lol, i admit that was a little dramatic on my part, but as far as apples policies, as far back as I know (which I admit isnt THAT far) they always deal with secrecy. Why are we suddenly calling for apple to not be apple anymore?

I personally enjoy the build up of excitement that comes when we KNOW apple has plans, but dont know what they are fully.

As far as I can tell, we enjoy apple wowing us now and then, why don't we want that anymore?

We are simply impatient. (its neither good or bad, just human nature)

it hasnt been hurting us either, it just frustrates us, so much so to the point that the whiney ones among us condemn a company for the practices that gave it such a special place in our hearts in the first place.

I concur.

I couldn't give a chuff how long Apple has been practicing this secrecy thing ....it's a joke , ....how is your average fella or a business supposed to plan anything at all ??.....get over being wowed already , it's a company that sells tools ...and one needs to know that the 'tool' / investment is not going to depreciate overnight ....as it would (does) do as soon as a new version is released by Apple , the not knowing is a major headache to a lot of folk ..It's ok for a major studio to go drop XX amount of £$£ on a new machine whenever they wish ....alas the average High St business or family buying for the home do not have this is not an option ....knowing the refresh date would clearly give those folks a fair chance when making such an expensive purchase decision .

I understand a to an extent that you get a buzz when 'ol Steve gets up and says the "one more thing " line but c'mon lets leave all the oohh ahhh for the iPods , iTouch & the phones and the like eh ....

I am impatient I suppose ...I've not been knowing when I'm going to drop my £$£$ on a machine or two that will cost a large chunk of cash ...it would be nice to know then I could plan a little !!!
Life's full of surprises as it is ... a few constants would be nice , some of us don't have a massive amount of 000000 at the end of our bank numbers and cannot afford to just buy an OSX machine whenever it suits so have to watch carefully so that one does not get totally ripped because as soon as the new ones are out ...the price of the existing model drops .A lot ! leaving average people in business & home ..out of money ..and for what , so you can be "wowed" ...?? lol ...after all no one likes to see there investments depreciate... literally overnight.

Also the guy further down got what I missed ....if you need an OSX machine ....Apple is the only (legal) option

I concur.

what exactly are they supposed to be planning? If they NEED tools, they go and get them, if they WANT tools, they can shop around. If apple isnt your conclusion then so be it.

reread my post ...I must have been editing it as you posted

I cant really make out what your saying.

It kinda seems like you agreed and then disagreed then said something about price drops?

Trust me, it frusterates the HELL out of me waiting for these, but I do like that apple doesnt tell you whats coming. Its part of what makes apple, apple.

i want to buy a macbook in 1st week of november, and i really hope they rls it on 14th oct or atleats announce that it is coming out....

But there are some previews on modmyi.com i dont know if they are the real pics or not. But looks originals hehe.

If you need a laptop, buy it now. Computers last a long time nowadays, it isn't like its going to be milk that goes bad in your fridge.

Also, there haven't been any credible spy shots of new products since the nano 4G, so any shots you saw are likely fakes. I think the only remotely credible one was the rumoured metal casing shown a few months ago.

Shopping around is not an option with the legal terms for OSX only being allowed to run on Apple hardware.
I guess this sort of criticism is going to grow, if Apple is not coming to realise that they are trying to repeat the errors of MS. They think they have a solid grip on the customer and can dictate their terms.

A lot of people have made the switch from Windows to OSX which do not share the typical Apple fanboy position. These people may regret their move soon, if Apple is not to loosen up a little on their 'only we know what is good for you' attitude. This is where MS has failed, with an much more entrenched market position.

As for the "only we know whats good for you" statements I always see, that is just a huge over interpretation. Apple has never made statements like that, and it is just a talking point that people frustrated over the lack of options (yes im saying there is alot less configurability hardware wise with a mac) seem to pull it out of their ass. I've never seen anything from apple suggesting the reason they only have a few options is because they want to control you personally.

I have re edited my post to ( hopefully ) read a little clearer.
Although, Detektiv-Pinky's comment has a real good way of explaining what I was trying too.........

Nothing , I repeat , nothing to do with the options or proposed lack of

People choose OSX because of tight integration & because of how Apple put the package together .....thing is , it's the secrecy that is causing everyday users a headache ...........because how can someone justify buying a machine until the latest revision is out ??............'we' have to watch carefully as if we do not , 'we' stand to lose a significant proportion of what 'we' pay for a particular machine, ...overnight !....so a roadmap would assist those of us who do not have a million dollar budget by affording 'us' a little peace of mind over our purchase , no ?

Did I say OSX is not for me? I already have it and I actually quite like the OS. This does not say that I am now in deep devotion to Apple. I use the Google search engine. Do I like Google?

What I want, is to protect my investment (in time, labour, money) and this includes for me choice (or at least information about) hardware. What interfaces is Apple offering on their new machines, which ones will get dropped (that I might still need). Do they follow the stupid trek to 16:9. If I would know I could make my mind up now whether to wait for any new release or get my last chance to by what I need (go and speak to all these happy 12" Powerbook users).

If Apple is not able to deliver this choice themselves they should say so and make the OS open. Otherwise I feel locked in.
Want an example? How about some ultra-portable Mac? Look at the MacBook Air with its single USB Port - disaster waiting to happen...

I said it before a Mac is a tool, not some kind of fashion accessory.

If Apple said they're going to release new MacBooks on October 14th, who would buy a MacBook a week before? Or even a month before? Only those who absolutely could not wait this relatively short time, and then they'd feel bad about buying soon-to-be-updated model, so they might go for something else. Even if they wanted the old one, they'd wait for clearance. When it's only rumors about the upcoming release, relatively few of potential customers even hear about them, much less decide to wait. Of course the difference in sales wouldn't be all that big, but it'd still be there. Also if a company says they're going to release some entirely new or significantly different product within a few months, other companies usually release similar product at about same time or only slightly later (that's assuming it isn't something that has to be developed for longer than that). If they don't tell, others usually follow a few months later, which gives them more time of exclusivity.

And I've absolutely no idea what Air's single USB port has to do with Apple's secrecy. If you need a hammer, you don't buy a small screwdriver. It isn't screwdriver's fault you wanted a hammer. If Apple hadn't been secretive about it, you still wouldn't have known about ports or screen size, it'd have likely been "an ultra-portable Mac with Intel Core 2 Duo processor" or something like that.

Why does everyone always take a general statement I make as a personal issue?

yup, thats the way it goes.

Anyway.....

Im not really sure how this thread can go on. We havnt really heard any news in a while now. :(

A Question, if I May

Hi all :)

As a long-time reader (and HUGE fan of the live event coverage), and a new poster; I have one question about the supposed product updates on October 14th.

My apologies if this has been covered before; but as an owner of a Feb. 2008 MBP with major GPU issues (that Apple Cust. Relations kindly offered to replace with the new model upon its release), have any sources other than John Gruber of Daring Fireball estimated this date?

There seems to be much speculation on the date, but all of it (CNet, ZDNet, AppleInsider, and others) looks to be based on one person's estimate (along with any [unverifiable] sources he may have).

you guys heard about the notebooks leaving china around 9/12? old news?

we heard it once...

and never again

i think its one of the last rumours weve heard:(

maybe apple is just hiding the secret too good
i hope so cause if not, that means minor update now, and the big boom mwsf09:(:(:(

and that is extremely sad:(

Sorry to ruin the surprise, but try page 1 of... this thread!!!

And I quote: "Barrons reports on an analyst note from Citigroup's Richard Gardner who claims to have received confirmation that new MacBooks are shipping."

QED.
