Just as suspected. They'll make a hybrid device that includes iOS/macOS. A very expensive device.
No it won’t run IOS. Just MacOS, it’s a Larger MacBook with a full folding screen, with multiple ports & a headphone jack.

It worked great with the touch bar.

What a stupid idea. I’m sure this will go hand-in-hand with the further destruction of macOS.
Stupid idea? You literally have no idea what the product is, does, looks like or cost….
Please apply for a job at Apple and fix Mac OS…. Dude there isn’t anything wrong with Mac OS,
You will say it’s buggy but can’t name any bugs….

Apple is king of haptics (nothing on the market remotely equivalent to their haptic trackpads), but I have serious doubts that they can pull off a haptic keyboard. Plus, even with keyboard avoiding view, this would take up a huge amount of real estate on the device when visible ...kinda defeats the purpose.

More like they aren't interested in creating anything new at sane price points. Tim Cook's entire reign has been about running social experiments to see what they can convince people to pay for things.
I can’t believe how smart macrumor chat room posters are, it’s incredible, they know everything about everything
I can learn so much

I'm sure a touchscreen keyboard could be made to work just as well as the current physical ones (if not better).

There definitely needs to be some tactile feedback... IDK that it has to feel mistakable for a real physical keyboard, but it definitely needs to convey how close you are to the edge of the key and which direction the center is in. And somehow it needs to be possible to identify two specific keys on home row (f and j for qwerty keyboards, IDK which keys are signified with bumps on other keyboard layouts.)

If they can pull it off, it'd be a huge breakthrough for all touch controls everywhere, not just the Mac. Maybe we'd finally get a decent replacement for joysticks on touchscreens, a decade after people stopped asking for it.

Edit: Honestly, maybe these are thoughts of just our generation. Younger and older generations never knew the joys of touch typing.

Touch display for a view full of beauty

Ugly and disgusting

I cannot believe Apple will release this as a MacBook with a virtual keyboard. It makes no sense. How is this better than a 14’ MacBook? I hope Apple has something else up their sleeve that will surprise us.

Bet Apple care won't be cheap for these ones. Sell 1 and deliver another 3 on warranty. No return customers.

Big no go, always was and always will be.

Long time Mac user, since MobileMe.com I don’t want to be mean, but people are commenting on something that doesn’t exist
It’s so funny, someone actually explained how the hinge will work.
Someone said it’s too expensive.
Some people are pissed because it won’t have Mac OS.
Also what up with people upset that iPad doesn’t have Mac OS,
A lot of them can’t specifically say what they need Mac OS on the iPad… some people blurt it file
Management… if Mac OS was on iPad people would use it for a day then go Mac to iPad os…. The people at Apple are very smart they know what people want.
Another thing anyone notice how a lot of people on this site, are extremely frugal.. it seems everything is way too expensive….
I mean it’s comical there are people already complaining about the new foldables price tag and
Can’t believe it’s not running Mac OS so funny
You think it’s funny. I think it’s a waste of power to not allow us to run MacOS apps at a minimum. The apps are the point. There’s no reason to not allow us to install apps we want. We bought them. I think Apple under Tim is a big bully. I can’t wait to see the company torn apart for the evil ways, bullying, theft of other developers apps, and etc.

I buy the device I should be able to do whatever I want with it. And people who think otherwise are just protecting Apple like it’s their baby. It’s a corporation that does no good to employees and acts like a monopoly in the marketplace. The only people making money are executives who get stock like Tim and the shareholders. That’s not good for society.

Apple equals capitalism at its worst.

Neither does anyone, but based on the information here, trying to cram a foldable display into any Macintosh product is – I have determined to be – stupid.

As for macOS, aside from Apple's steady uglification and increasingly-illogical design of the UI – which I do consider to be significant problems that didn't exist before, let's see: how about Apple continually altering user-configured settings without permission, incessant user-harassment for permissions and Apple ID "verification" with no option to permanently dismiss, the genuinely incredible process required to simply make any modifications to my system, notifications that don't obey settings toggles, runaway processes, inaccurate storage reporting and unwanted APFS snapshots, the entire System Settings application, disappearing UI elements, visual glitches, removal of the 'network locations' UI, online Apple-authorization for macOS installations... There are more, but I don't have them just on the top of my head. Some of those may constitute intended functionality, but I still consider them issues which I didn't have to suffer in the past. I miss paid updates when macOS was a real product.

Hmmm…. Apples iPad os is hampered by the OS; Apple’s macOS doesn’t support touch or on screen pencil input. I’ve seen windows laptops already in the market with this idea…. Seeing the price indication it proofs Apple’s ideas are a complete mess. Why not make a MacBook with detachable screen where you can use it as a tablet or even better… make the whole mac lineup with full macOS and iPad os capabilities. Oh wait… means less income for Apple. So they will stay at a dual crappy solution. In the beginning that was a good idea. But technical evolution makes it long overhauled.

I don’t think this is a foldable macbook. I think MR is confusing this with the foldable iPad that was rumored about for awhile now. That would make more sense. But 🤷‍♂️ It’s Apple, and it’s just a rumor, that is years away. So who knows?

If the foldable Macbook is released, I'll be travelling the world,
if it can be used as a second screen for a macbook with a keyboard.
I think the one with the keyboard will have to be the boss and the other the external display.
On the other hand, my ipad 13" is probably good enough and can be better used for reading.

So what am I waiting for? 🌍

It has to have touch capability, so by necessity, they will merge the two operating systems somehow. No way they are going to make a $3K device that is just a simple touch version of macOS. They will have to give it some iPad capabilities with Apple Pencil support, etc. At least they will in order for me and many others to buy it. It will probably still look like macOS, though.

I’m curious to see what the markets appetite for this really is. For me, it’s a pretty hard pass. I require a physical keyboard to be truly productive, and this will be another device Apple will use as an opportunity to sell an absurdly expensive one (see Apple Magic Keyboard).
