where would be the best place to buy the new laptop? 1-800-MY-APPLE, Apple store or Amazon.com???? i know that some places sell really defective apple products and i was wondering which place i should buy from for the most satisfaction... thanks!

All three are reputable places to buy. It's much easier to get the educational discount (if you qualify) online @ Apple than it is in SOME stores *cough Short Hills NJ cough*

Personally, if I did not qualify for the edu. discount, I would buy on Amazon, because there is usually (dep. on where you live) no sales tax. I crossed the border to buy my MBP in Delaware for the same reason (they have no sales tax state-wide :D )

No matter where you buy (please don't think I'm treating you condescendingly/like a noob by saying this), get the AppleCare. It is the most worthwhile investment you can make into the machine (aside from the machine itself!) and will most likely pay off in the future. As I mentioned earlier, they offered to replace my whole machine with a brand new MBP when the new one comes out (within the next couple of weeks, God willing) because of GPU problems.

In any case, good luck!

I posted this image in an earlier post. I think Frys knows something's happening soon.

This is what the website says now.

The limit is not because of the price. Could it be that Frys' stock is running low and they're anticipating that they'll run out? If this is true, the low stock would support the belief that new MacBooks are coming soon, right?

it hasnt been hurting us either, it just frustrates us, so much so to the point that the whiney ones among us condemn a company for the practices that gave it such a special place in our hearts in the first place.

I take it that was more or less directed at me. I never said I wanted them to lift the magical veil of secrecy...a release date for an EXISTING product line would be too much to ask? I'm hardly condemning a company for wanting to make an informed decision when handing over thousands of my earned dollars to them. Is there something wrong w/ some of voicing our frustrations on a RUMOURS FORUM that you should judge & throw out insults.

absolutely not
its like if we didnt even exist
Jobs do whatever HE wants. Seriously, do you think people wanted to see only one USB port in the MBA?

I never really understood criticisms like that. Isn't the point of the Air to be more or less wireless? ...have printers etc hooked up to your wireless hub. I think that single one USB was put there as a fail-safe in case you were in a situation w/o wireless and needed to hook up a peripheral. Thats how I took it anyways.

I don't see why Frys would limit households...sounds like a marketing stunt to me. Whats the significance of only between Oct 1st & 2nd? ....or the prior one at the end of Sept? You'd think Frys would just want to unload their stock...some of those are old stock. What does Frys care if one house wants to come in and buy them all? ...could it be, that if they put it will trick people into thinking its a once in a lifetime sale and they better buy now!?!
Watch the website will limit people between Oct 3 & 7th next. I don't understand some businesses & their practices.

I got a microcenter ad today in the mail...On the front page they had an advertisement for a white MacBook. Underneath the ad was a small sentence that simply read: 'Subject to mfr. availability'. Now again, this could be a coincidence...Although at this point, i am highly doubting it. Plus, the main idea that I am stemming all of my hope for the 14th on is the fact that a key analyst for citigroup made a comment about the release of MacBooks in the coming weeks, in my opinion that is more reputable than any of these rumors that have been going around. I also noticed that Microcenter is running a $100 instant discount through October 12th on the 2.4 Ghz (1299.99) white MacBook. Hopefully these are the signs we have been looking for..?:(:apple:

I live near the brick and mortar Frys. They limit just about everything. That is just their M.O. I wouldn't put too much stock in that but I do remember seeing earlier in the post that someone found some "placeholders" for Macs in their SKUs and this sounds more promising.

good news

Good News!!!!

i work for a large electronics retailer in Australia and we have started our 10% off all computers including Apple.........and apple computers fly out the door when we do this deal because 10% off is the best price u are going to find anywhere for apple computers. This sale is done usually to clear current apple stock and make way for the new models which should be coming soon!

I really enjoyed reading your post regarding the secrecy kept about future products. I have two commentaries. One regarding generally known facts and the other is on my approach to choosing a computer and finally to why I like apple computers

Facts

It is publicly stated that apple is a business with sales, profits, research, innovation, losses, gains, employees and share holders.

My approach
I look at why and what i need the computer to do, then i shop for the hardware that will get it done in relation to my budget.

Apple

To me, apple computers is a company that have excelled in innovating products and selling them on a mass scale.

Actually not really, imagine if you'd bought your computer in July and it came out in August...or in August & it came out in September...how long can a person wait before they eventually buy something? ...if you had just bought in August you'd be much happier than having sat idle this whole time....yet what if you don't buy now & it doesn't come out until January or *gasp* February (the 1 year anniversary of this model!). Holy crap, does it ever end? ...it ends when Steve Jobs says it ends....or The Woz sings.

No freaking kidding! I agree 100%, this is the conclusion that I've come to. Apple fans are well...fanatics. Not necessarily the "switchers" but rather true Mac people who have been here since the beginning of binary code on a screen. Why is it that other companies will at least keep their customers semi-informed on release dates and specs...yet we sit here in the freaking dark typing on rumour pages?!? Its actually starting to piss me off to tell you the truth, and its ALWAYS been this way since I bought my first Mac in '96. I remember the price of those things would fluctuate like the price of oil. As loyal customers, I think we all at least DESERVE to know the release date of the product and general specs (that won't compromise their competitive edge). I mean c'mon, common sense dictates what most of the components will be....we don't need to know ANYTHING about the case, that can be a surprise....if there's new groundbreaking technology that none of their competitors knows about (hard w/ all the patent applications flying around) then keep that a secret. I'm totally ok w/ that and love a good surprise at MacWorld like the next guy. HOWEVER, if I'm going to plunk down $3,000 on a brand new machine I would like to at least make an informed decision with my money. I'd like to know when its coming out so I can make a sane decision of whether to buy now or in one month...."oh, its coming out in October? Fine I'll buy now cause its FREAKING JUNE!" ..."Is it really going to be all glossy and have ONE firewire 800 port? Fine, I'll buy now because I need matte and TWO firewire ports for my work." ...or how about "I'll wait for a month because they'll have 320 gb drives AND expandable to 8gb or RAM which I need so no problem, you can have my money then."

Is this so unreasonable?

...its still not giving anything away. This whole thing is rather childish if you ask me....oooh the KGB and their spies, we can't let the microfilm fall into their hands. Sheesh. Just give us the date & the 'basic' specs. I'd even pay for this information AND sign a NDA, it would cause me less grief. Call it iWellness.

Heh, it does sound as if they're trying to clear stock, or at least, the beginnings of trying to.

I wonder if I could get discount on a US MacBook in NY (as a student) when I'm over there? Hmm.

a second one wouldnt hurt anyone right?;)

I'm pretty much done waiting. I've already started uni and I'm going to be travelling soon so I'd like my Macbook sooner rather than later. Not as if there's anything wrong with the current Macbook anyway though.
