ...if you had just bought in August you'd be much happier than having sat idle this whole time....yet what if you don't buy now & it doesn't come out until January or *gasp* February (the 1 year anniversary of this model!). Holy crap, does it ever end? ...it ends when Steve Jobs says it ends....or The Woz sings.

Apple should factor this into their stupid secrecy policy. Keep the looks private, but at least give some guidance on what is to come in terms of release-day and overall features.

No freaking kidding! I agree 100%, this is the conclusion that I've come to. Apple fans are well...fanatics. Not necessarily the "switchers" but rather true Mac people who have been here since the beginning of binary code on a screen. Why is it that other companies will at least keep their customers semi-informed on release dates and specs...yet we sit here in the freaking dark typing on rumour pages?!? Its actually starting to piss me off to tell you the truth, and its ALWAYS been this way since I bought my first Mac in '96. I remember the price of those things would fluctuate like the price of oil. As loyal customers, I think we all at least DESERVE to know the release date of the product and general specs (that won't compromise their competitive edge). I mean c'mon, common sense dictates what most of the components will be....we don't need to know ANYTHING about the case, that can be a surprise....if there's new groundbreaking technology that none of their competitors knows about (hard w/ all the patent applications flying around) then keep that a secret. I'm totally ok w/ that and love a good surprise at MacWorld like the next guy. HOWEVER, if I'm going to plunk down $3,000 on a brand new machine I would like to at least make an informed decision with my money. I'd like to know when its coming out so I can make a sane decision of whether to buy now or in one month...."oh, its coming out in October? Fine I'll buy now cause its FREAKING JUNE!" ..."Is it really going to be all glossy and have ONE firewire 800 port? Fine, I'll buy now because I need matte and TWO firewire ports for my work." ...or how about "I'll wait for a month because they'll have 320 gb drives AND expandable to 8gb or RAM which I need so no problem, you can have my money then."

Is this so unreasonable?

...its still not giving anything away. This whole thing is rather childish if you ask me....oooh the KGB and their spies, we can't let the microfilm fall into their hands. Sheesh. Just give us the date & the 'basic' specs. I'd even pay for this information AND sign a NDA, it would cause me less grief. Call it iWellness.

Ok, noob question..
I live in Brazil and I dont know how the release of the new macbooks works. Lets supose that in fact, the macbooks come out in October 14th. Do you guys have any idea of how long we have to wait for the products to hit the stores?
My parents are going to the States next weekend and they're going to come back in October 15th afternoon. If the go to an Apple Store in the 15th's morning, will they be able to buy the new machines?

Thanks and sry for the english

see you

I am with you all the way, although I don't quite follow you on your first statement.

If we would know for sure that it is only released in Feb, yes than I would buy today, but since I can only judge on the rumors (starting in June) - release only ever seems to be a few weeks away. So I wait. And if I become to desperate I buy me an Eee-PC and hackintosh it.

My feeling is that this secrecy game works out only in the consumer market. I would hate to be an enterprise purchaser that needs to make a buying decision on such a 'non-existent' roadmap...

That was in repsonse to the poster who said if they jumped ship & bought now it would be harder on them emotionally since they've already waited so long. I was merely saying that might not be the case since we don't even know if its coming out this year....thus making the wait even more torturous. If they jumped ship in July & it came out in August it would have sucked....so after all this time the feeling is if you buy now you'll get burned by them coming out on Oct. 14th....except....we don't know for sure they're coming out then....it could be January. So are the 14th rumours any more valid than the rumours were ALL SUMMER LONG? ...they were all proven false...will October be false as well? ....then we can start the November watch.

wait wait wait wait wait....ugh

Call him too see if he's home :p

I do feel like we should be told the release date but when it comes to specs I say keep that a surprise. If they told us specs even if its something as simple as "it will have one usb port" that ruins the fun of I enjoy speculation.

Apple can patent up and down people will find a way to copy them. I posted an article somewhere about pc laptops coming with multi touch the current voodoo envy has it. And look at the mass amount of touch phones out.
